THAILAND MY LAND... RETIRING DISGRACEFULLY

Күн бұрын

I love living in Thailand but what I like about living here might not suit everyone because we are all different. In today’s video, I will show you some of the reasons that you should not come here to live depending on your outlook on life.
If you are thinking of retiring or living in Thailand, please take a look at my book “The Retire in Thailand Handbook” it’s crammed full of information to help you tiptoe over the logistics of making Thailand your home as seamlessly as possible.
The Retire in Thailand Handbook…tinyurl.com/36...
I am a retiree and though I love making these videos they obviously come at a cost to me as the cost of travel through the Land of Smiles when I make the videos takes a large chunk out of my pension. There are many “free” ways that would help me get recognised on KZbin, they include:
• If you like my videos on Thailand you can help me by pushing the subscribe button (which is at no cost to yourself).
• If you push “Like and Share” and leave a comment.
• If you watch my videos’ content all the way through until the end.
All of the above will give me more exposure and more viewing time on KZbin which then helps my rating on the KZbin site. I would appreciate your help to continue improving my video equipment to enable me to make more exciting videos for your enjoyment.

I have been living and working in Thailand and also neighboring countries for the past 20 years but would not retire here for precisely some of the reasons you mention. The restrictions on for instance starting a business with 51% Thai ownership is an additional one, which you do not mention in your list of 8, but something I would be interested in like an online business. The quality of life is deteriorating with bad pollution in the North, Bangkok but also now in Hua Hin affecting your health is another reason for me. Lastly the influx of Russians that are taking over in Phuket, Hua Hin etc, are for me personally another reason not to retire here, it makes me feel uncomfortable and also unsafe as they bring crime and mafia practices with them. Lastly Thai culture is rather closed, people are less friendly than before, and service is deteriorating. Society has become very materialistic - it is all about money - also in relationships. However, Thailand is still a good country to stay for say 3-6 months a year but not permanently and that is what I would do. These are my observations.

Hi Nils. I believe that it is foolhardy to go into business here . I love living here but I would never go into a business with 51% of my business being controlled by other people and I have heard some horror stories from many people who have. Likewise I wouldn't put a business in my girlfriend's name for the same reasons. I didn't put it in my list because my channel is mainly for retirees and part of the O-A visa stipulation is that you can't work here or open a business on the retirement visa. Yes pollution is a massive problem worldwide but very much so in Thailand. The people have definitely changed over the years but that's understandable with the many military coups over the years and then the 3 years of covid which made many people unemployed or lose their businesses. Plus it's a whole new generation now with a different outlook on life and expectations. The country should do more to stop the influx of mafia type people from not only Russia but China and many other Asian and western countries as well as the motorcycle gangs that have been getting more prevalent here over the years. Having said that when I look at what is happening in other countries that I have lived in such as the USA and the UK I am still happy that I chose Thailand to spend my retirement in, at least the woke culture has not arrived here yet. Cheers Ged

Being a retiree, back in the USA after 51/2 yrs in Thailand, healthcare has been great for me. I have medicare, parts A & B and a supplement plan that pays the remaining costs that medicare doesn't. And I get treatments and meds free from VA facilities. Healthcare outside of the USA is not affordable for me and get costlier as i age. Plus most global plans do not cover most pre-existing conditions.

A persons mindset is critical here. Thailand has everything it takes to make for a fantastic or a terrible life. It is the choices you make and how you think about things that makes the difference. Many people struggle in their own country when they retire. They cant adjust to the lifestyle change. Combining that with a new exotic country makes it doubly difficult. It is possible to spend all day at a beautiful hotel, beach, shopping centre, golf club, manicured garden, temple, swimming pool, restaurant and bar and think you are in heaven. When that gets repetitive or too expensive what you are left with isn't great and its up to you to make it work. Most expats don't live like wealthy tourists. If you were living in a country with neat lawns, curbs, footpaths, drainage, street lighting, garbage collection, ambulances, orderly town planning, policing, road rules, council maintenance, good building standards and roads then you will find Thailand pretty grubby if you cant adjust your expectations. Rising medical costs are a big problem everywhere now. In Australia it is getting too expensive to have even basic private health cover. There are now large out of pocket expense for doctor visits, skin checks and minor procedures. You can build a great life in Thailand and live economically but don't underestimate the planning, effort and adjustments you need to make.

