This was the first Everton game after the passing of Tommy Lawton. He succeeded Dixie Dean as Everton's centre-forward in the late 1930's and won the League Championship with the Toffees in 1938-1939. You could say that Lawton was the only one who could replace Dean, so it was fitting for the memory of Lawton that Everton made this game a goals galore.
