Eheim pick up 160 thoughts and flow ,,,,

I'm using one of the Pickup 45s in my 20 litre tank, used it about 2 years now, I have 6 guppies, 3 amanos, 1 java fern and 1 anubias which has grown amazingly over the last 12 months. I have a small jewel carbon pad cut in half in the bottom, single strip of jewel fine pad on top of that then literally half of the fluval biomax media for a fluval flex tank on top. It gets cleaned every 10 days or so, with a 30% water change every 14 days. Nitrates never been above 10 ppm except for one 5 week stint where it climbed to 15 ppm. I have a 160 sitting spare, but I just got a fluval 107 that's going on the tank soon so I can free up some swimming space! Love the channel, keep it up!

Heater is excellent I had one for years and about to buy another. The flow issue will be because they work best at 45 degrees with the flow going on it

Thinking of getting this and cutting the middle bits out, and placing biomedia in it. If I took the prones out would that affect the motor at all you think?

I find it an ok filter its really just a pump sponge filter ,,,i will be moving to a fluval U 3 as i have had real success with them in the other tanks

@@AQUAGUYUK I bought a U3 today. I find the Eheim pickup 160 decent, but the fact tiny bits are floating past it annoys me. The sponge gets very dirty so it's clearly doing it's job, but I also feel it's too weak.

hey, i have this product, used it for a couple of hours before i decided to use another filter instead because i thought it was too noisy. that silent filter turned out to be weak trash so i switched back to the eheim one, but now i find that the flow rate is miserably slow, sometimes it just trickles down the outlet instead of having the strong gush like in your video. i've cleaned it in pond water, i don't think i could've installed anything wrongly as it is only a matter of sliding it back into place. the flow increased slightly when i added more water to the tank but after a few hours it's back to the miserable trickle. any ideas what i'm doing wrong or what i can do to fix it?

I did have an issue with the impeller fouling I replaced it and it worked so try cleaning all parts close to it as well

Firstly this one of best filters on the market. Also the suction pads your complaining about usually need to be on a flat surface not the edge of a bucket. Also your heater knows the top half is poking out of the water so thinks the tank is drying and that's why it's switching off and saying low flow. I'm sure after the 3 years since uploading you've figured this out already.

indeed the suction cups are rubbish on the three tanks its been used in the filter its self is as said ok nothing special it has minimal capacity and there are many other filters superior also the heater was full submerged and according to Fluval tech can be out of the water by 2 cm and the new version has fixed the flaws in the old model now ,but still didn't work properly that's why after three years never used Fluval heaters until they fixed it but its all about experiences and in the shop found many better alternatives than powered sponge filters and tripped heaters

@@AQUAGUYUK I've got the 160 in a small tank and I've turned the outlet back a bit but I think I've over done it tbh. I'm trying to figure how to reduce the outflow if you have any idea's But thanks for the reply I didn't know the heater could be kept out of the water I honestly think it's a stupid feature since they're supposed to shut down should water ever escape out of the tank. 😊🤟

@@Galaxyofbrian heaters are a strange this fluval techies say that most heaters fail open cooking tank contents but with theirs and AquaEL ultra they fail and switch off the Later you can have them on out of the water completely this was designed to stop fires if the tank empties now flow first you you can use the old ideas like deflecting flow with a squashed piece of pipe on the outlet but my go to is sponge i run several Betta and shrimp tanks in sub 60 ltr tanks so add a piece of plastic or rubber hose and put a bit of 30 to 35 ppi or pours per inch sponge lastly you can change the filter sponge to smaller pours this restricts flow

@@stephen-truthseeker How much is enough i mean it has the same amount as the 160 plus the cartridge's plus the media i keep a U4 running in my 200 and 125 so i can instant cycle a tank ready for fish and it along with a fluval 406 keeps my 240 cichlid tank awesome

@@stephen-truthseeker Hmm i guess i can only speak for myself but i use biohome media in most of my filters that and pumice stone and never get any issues that said even Richard admits its all about stocking if you over load your tank with fish you need more media and sponge is also a media so you need to take that into account ,Also half the amount of volume they say its for and you will never go wrong oh and has Richard ever shown you his aquariums ,,,,,No oh that's right all his knowledge comes from ponds which use deep bed substrates and able to filter anaerobically but the 160 has no media only sponge yet you prefer it ?

you getting low flow on the heater because the thermostat in these heaters is in the very top square section of the heater that needs to be fully submersed, you've got it out of the water

Sorry I didn't really explain this issue was in a tank with my angels and it constantly said low flow even when fully immersed i even tried a power head straight at it and that did help

It has a venturi see the who on the top disk and the suction is on a small bracket
