Hi, if you dry the leaves, you can sprinkle them on your salads. They add a lovely slightly lemony earthy taste to them.

I really love this amazing plant, am from Nigeria & we eat it cooked soup, the mucilaginous nature when cooked aids the consumption of my of starch food. I preserve dry & packed crumbled leaves for all seasons consumption for sale

This plant is common in Japan and having eaten it a lot, I can say that the flowers and seeds can make a person feel nauseous. For me that included the leaves I ate during the flowering time. Whether that still stands true once its pickled I've no idea, and perhaps it doesn't make everyone feel the same way, but I thought it worth sharing.

In Ilocano it's called Saluyot, it's cooked with garlic also with bamboo shoots, a little bit of fish sauce (Bogoong).

Jute! Those are abundant here in the Philippines and we call them Saluyot. There's also the japanese variety which we call giant saluyot because it grows faster and has bigger leaves.

I love pickled okra too. I use mustard seed, garlic, rice wine vinegar for sweetness and a little fermented cherry peppers for a little kick. Add other ingredients as desired. Have you tried jewels of opar (Talinum paniculatum) for greens? That is my favorite.
@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL7 жыл бұрын
d hamby - I like your recipe! We don't have jewels of opar, but I finally have the seeds for next year. I tried it in the Learning Gate School Garden. We though we had it back on the farm, but learned that it was mislabeled as soon as it went to flower - turned out to be Thai waterleaf/Ceylon Spinach ~Mel

Now that's a video. Can't wait til the seeds get going.
When you first started this Pete (or really kicked it in), I thought you were responding to a 30 day challenge from Justin...now we get great video's from you guys every day ! :) Love my Egyptian Spinach but never considered all the myriad of potential uses...What is interesting is last yr I was really worried about this reseeding everywhere...since some seeds had scattered...but amazingly, the only ones that readily came up were those I collected & planted in a raised bed ! Very pleased with that... ! Thx !
@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL7 жыл бұрын
Jeff - we've only had a couple plants reseed themselves & thankfully it has worked out without looking too chaotic. Yes, we thought the 30days was just for kicks, little did we know that we would end up enjoying it so much or that we would have enough content to keep sharing. This whole experience has changed a lot for us & we can't wait to see what else comes up down the road! ~Mel

We almost never eat them raw in the Philippines. They're boiled and then get a bit slimy, like okra. Not surprising since they're the same family.

I saw lots of Egyptian spinach in a garden today. I asked the lady in the garden if the plants were grown from seed because I haven't seen them offered locally anywhere as potted plants. She said yes it was from seed. She then pulled up an entire plant with some roots and handed it to me! It's 5' tall! Will it grow if I cut it back and stick it in the ground? I live in USDA zone 10 in Florida and I would love to add this plant to my garden. Is it necessarily an annual or could it perhaps be grown as a short lived perennial here in zone 10? I'm hoping the latter. There's no seeds on the plant she gave me.

Can they thrive in containers as well. I just planted some today on my balcony in San Antonio, trying to get a head start on them .
@doloinc4 жыл бұрын
Yes. I left some in a 6 gallon pot and they still produced dozens of seed pods, so bigger pots will allow it to reach it's potential. Very resilient and nutritious plant. Easy to see why it is so precious in the middle east

@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL7 жыл бұрын
John Tamez - Yeah 1st Friend! The rain has been pretty minimal over here. Lol with the papaya! I (Mel) am with you on the funky mix of musk & hydrochloric acid with the smell of the papaya, unless it's ice cold. Everyone reacts different - Pete loves them & they pretty good with lime. I like green papaya salad too. The savory smells & spices cover it right up. no seeds for papaya at this moment. We'll be shooting a video with Gavin's seed opportunities tomorrow & it should be up Sunday or Monday. ~Mel
