Uplift has been increasing pretty quickly at Campi Flegrei, and in 2019 Campi Flegrei has uplifted by 18.5 cm, and this year it is uplifting even faster, but nowhere as fast as the 1984-1985 period.

Wonderful lecture. I am shocked that there are between 30 and 40 active volcanoes in Iceland, and the island has a major eruptive event on average every five years yet this volcano alone produces more co2 then the whole of Iceland.

Though I'm merely an ordinary person with an intense interest in volcanoes, I really enjoyed this video. The data and information were presented in a clear, matter-of-fact manner without the sensationalism I so often see in videos and documentaries aimed at the 'ordinary' person. If we are interested in the subject, then we are after good information, well and clearly presented, so that we can properly understand what is going on. Excess hyperbole and melodrama amy be entertaining for some, but then, we don't watch this kind of thing to be entertained.

Here we are in 2020 with Etna currently erupting. But none of the people are evacuating. They could end up frozen in time like the residents of Pompeii.
@georgobergfell3 жыл бұрын
Etna is a lot more predictable and is most likely not going to have a large explosive eruption

Great vid....complex material handled and presented very well by Paolo.....went to visit Solfatara in Sept 2018, ( I am a retired Geology teacher),however it was closed to visitors as the local authorities are still sorting out Health and Safety following the deaths of family members who fell into a fumarole / mud geyser. The park is expected to re-open in 2019. Let's hope so!! I now know how to pronounce Campi Flegrei correctly.....thank you Paolo

The capstone on top of this volcano is really strong because the yellow pumice from 15k years ago turns to concrete when mixed with Lyme and water. This geologic setting creates a capstone almost exactly like the famously strong concrete Romans used to build their cities, because all they did was add some Lyme to the yellow pumice and they had a really strong concrete. So basically the previous eruptions have increased the chance of an explosive eruption because the caldera is capped with concrete like pumice in many/most places. I think it’s probably really good that it’s venting all that CO2 it means it has a way to the surface through faults and fissures. The uplift he showed and the graphs weren’t comforting though and had me rethinking that lol.

I lived in Napoli for seventeen years and I climbed to the top of Vesuvio and I visited most of the region. I am more than sure that the outcome of a pyroclastic flow alone will kill millions.

Very good description. Very good lecture. Ash in English, is still said as 'ash' in plural. Not 'ashes', unless referring to the product of cremation .👌
@anthonyjenkins58892 жыл бұрын
Unless when referring to more than one type or variety of ash. Also in my rural neighbourhood when we clean out the woodstove we place the "ashes" on the icy driveway. A metaphor for life perhaps. I am a car guy so may request such a final disposition.

a lot has happened over the last few years, over these lockdowns I have been enjoying finding out about the connections between increasing volcanic activity and the sudden reaching of some climate change tipping points. In the UK almost all scientific information is becoming more and more deceptive and patronizing. I have always tried in life to be unbiased and live by scientific principles.....not easy when the bible is taught as the absolute truth in Wales, but my science teachers always gave me special treatment :) accept for that physics guy that made fun of me for 2 years for suggesting there must be a black hole at the center of the galaxy for it to spin the way it does....off topic :) I miss science so much but school left its scars and I faint every exam now :) even with 95% pass rate for the whole year, still need to pass an exam, so housewife that breeds chickens it is then ;) does anyone know any other good videos that might scratch a brain that's just itching for information that wasn't designed for 5 year-olds to understand. This video was full of satisfying information and I have been stuck at home mostly alone since the Christmas before last, its like my thoughts have turned into brain soup ;) the internet is so full of rabbit holes and damage control, everything important is controversial and needs to be explained to the public by the right people.......its so frustrating when the religious school is gone but then a new religion envelops your whole world . Just like the pagans that worshiped trees only for Christians to go and change Jesuses birthday so that those trees automatically become a sign of worship to him. I honestly think this new world order has everything to do with the runaway greenhouse effect, seems that everything kicks off as soon as signs of climate change reach new levels.
