This is a great mower. I love mine. I have only one complaint. I bought my mower used. It has issues. I have to pull wires to get it going. To do this i had to by pass several of the safety switches. Not good. I have called EGO. They are not very cooperative in telling you were to get it fixed. So I continue to use it with all the switches hanging out. I have many people that ask about what kind of mower it is. It is so much fun to run And it does a super job as do the rest of thier products which I bought new. I just want it to be fixed right. I still love EGO and wont go back to ICE power.

I ordered the newest model, this one, two days ago. I was looking for tips on how to get started, and thanks to your video, it couldn't be simpler. Better than reading the manual. I couldn't believe I had just spent $599 (plus tax) for a mower, so I was seeking some reassurance that I hadn't made a mistake. Thanks for the great review. I'm normally a person who puts off grass mowing as long as possible, but now can't wait to put it to use. I think I am really going to love this mower. As for the money spent, well, I'm 79 years old, worked hard all my life, and I think I deserve this mower.

I purchased and use the EGO 21" push version. Let me say one thing: it's light. It's easy to maneuver and it cuts really well. I can cut my lot in one charge (my lot isn't terribly huge) which takes me about 40 minutes. The push mower came with the 5.0 amp hour battery and the quick charger only takes 30 minutes for a full charge. Not bad.

I have this mower. I’ve had it for two years now and I love it! The self propelled feature is very nice even on flat ground. You don’t have to push at all. You just walk behind this mower. Mows for about an hour then recharges within an hour, 30 minutes to an hour depending on how much the battery is depleted. I’ll never use a gas mower again!

Super helpful video!! I especially appreciate that you being 6'4" have no issue with the handle height as I'm the same height. I haven't bought the unit yet and cant find handle-height specs. Many years ago I tried a B&D electric mower and returned it very quickly due to wimpy power. Sounds like the Ego units have far more power than the B&D unit I had. I'm excited to get away from gas, even though my Honda still works very well.

Just bought one yesterday and I'm in love! I never thought I'd enjoy mowing the lawn, but this seriously makes it suck so much less and actually makes it enjoyable! The self propel feature is seriously worth the extra money. I have hills in my yard and it makes it so much easier. Also nice when you're turning around because it helps you get the mower going without having to exert yourself. Seriously, buy this god damn mower! And, if you need a weed whacker...The ego weed eater is a BOSS!! Only thing to note is the price of the batteries...Very high. The performance makes up for this imo. If you're wondering if this could handle high grass...IT CAN! My grass was around 2 feet long in certain spots! Cut it without issue just had to take my time in those spots cuz it needed to get through so much grass.

I doubt the blade spins faster on the self propelled version, I'm sure the only reason it has a bigger motor is because it's also driving the wheels. I'll likely get the push version, since my lawn is really small. But the mower looks great, to bad they don't have the snow blower/thrower model, so I could use the same battery & charger for that as well. Hopefully they will make that next.
@WorkshopAddict8 жыл бұрын

I want one. I think there oughta be a spare battery caddy area, maybe on the front of the deck. I also have to wonder. 40 volt lithiums came out, now 56. What's next? 100 volt? 200? small battery powered riders? remote controlled units? Maybe I should wait a little. I only use a push (or self propel) for trim up and ditches.
@WorkshopAddict7 жыл бұрын
traumajock There are 80 and 82 volt mowers on the market. IMHO, a spare battery tray just adds weight. Not many people need more than one battery. Most people who use these can mow thier lawn in less than 50 minutes.

Great review👍. I'm glad that you compared this model to the 20 inch version as I have that model. I bought this 21 inch lawnmower for my mom. I'm glad to hear that its more powerful. I think that the main feature of these mowers is that they are relatively quiet. I live in Florida where we cut our grass all year around. Noise pollution from gas machines is a HUGE problem around here. I wish there was some incentive for people to use electric because whenever my neighbors mow their lawns, I cannot record anything for my KZbin projects, I can't hear my TV, or even sleep because people around here always use extremely loud gas blowers, mowers, trimmers and even gas edgers, ugh! Get with the times people, it's 2017 for crying out loud! I've got almost all the EGO equipment except the chainsaw which I might be buying soon. It's so much easier to pop in a battery rather than mixing oil and gas and stinking up your house. Hopefully gas equipment will become obsolete soon. I'll never buy another gas mower again! Your right about the blade too. I get a much cleaner cut. My yard always looks better than my neighbors and she pays a professional lawn service.
@gaphoogys9 жыл бұрын
I use gas everything...but this mower is pretty sweet...I think my favorite thing is the transportation option, where it helps you move it while the blade isn't spinning...that is awesome! this would do very well for people over 60. I might have to get this for my dad on father's day or something

