This reads like a well written fiction and it is all the more amazing because it is true. I have never studied this particular part of history and I find it fascinating. I just assumed the Dutch were boring people with a boring history. Oh how wrong I was.

Hurray, another masterpiece, a big one. Please never stop making history videos just like these, as they are incredible for anyone who are either well versed in history, or a novice. You might just be at the beginnings of a path to become the equivalent in history documentaries as David Attenborough is to nature films. Strong words, and I mean every single one of them. I hope to one day see English medieval history, as there is so much drama, backstabbing, kinslayeries & dirty politics and it would be so wonderfully entertaining if narrated by you.

Wow that is a lot of high praise for my humble little channel. Thanks for watching. I already kinda started on the English medieval backstabby bunch in the Macbethad series on this channel. There's a lot of England (and Viking) stuff in it. More is definitely to come. For the English the Hundred Years' War, War of the Roses, and the Tudors.

When I was writing the novel that battle at Warnsveld was a real pain in the backside to date! I read several accounts and they were all different (some due to the separate calenders I appreciate). I finally settled on October 2nd purely because it suited my narrative. Nice to know I didn't traduce Dutch history too much when covering this period. 🙂

Thank you so much for the hours and hours of entertainment. Beyond that, I've been in the planning stages of a novel set in the 16th century, so finding this series has been so invigorating. Finding massive inspiration here, and I can only hope that the intrigue and the characters I create can be half as fascinating as the history here, especially with how you present it. I don't pay for any Patreon but I'd absolutely make an exception for this channel.

I'm Dutch and the eighty years war is my favourite time in history. Back then there was much more to be proud of as Dutch people than nowadays. So I would expect mostly Dutch people would be attracted to this series. However I'm delighted that people of so many different nationalities seem to really enjoy this channel.

If a Gulden had a gold weight of 2.735 grams (1464), and the current price of gold (as of this writing) is 80,82 USD/g, then a Dutch carpenter in 1584 made about 44 208 USD/year (200 Gulden). That's actually way more than I make ahead of taxes as an unskilled Swedish labourer in 2024 (30 600 USD), although my take home wage is actually about 24 000 USD/year.

I hope that this series wont end at 1648, the official termination of eighty years' war, but will continue to 1672 (rampjaar) or, better still, to 1678, termination of the franco-dutch war.

Well, this series will end at the end of the war. But I am preparing a series about the De Witt Brothers, and that is a sequel to this. Thanks for watching!
@sahhaf12343 жыл бұрын
@@DefraggedHistory Actually, heartfelt thanks for preparing this series!!! De Witt brothers is very good news. it seems that the series will go at least up to 1672. And if it is extended to 1678, no rope will be left dangling.. Actually, have you considered preparing a parallel series on dutch golden age which will cover the cultural aspects of the same time period? Not only artists but scientists like leeuwenhoek, swammerdam, huygens, lawyers like grotius and religious figures like arminius and bourignon..

@@sahhaf1234 Not to 1688? William III invading England and plotting, with John Locke among others, to make it bloodless is such a great story and truly a turning point in history.
@sahhaf12343 жыл бұрын
@@DenUitvreter The later it ends, the better for me.. But she seems quite determined to end it at 1648, at the proper end of 80 years war. And her planned de witt brothers series will probably end at 1672 (death of brothers) or 1678 (end of dutch-french wars). Actually the best end date for me is 1702, the date of death of william of orange.
@DenUitvreter3 жыл бұрын
@@sahhaf1234 "In der Beschränkung zeigt sich der Meister." and it's about the 80-years war after all and the amount of detail is the product of the focus of course. I wonder what would happen if Henry III agreed to become the sovereign of the Netherlands. Would the Low Countries become a part of France by today?
@DefraggedHistory3 жыл бұрын
Ask Napoleon how that worked out for him! 😄 If anything, we went from being a republic to a kingdom after his conquest.
@DenUitvreter3 жыл бұрын
Ironic isn't it? The first republic that showed god's wrath for challenging the divine right of kings was not that bad, to put it mildly, and was the nursery of the enlightenment where the philosophers had their books printed without prosecution or even lived and worked, was made into a kingdom as a result of the French revolution. First by Napoleon, later by the British who wanted a buffer monarchy between France. The Dutch gave the British their parliamentary monarchy and bill of rights by invading in 1688, and we got an absolute king back from them.
