Eid al-Adha, also known as the "Festival of Sacrifice," is one of the two major Islamic holidays. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) as an act of obedience to God, before God provided a ram as a substitute for the sacrifice.
The festival marks the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage rites at Minā, near Mecca, but is celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It begins on the 10th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, and lasts for four days.
During Eid al-Adha, families who can afford it sacrifice a ritually acceptable animal-such as a sheep, goat, camel, or cow-and then distribute the meat among themselves, the poor, and friends and neighbors. It's a time for prayer, sharing meals, giving gifts, and visiting with friends and family.
The holiday also serves as a reminder for Muslims to sacrifice their desires, bad habits, and selfishness for the sake of God and community welfare. It's a period of reflection on the importance of sacrifice and commitment to Allah's commands. The greeting "Eid Mubarak" is commonly used among Muslims to wish each other a blessed holiday during this time.