I bought the original 4Ah unit and was disappointed in the performance since it wouldn't cut my whole yard on one charge. So it went back, and had to buy another gas mower. Which broke down within 2 years. :( However, I do love the EGO Trimmer and Chainsaw and posted great reviews on Amazon about them. My question is: What is the run time of this unit with full self propel on the whole time, and is there an increase of run time of the unit if the self propel is not used? I've watched several reviews, but no one has covered this point. How about some insight!
@WorkshopAddict8 жыл бұрын
The reason I did not talk about it is because we got this in the middle of winter and did have not been able to test it out. Runtime should be around 60 minutes with self propel. it should go up slightly without it. Runtime will also depend on the amount of grass and if it is wet or dry when you cut. Taller grass will take up more power.
@terrytexas82578 жыл бұрын
Well once you get going, could to specifically do this comparison. Anyone can guess that run time will increase based on the current known conditions of the grass height, wetness, and specs of the battery in conjunction with features used on the mower. Thanks!

Very informative video. I've had a B&D cordless self-propel for four years -- some pros, some cons. It uses the older style battery, so it's very heavy. The lithium-ion is much lighter. You do have to be careful to avoid hitting rocks and tree stumps. I did it with the B&D, and had $100 of damage. It's still running ok, but battery is dying and I don't want to invest any more money in it. The EGO looks good. I was going to go for the Kobalt, but there's no self-propel and I'm 60 years old with a pacemaker!! So I need a little help. And my son isn't around often enough. I'm also very tall, so I'm glad you mentioned the handle height. I never hosed off my B&D; I don't think it's a good idea; I just use my garden gloves and wipe the underside of the deck. It stays pretty clean. I've gone all-electric on my weed-wacker, lawn mower, and snow blower. But I have backup batteries for all of them. The EGO only comes with one battery. I hope it lasts for a full mowing. My property is 1/3 acre, with some minor dips and peaks, and I always mulch. If it's one thing I hate, it's stopping in the middle of the session to charge the battery.

At about 55 seconds into the video you describe the non-self propelled battery as 2P and the propelled as 3P. What does the "P" mean? Ego improved their battery to be 2,5, 5, and 7.5 amp hours. I assume P is 2.5, so 2P would be 5 amp hour and the 3P would be 7.5 amp hour. Great review. Yours was the only one that mentioned the 1000W vs 750W motor which to me is major advantage of the self-propelled.
@WorkshopAddict9 жыл бұрын
Think of "P" as a set of batteries. with one P, there is the single set to draw from. With 2P, you have two sets to draw from. The load is spread more. 3P would have the load spread even more. So when a high am draw comes, it pulls it from more sets and does not drain the battery as fast. In EGOs case, the have software that will allow for more draw from larger batteries allowing more power for the tool.

There literally is no reason *NOT* to go with these, aside from lacking a snow blower - which EGO has confirmed that they will have by the end of 2016. I really appreciate it that you posted the video on the EGO mower. It seems like a fantastic product. My one son is 6" 4 1/2" and would appreciate that telescopic handle. I understand that you can turn off the self-propelled option and continue mowing up to those 80 minutes they advertise, instead of 60 if you would use it. Is this correct? My husband does not want me to purchase one. He's concerned that the battery will not work up to it's ability after sitting a season of Winter/Spring and will then wear out quicker. Any thoughts on this? Is there anyone that has had a battery operated mower for at least 3 years? Thank you, in advance, for your help.

Mr WorkshopAddict; I have a few questions. How well will this mower do on small twigs, pine cones and pine balls...and more than a few leaves?
@WorkshopAddict7 жыл бұрын
accsportsfan Mr Accsportsfan, this mower has done well with small twigs and Austrian Pine Cones. Mine are pretty large, but they are not inner solid like some I have seen. With that said, I would say that this unit will have no issue with those items. Leaves are also not an issue, but if you are multching a large amount of the unit will slow slightly and it will kick into a higher speed and torque to the blade using g up the battery a bit faster. The blade will dull faster as expected because it is a thin blade and those objects will take a toll. IMHO, if you have the guys to run it over with a gas lawn mower, you can do it with this one. Just keep the blade sharp.

IPX4 is just protection against *splashing* water. Not sure I'd risk spraying that off. Still - great review! Plan on upgrading my current 20" EGO push with the new model.

+EnochLight They had this mower under a serious amount of water at an expo. This is a lawn mower and if you cannot spray it off to clean it, then... well... It should not be called a lawnmower. I fully understand what you are saying though. We have seen this unit get hit with water without issue!

