Hello everyone! It's been a while and thank you for the outpour of comments and messages on my previous videos. I'll be more active from now on and make more videos related to English teaching and life in Japan in general.
In this video, I compared working at an Eikaiwa and being an ALT in Japan as I worked as an Eikaiwa teacher for over 3 years and have been working as an ALT since last year. Many of you messaged me and ask which is better but I think only you can answer that yourself based on your needs and personality. I hope I covered all possible aspects but if I missed some, please feel free to share them below.
See you soon!

Hi, Selda! Thank you for this very detailed comparison of ALT and Eikaiwa. I just wanna ask, which would be a better choice for professionals just starting to teach in Japan? Is ALT even possible for people teaching in Japan for the first time? Also, is teaching in Japan possible for someone with only an arts degree from a non-teaching course?

I’m currently in the interview process for an ALT and an eikawa. I really want the eikawa job for the following reasons (I could be wrong). But this is based on my independent research and from what the companies have told me. - ALTs are often if not always sent to rural and suburban areas. I have no desire to live in a rural or suburban area. I currently live in a large major city in the US, and I’m used to city living, and I don’t drive. The Eikawa I’ve been interviewing with has many locations and they’re all located in busy parts of major cities. - At the Eikawa I can make my own schedule. They told me that the peak periods (when you’re most likely to get lessons) is early morning, from 7am-9am, and from 5pm-9pm, plus all day on weekends and holidays. I struggle a lot with mornings, so my goal would be to only do evening and weekend classes. At an ALT, I would have to get up very early every morning in order to get to class on time. - because midday is apparently slow, I envision I can spend that time exploring, shopping, and hanging out with friends when I eventually make some 😂 - they told me that you make your schedule a month in advance and can block off any days you don’t want to work. Of course, the more availability you have, the more potential for earning. - I have worked in customer service and retail sales for many years, so I don’t think the selling aspect would be difficult for me. However, so far in the interview process they’ve never mentioned having to sell. - I have cats and I will not abandon my pets. Every ALT I have contacted has told me that because they arrange your housing, they will not allow you to bring pets. With the eikawa I’m interviewing with, they asked if I was planning on bringing pets and they basically said it’s ok, it’s just on me to figure it out. Cons in my opinion (from what I’ve learned so far): - your earnings are based on how many lessons you get, and when you’re brand new you won’t get many lessons. I’ve heard there can also be competition with the other teachers. - you’re hired as an independent contractor; I know at least in the US this makes taxes more complicated. - also, being hired as an independent contractor means you’re not offered health coverage through the company, but I’ve heard this isn’t too expensive (at least way less expensive than the US) - having to dress in more “formal” office attire. I don’t even own a single blazer so I’m going to have to buy new clothes for work.

@@christianapepple6476 I just moved to Tokyo last week and I’m getting settled in. My job doesn’t start for a couple of weeks so I can’t really say whether or not I like it yet. There has been very little support for starting life here (like getting an apartment, phone number, bank account, registering with the city, etc). I had to do everything on my own, by myself. It’s been difficult since I don’t speak Japanese but as far as people who work in customer service, they’re all very nice and they try to help.

You'd definitely still need at least a Bachelor's degree to fulfill the immigration's visa requirements. You may submit your application, but you'd still have to go back to your home country to process your application.

Good evening, ma'am! I just got a bit confused regarding the hiring protocols regarding ALTs and Eikawas. If I fathom it accurately, we can apply to Altia, Borderlink, and Interac directly. On the contrary, we need to have Philippine agencies to apply as English Teachers for Eikawas. Did I understand it correctly or do we need agencies regardless of the position. I applied to Bison 3 weeks ago However, I haven't received a reply from them. I reckon it might be because they are concentrating on their headhunting for China or I just didn't pass their qualifications. If possible to apply directly to ALT companies, I'd like to give them a shot and perhaps I can make my dreams a reality this year. Thank you so much for reading and responding to my comment and inquiries. P.S. Amazing video as always. Immensely informative!! Thank you so much for this!😊😊😊

Hello! Both types of jobs require an applicant to have a Philippine agency. You may still apply directly to companies in Japan but you need to make sure that you'll find an agency in the Philippines that will represent you. This is usually an issue for companies here that's why they prefer to hire directly people who are already here.

Any Dispatch company that allows you to pick the prefecture of your preference?
@crisxseldainishikawa
@crisxseldainishikawa Жыл бұрын
Most dispatch companies consider the applicant’s choice of location as long as they have a contract in that area. If there are no positions available in the applicant’s first choice, recruiters usually offer other options that are available to meet the applicant’s needs. Best of luck!
