I am an attorney in child welfare court. I wish more (any) of my colleagues knew Arendt and this book in particular. I was trained at the UofC before leaving to lead a life of something more than marginal employment prospects and endless references back to my dissertation adviser’s favorite philosophers. The world outside the academy has both the pressing ethical and intellectual problems of the Ivory Tower and real stakes too because real present immediate and personally relevant lives hang in the balance. Maybe you guys should consider some outreach to your brother and sister professions, if you can sort out what they are. Smart people outside the academy will forgive you your collective learned defensive arrogance very quickly, just as I was forgiven (not on display here BTW). Good will goes a long way. Neighborliness matters.