Hi Russell. Thanks for your input and comments. I agree retiring to another country is not for everyone and I have seen many people make the mistake of moving to a not so developed country and finding it hard to adjust. To be honest that's what I like about countries like Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia they are not so developed and are not so strict on rules. Living in the UK, Australia and the USA I hated all of the petty government rules and regulations and restrictions. Cheers Ged

@russellgunther Жыл бұрын
@@thailandmyland...retiringd2351 I agree, coming from Australia, the simple, relaxed and unenforced regulations in Thailand gives me a great feeling of freedom. I can responsibly have a beer on the beach or do some house improvements without being anxious about breaking a thousand western style regulations. Its a huge plus for living in SE Asia. The downside is you rely on other people to also behave responsibly with these freedoms. I understand and accept why Thailand isn't all neat, tidy and maintained like Australia. Australia has many massive taxes and expensive council rates to pay for all of this. Thailand doesn't and this translates into a very low cost of living for their population and for expats. I have had some experience with local government in Thailand and they do a great job with the resources that they have available.

Hi Paul. Yes as in most countries tourists are tolerated here because they want your money but I have made some good Thai friends, who like me for who I am not just for the money. The Thai government do make it hard to be able to live here but I prefer that to my old country the UK who are letting anyone who come across the channel in and then giving them taxpayers money to house feed and clothe them. Here illegal immigrants are deported. Having said that I think that they could make it easier for retirees to retire here because we spend our money here 52 week's of the year every year not just for a few weeks while on holiday. Thailand also makes it hard for a foreigner to buy property here, but I also like that Thailand keeps the land for Thais unlike other countries that I have lived in such as the UK, USA and Australia where anyone from any country can come in and buy property which then pushes prices up for their citizens Thanks for subscribing. Hi Ged, thanks for a very thoughtful and informative vlog. I was all set to sell up all my belongings and retire to Thailand in October, but ultimately decided against it, at least for now. Health insurance was the biggest factor, not just the cost, but the fact that it excludes preexisting conditions. The other reason was another factor you mentioned-selling up everything. I just couldn’t bring myself to part with all the things I have accumulated over the years-books, antiques and hobbies, etc. I am still planning a trip in the spring or summer and perhaps I will change my mind when I get there. I will certainly feel unfulfilled unless I can experience beautiful Thai scenery and culture at some point in my life. Keep the vlogs coming and drive safely! Cheers, Colin

Thanks Erik for your input and comments. I am glad that you are enjoying my videos. It would be hard to give up all of the benefits that your entitled to. It's the same for me I need to live in Australia for 6 months of the year to receive free medical. I suppose if I ever got very sick I would have to return there to live. But you can still spend six months in Denmark and six months in Thailand so it's still a better life than many people have. Cheers Ged

In Norway you can keep all your benefits if you voluntarily pay the fee for it (to Folketrygden). Can`t you do that in Denmark too? Many Norwegians do that, because they have the same 180 days system out of the country as Denmark. That way they can live full time in Thailand, and whenever they want, go back for a short stay in Norway for their free health care, or any other benefits. But they then need to pay taxes to Thailand, based on the double tax agreement, so you don`t pay tax to both countries.

I agree...most don't give anything the real hard thought it needs. But I will say movers remorse can be avoided and I think if you're the kind of person that was never tied down or owned a home w all the creature comforts in your own country, it will be easier and have a higher contentment rate than those who do have all these lifesyle attachments. And yes language barriers what about reading important legal documents

I agree to disagree. I was "TIED DOWN" (married) for 45 years. I had the "CREATURE COMFORTS" ( a lovely house fully paid for in Australia and 4 investment properties in Tampa Florida and I have never had movers remorse and I love living here and find the majority of Thai people hard working, caring and no different from any other of the ten countries that I have lived in including Bermuda, Australia, the UK and the USA. As for reading important legal documents every lawyer that I have been in contact with here speaks English in fact my lawyer here is from the USA and he gives me written translated advice when I need his services. I think that many people who go and live in other countries expect a country that they left behind but with different weather and different language. I have never expected or wanted that. I love the different cultures and traditions and expect that the local people are going to have a different lifestyle than what I am used to and that is what I like about it and accept it warts and all. I lived and worked in Thailand for five years...I've already adapted to most of what you speak of...You just have to work through each and every obstacle you encounter...The health insurance is not nearly as expensive as it is in the States...You really CAN sell all of your belongings and come to Thailand with your clothes...because you can purchase EVERYTHING you need right here! The medical quality is A+ in terms of excellent doctors and the medical community! Come on to Thailand and you will adjust to most things and probably be surprised how wonderful EVERYTHING is here! Yes, you do need AC, but most places do have that! You will find reasonable prices here in rentals...You will be able to find someone to help you with household chores! You don't need to bring the furniture! You WILL be able to bring your cats and dogs with you! They will need updated vaccines -health record! And the people in Thailand are so warm and wonderful and helpful! Be brave and take a chance with the peace and an excellent level of living....And the food is GREAT! The language can be picked up little by little....It will be something to do when you come...learn the fascinating history of Thailand and learn some conversation....Korat, for example was a joy!

