Thanks for the video. GMRS can go up to 50 watts (depending on frequency) and use repeaters. I’m in Tucson and when using a repeater with a $30 handheld, can talk with people in California, northern Arizona and New Mexico. PL tones, DCS, CTCSS just limit who you can hear. If others don’t have any tone in use they can hear everyone who’s using tones, but the people with tones won’t hear non-tone users. Check out the RTL-SDR USB dongle. It can pick up analog and digital, FM radio, TV, CB, HAM, FRS, GMRS, satellite. Truly amazing little device.

Does anyone know how to progran color codes? There's no info in the manual. In the radio menu, there are numbers listed, but no corresponding colors. I saved a GMRS frequency from svce search to a bank, to scan, but the color, yellow, didn't save, and I couldn't do it manually. Thanks.

Thanks for this intro video. Helpful. My purpose of purchasing this was to listen to police. I didn't get any cops. I googled what cops use and they use frequencies in the 800s. This scanner stops at 500 but is sold as a police scanner. I don't understand that.

My guess is that the police department in your area has made the switch to digital technology. I believe Uniden does sell a digital scanner that is much more expensive. Railroads haven't gone digital because they need to be unified when passing through one area to the next.

You can try bank 5 on the scanner. It might be easier to search on the web for your location to find the channel and program the frequency in.
