Eidechsen in Deutschland
- Westliche Smaragdeidechse (Lacerta bilineata)
- Zauneidechse (Lacerta agilis)
- Mauereidechse (Podarcis muralis)
Lizards in Germany:
There are a total of 5 types of lizards in Germany.
The largest are the green lizards
with the two subspecies
- Eastern green lizard
- Western green lizard
the sand lizard
the wall lizard
and the forest lizard, as the smallest species (not in the video!)
Here I try to differentiate between the 4 main types.
Their appearance, their habitats.
Especially the wall lizard and the forest lizard are difficult to distinguish. They both have different colors and patterns.
The wall lizard is a little larger, but that's not a sure trait, it could be a small wall lizard or a large forest lizard.
The tail is longer in the wall lizard, but that is not a safe feature either.
The forest lizards have a dark stripe on their back, but this is differently pronounced. They have larger scalles on their necks, but you don't always see them properly.
The habitat is different, however: the wall lizard prefers dry, warm, sunny, stony places. Rocks, walls, quarries, gravel pits and the like. The wall lizard also likes to climb rock or stone walls.
The forest lizard is the only lizard species here that likes to live in humid areas, including swamps, river or lake banks, harbor embankments and the like. The forest lizard does not like to climb, at best on trees where it can get up easily.

The forest lizard is the only lizard species here that likes to live in humid areas, including swamps, bogs, river or lake banks, harbor embankments and the like. The forest lizard does not like to climb, at best on trees where it can get up easily.
But I am not 100% sure whether it is always a forest lizard when it is not climbing up the rock.
