I think the fact that it's in Japanese has a lot to do with it. Not saying that's a good reason, I like it and I've no idea what she's saying, but it might be more popular if she say in English. I think there've always been good bands that never really got very far though. I think The Monochrome Set, who Ego Wrappin' covered, are an example. Being a bit 'quirky' probably doesn't help either- bands with a very unique style can be successful, obviously, but generally they're surfing some kind of wave- why some do and some don't though, I'm not sure. Perhaps there's just not enough room in the limelight for too many oddballs.