I have a few Thai friends in Hawaii that I’ve known for 40 years, they have US citizenship and are treated like everyone else. But then again, I think of my home Hawaii, which is totally colonized, many Japanese sand Chinese have bought properties in Hawaii and now it’s so expensive and less housing. I really admire Thailand for never being colonized. I know I will never be a part of their country and i am a guest here, that’s okay , my family lives here and that’s all that matters. Different strokes for different folks

I agree it's one of the few SE Asian countries that have never been colonised. I also love that they keep their land for their own people unlike many western countries where anyone with the money can buy land ,houses, and businesses. I sometimes complain about the immigration here making it hard for retirees to live here but it's a much better way to go than just opening their borders to anyone who wants to enter the country like some of the country's I have lived in.

The worst thing is the language barrier and if you’ve not got many English speaking friends out there you end up feeling like an outsider if your going do it learn the language and get in with expats that have lived it out there

Hi John. I have found that the language barrier is not a problem in the touristy areas such as Hua Hin, Pattaya, Phuket, Krabi and the islands. Going into the rural areas is sometimes a problem but Google translate normally gets me through. I have tried to learn Thai but my seventy year old brain can't seem to grasp it though I do have the basics to get by. As for expat friends I have some though I don't go out of my way to make expat friends as many of them but not all want to sit around talking about the old country. I have never felt like an outsider in any of the ten countries that I have lived in, I just try to mix with the locals and fit in. Cheers Ged

@@BrigitteCoetzee hi Brigitte we are considering moving to Thailand after growing up in Uk and having lived 35 years in South Africa and the last ten years in New Zealand and Australia it’s hard to find somewhere to retire comfortably and economically that understands the South African mindset . On the exchange rate Thailand is a good option, and after several trips a we worked out a budget could work with low retirement income levels .

You raised some concerns around the temporary nature of living in Thailand. Having lived in uk, New Zealand Australia and Southern Africa, these places allow a greater feeling of permanence. Following on from that shipping of personal effects ,animals etc is a part of that relocation. In this case however, I get the feeling of having a temporary lifestyle and storing stuff instead of shipping it to Thailand. I’m not worried about relocating, am already a homeless person so Thailand might offer more than just a place to work. Although lack of adequate income might be a challenge further down the track .

Hi Ged yes I can understand where your coming from, we are reluctant to leave after a visit and I guess the longer you stay the deeper the roots go down . Then there is the repeated visits to immigration that unearth that feeling of permanence . I’m beginning to think a 5050 split maybe the answer to this conundrum. Spending 6 months in Thailand and then collecting pension overseas and returning 6 months later. It’s a nomadic compromise lifestyle but might work .

@@user-fe1jg3gs8l Yes a fifty-fifty split is an ideal situation. The problem for me is that I don't recognise the country I was born in as being my own anymore and my adopted country Australia has changed so much and is so expensive also and the only reason I go back is to see family. I don't like the immigration system here but I respect it because they don't let people in that they don't want and Thailand is for Thais come first and foremost. As a foreigner I am not allowed to own land here compare that to Australia and the UK where anyone can buy land, or businesses. But I love living here even though I don't feel 100% accepted by the Thai government, the people have accepted me and that's important Cheers Ged

There are reasons Thailand have lost a large part of their market share in the retirement business in recent years. There are better and safer deals around where you dont get harrased as a matter of routine by authorities and where the policies in regard to retires is not likely to change for the worse next month or year by the whims of politicians. The Philippines ended on top of my cost/value/risk evaluation of retirement destinations . PH might be rough around the edges to say it at least, but as their tourism slogan goes: Its more fun in the Philippines. And its indeed a fun place, if you are not poor that is.

I really enjoy my stays there, and the 75 days stay available at present is a good amount of time to assess things better. I’m quite sure now that I will leave the Uk, my own preferences are Thailand or the Philippines. Thailand scores best on infrastructure, medical care etc. The Philippines scores best on being English speaking and I believe better visa options. It’s a massive step for anyone leaving their own country permanently, and your points made here are all valid and valuable. Private medical insurance at our age, is a problem wherever you live.