+WorkshopAddict - interesting. Thanks for the info. Perhaps they are erring on the side of caution and rating it IPX4, then? Still, the first-gen had a lower rating and I've cut wet grass without issue on that bad boy. Would really like to be able to spray off the bottom though (the first gen requires that you wipe it off with towels/rags and no spraying water).

+EnochLight You are exactly right... I believe they said not to get the first one wet at all for the most part. I do not think they want people to take a power washer to the unit, but it has to be cleaned!

Hey hun, sorry to bother you and not sure if you are still checking these comments, but I have a question. So I live on about 1 1/2 acres and already have an actual riding mower and field trimmer, but I want a good "push" mower for certain parts of my property. My riding mower recently started having issues and by the time it gets repaired it will be over 4 weeks, by then (I live in Texas) the weeds on my property will be everywhere. I own gas everything, but this mower really intrigues me. My question is, battery powered products (I had a battery powered edge trimmer and I had to charge it every 15 min) make me nervous because in my experience the battery dies before you can finish what you are doing which is annoying. How long does this battery last if you are, lets say, trimming about 1/4 of an acre with TONS of weeds on it? It honestly won't even be cutting actual grass at this point because my weeds have taken over after my riding mower broke down. One reviewer said he only got 20 min on the battery, but I looked at other reviews and no one else said that, they all said it was great. Thanks so much and sorry for such a long comment :-).

I have never tried cutting weeds with this mower. I can tell you that 40 -65 minutes is average on this mower. The battery charge time is about 45 minutes. So, in your case, the absolute worse case would be that you needed two batteries to cut the weeds the first time, after that, one should do. But I am thinking worse case. Some people say weeds and one would need a brush hog..... I think you will be happy with this brand and mower. If you do not like it, return it.

Excellent instructional video. I just bought this mower on www.homedepot.com based on this review. I'm done with gas, spark plugs, oil, noise, and weight. At 54, I'm sure I'm going to love this mower. I'll update my comments once it arrives. Thanks for a really good video summary.

My only two hesitation about the model with the self-propelled feature are these... 1) How much heavier is the mower compared to the non-self-propelled mower? 2) If I'm not using the self-propelled feature when cutting my grass...is it more difficult to push (am I working against an engaged gearbox of some sort)?? Thanks in advance if you can answer these two questions for me!

There is a very small motor that runs the battery powered self propelled. so, it might be a pound or two more, but not much! If you are using it without the SP option, it is just like any other mower.

It only has a 20" blade. How can it cut 21"?

Have you guys been able to take it out and put it to use yet? Any feedback compared to last years model? I was about to get one until I tried a friends 20" model. It had great reviews but I was underwhelmed by the power compared to my old budget (Honda 160 powered) gas mower. It definitely made me have second thoughts about changing systems.

Last weekend we had the EGO, ECHO and Greenworks out testing for runtime and power. If you get the self propelled (only one I have) you will be impressed by the power increase over last years model. We mowed 3 acres of lawn with these three models...... It sucked but we got to know them. I am a bigger is better guy and I could use the 21" without issue. I took it through grass that was not mowed at all last year and it did not bog or stall. I think the 7.5 Ah battery does a lot for it. We got 55 minutes of runtime on it. We charged and ran it 3 times. Still doing more testing before the video.

+WorkshopAddict Awesome, thanks for the feedback! Looking forward to the new videos.

+WorkshopAddict Would you guys want to throw a decent gas mower into the comparison? Seems like none of the battery powered shootouts include a gas control. Or they put some old $200-300 junker against $500-600 battery units. I think it would add some insight if you guys like the idea.

+Greg Geis I am working on the runtime and cut tests of this now. That is a great idea and we have a top of the line Honda to put in the mix! Give us some time and it will happen.

According to EGO, you cannot use a hose to wash off the mower.

Allan Reiss of course you can. Just pop the battery lid open and wash it out.

I look at this mower and see two things that would concern me: A lot of plastic and very spindly front axles. I see that it is rear wheel drive which is a positive. Not thrilled with no rear discharge (other than the bag). I find that this works 10 times better than a side discharge chute, especially in tight areas. I think I will keep my Honda for awhile and see how this pans out over the long run.

Love mine. I disagree that being able to use the self-propelled feature when the battery is low is a "huge" feature. This thing is so light and easy to push even in tall grass that I often don't even bother with the self-propelled. Plus the drive motor adds a little bit of noise (not much but a little). I love the fact that I can have my patio speakers playing music while cutting the yard!
