He stopped at three because that is what gives rise to three dimensional space. If you apply it to a mathematical graph, you have a zero point that is the great ultimate ultimate-less, and from that you establish space and direction by assigning yang to be up, forward, right or left depending on your personal habit, yin being down, back, and again, right or left depending on personal habit. Using this graph, each trigram represents one of the eight octants of space. When we consider forces and the balanced nature of the universe, the trigrams also seem to indicate eight directions of movement through the perfect center of each of their octants. That's my guess. At any rate, I saw this pattern one day as I was contemplating the I ching

@@veneratlazulum2033 Tree of life has three pillars: mercy, judgement and mildness, you know. Yang is related to mercy pillar. Yin is related to judgement pillar. Mildness pillar is mixed of them in balance.

I wonder whether if for example a fourth line is introduced and we have quadgram and octagram on top of the trigram and hexagram, how many variations of each there will be? and whether or how it will enhance the interpretation? Similarly if more lines or even trigrams are further added even beyond that what the outcomes will be? It probably will be too challenging or maybe cumbersome for average human mental capabilities. If It took 6000 years for the third line to emerge, could it be that I Ching is still being evolved? AI and team efforts could greatly assist perhaps? Could I Ching turn into some kind of elaborated and advanced theory to further unlock the potentials of the universe? Or is it likely to be already at its maximum at its current form?

Very good thought. The fact was that not only you but many people did try to add more lines. But eventually it proves that 3 lines are more than enough to explain everything. 3 is an very interesting number. In I Ching theory, 3 also stand for 3 steps which everything is created.

@@MistofIChing Yes, and thinking on the question at the end of the video, maybe adding more lines would make it less clear. In the four lines example the could not be something in the middle. In fact, I think that nowadays it would be very difficult for us to try improve this book, before it was easier to see the patterns of the nature, but now we kind of make a shelter to avoid this nature. I don't know, maybe I'm freaking out a bit. PD: Thanks for your videos. I started in this whole world to improve and better understand my BaGuaZhang techniques and I'm loving it.

​@@MistofIChingI have to be that guy don't I lol. If three proved more than enough then why wasn't it reduced to two for efficiencies sake? This is my first contact with the I ching as of today so forgive me. Is it three, for the same reason the trinity is so fundamental in other traditions. Was the I ching developed as far back as the video suggested. Like 10,000bc time frame by essentially cave men? I heard it was developed much more recently than that. I mean clearly it's not that old what am I even asking. How could they construct and elaborate system such as this before they developed speech even. You said they don't know what a cloud is lol. I feel like if I'd developed this system it would have different correspondences. Lightning would not have been what springs to my mind. But then, they all seem to be weather related so if gonna stick to that system there's not many options. Earth quakes certainly seem more obvious though, far more destructive than a piddly lightning bolt. But I don't imagine the choice of lightning bolt was a random choice. Lightening better represents electromagnetism, although earth quakes also cause electromagnetic phenomena. Hell the iron core proported to be at the centre of the earth generates the entire planets magnetic field. That's definitely the biggest show in town in terms of our planet.

I really wanted to listen to this, but I am not a "guy" (believe it or not women study these concepts too). I did my best to look past this but sound effects were to painfully jarring. Plenty of other sources to review and deepen my sense of the trigrams. Too bad. I have a feeling the content of your video is good.

I am a woman too and yes Yang's content is very good. I first learned about the I Ching as a little girl when my dad was learning Tai Chi from a Grand Master from one of the 19th generation Tai Chi Masters from the Family that originally created Tai Chi. Now that I'm older I realize how important this and how much time I've lost not trying to study it sooner. I think getting hung up on Yang saying "guy" and a few loud sound effects is absurd and a bit ironic that you're letting that get in the way of hearing his message. Wherever you go, I hope you find what you're looking for.

@@Zimoria Critique is not absurdity to a content producer who wants people to watch their videos. Editorial type feedback is valuable to a confident creator. This video has major grammar problems (on top of what I mentioned) which, while not the end of the world, if corrected this content provider will be taken much more seriously. I agree with you about the IChing. I have practiced with it for over 30 yrs and it is amazing! I wanted something I could listen to while working for a review of trigram meanings as I am deepening my relationship to trigrams and how they relate in hexigrams as part of seeing the I Ching in life and interpreting readings without the text. I found this presentation too jarring, (actually causing pain) and commented honestly. Maybe you can recognize that my intentions toward the video creator are to help and hopefully get them to consider finding someone to edit the script since a lot of work is going into the video and it could be much more watchable with a little hard limiting (a simple effect that limits loud sounds) and editorial polish. It is nice of you to feel defensive for this video creator, but is it really helpful?

Please tell me if the following is correct: yang is unifying and independent, it is 1, like one unbroken line. Yin is relational, it is 2, like how the broken line contains 2 solid lines. So when yan (1) and yin (2) are combined, they make 3? So 3 lines is the principle that best represents the interaction of yin and yang together in the natural world (ie a trigram)?

Yang includes Yin, so 1 will include 2 not Yin includes Yang or 2 includes 1. 3 represents the interaction between yin and Yang is spotted on 😊

Wild guess...? Because we live in a 3 dimensional Universe.... EVERYTHING is based on 3 or a Trinity.... Even the Yin Yang doesn't represent duelism.... There are 3 parts to it.
