As the Spanish idiom goes, "one of lime and one of sand" (i.e., a good and a bad thing have happened). The bad (so I end with the good): overusing of constipated screams. I've, sadly, seen people fight for real, and they do not scream on every move. I understand it's done to convey the violence of the action, but there are other methods (some of which you DO use). The good (which sets you above the rest): the guy not noticing havig been wounded until he sees the blood on his foe's blade. THIS I know to be often actually the case. Bravo on that.
@hazicha10 ай бұрын
hello, thank you very much for your interesting comments. as regards the screams, we will definitely think about that (you are right that the practise of a sound or a scream at an attack we use also comes from our school practise as it supports the move and exhalation, although there are also people who also shout at an attack to give fright or surprise opponent + as you say it is also a stage fight issue - anyway it is a very good comment to consider). thank you also for the positive one - we are really glad you confirm this case to be real as you seem to have experience, Best regards!

As a historical fencer and history buff, I love it! The cuts that don't penetrate the layers of wool and linen enough to cause real damage, the binding and winding, the threat management... Distance before the first move in each pass looks a little close, but I understand that's the name of the game when the action all needs to be in frame and close enough to se what's going on. And, exciting enough that people who don't know the first thing about how swords are really used would still be hooked by it. 5/5
@hazicha3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you very much for your positive comments, we also appreciate you focus on particular points. Well, it is interesting about the distance, thank you for the remark, the distance is one of the most important points for us. After exploring again I dare to say that the shooting from hand and the close-ups (unlike shooting the same fight from static camera in wide shot that we do at trainings to see all faults better) distracts the perception of the distance, however the distance is (hopefully) alright. Anyway you may be right in the end and we will take even better care next time. Best regards!
@patrickdusablon27893 жыл бұрын
@@hazicha the distance just looked a little close to me, but I may be mistaken, and it certainly wasn't ridiculously so as you see in most Hollywood fight sequences. Just a little closer than I'm normally comfortable with. But as I also said, I understand there are some compromises that need to be made for keeping the action in frame. This was a fight sequence better than 99% or more of what comes out of major studios.

Well done gentlemen. My mother was a commonwealth fencing champion in the 1940s and early 1950s. We've often talked about the poor examples a fencing in movies up until the 1980s. The 1977 movie the Duelists did an excellent job and Carradine and Keitel were disciplined and reasonably well trained in their swordsmanship. It is obvious that you have been Consulting the manuals and manuscripts. Also the quality of the weapons makes a difference in the outcome of the fencing. Would have been nice to see some two handed cross blocking and lateral attacks but you did an excellent job here
@hazicha4 жыл бұрын
your comment pleased us a lot, not only fo being so positive but also for your mentioning your mother - the fencing champion - it is rare to receive comments from sport fencers, especially of such a skill, plus for mentioning the Duelists which is also our favourite movie, not speaking of the choreographer William Hobbs. As regards the two handed cross blocking - yes, it would probably make the choreography richer, we sometimes use it, but of course during the (let us say "real") fight it is not so frequent and easy to get to it. As regards the lateral attacks, I am not quite sure whether I understand technically what you mean exactly (whether you mean it generally, or you mean a more definite technique or cut), anyway thank you for these incentives!

A conversation came up while myself and some club members were admiring this great video. What are your primary sources for the techniques shown here? I guessed mostly early KDF without much or any Meyer thrown in. All Liechtenauer or throw in some other stuff? No real judgment either way, just pure curiosity.
@hazicha3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your highly positive comment. As regards the question, the response would probably be better answered personally in a longer debate, but I will try in brief: 1) it is a stage fight in the first place but we try to use as many principles and techniques from the medieval longsword tradition as possible (principles first) - but see sub 4) below; 2) you guess very well - as primary sources we use “earlier” manuscripts of the Lichtenauer´s tradition, e.g. Danzig, Ringeck, Speyer, Lew, Hs 3227a in a way, but we hardly use Meyer and our knowledge thereof is limited:); 3) the more general background for our stage fights, as well as some elements and techniques (such as the execution of passive parries, threats, sliding off the opponents blade after parry etc.) comes from our teachers in the fencing schools since 1998 on (esp. Magisterium, Paridon, Digladior) who used more teaching sources; 4) we found out however that the effort to fill the stage fight with purely manuscript techniques one after another must not be exaggerated and is counter-productive. thank you for your clever question!
