John, Absolutely love and admire all the work you have done. Watched a lot of your videos and had a wonderful night doing so. Especially the winter part. I'm wondering how you get to the center of the layout if something goes wrong? I think I can see some openings in the scenery but not quite sure. Really curious what you are going to add when the extension becomes reality. I'll definitely keep on checking back. Thank you so much!

Jacques thanks for all your kind words, there are 3 opening in the so called "middle part" one near the castle, the gas tanks and before the curved viaduct, mind you in my younger years I was able to walk onto the layout, today I'm slightly heavier and not so good doing a balancing act on one foot, however there is one place, access is a bit squeezy, there is a track behind the snow modules and the access is only from underneath the snow board but to strengthening the snow board module I've added some timber supports and this lets me just to get my hands reach the track. our aim is to extend the garage, as you already know, we've got the steel but lacking on submitting the plans to the local authority + its pretty hot through the summer days. all the modules are finished and a couple of videos I'm showing the other modules, e.g. Bonn Station, the extension of the freight yard, all in all another 4 modules. the strange thing with my layout is, there is no fiddle or hidden station yard, we compromised the engine shed, transfer table and sold it when we re-configured the layout and all its left is 2 transfer table engine sheds. when the modules are all put together you will see there had been made provisions to extend the layout on both ends but I think this is now dead dream, this was to replace the roundhouse sheds with 2 turntables (electric, steam and diesel locos) and more provisions for freight rolling stock and on the opposite site a dead end station with provisions with passenger rolling stock but this would have taken the layout width to 10 meters and we just don't have the room for this. the initial design was with no restrictions or compromises but we've been lucky the garage provided most of the space in width, not much spare room but just to be able to walk around it. I've forgot another access spot is by pushing back the city and this gives you room to reach anything from the other side of the castle including the trolleybus highway. What becomes apparent and unless there are dozen of people operating the trains some of the shunting or assembling rail stock is no longer viable, e.g. the diesel filling depot and the brewery, exchanging locos from train to train, so in some ways it has lost its fundamentally core operating function what a railway represents, the only compensation for this is suppose the scenery, overhead system and the variety of long and close to prototypical trains, there will be shunting operations take place but not in an integrated and overall running layout. My son came up with a revision plan to change some of the track configurations because of the complicated nature, trains crossing over with too many other trains and the original half snow half coalmine is now a snow scenery on its own which I must admit, I'm happy with but here again more room would have been an advantage instead of a width of 1.2m, I would have liked it to be 1.5m and unfortunately, which I should have put my foot down, the length is not 4.8m but rather 4.5m, this would have meant to extend the module behind it by a 300mm insert between the viaduct and the s-curve going up to the snow modules, at the same time the bridge on the snowboard would have covered a valley and you could have seen through instead of having a rock wall behind it and my creation was to create another bubbling creek. In principal I'm not a person for changes but my sons' explanation satisfied me to go ahead with the alterations and I'm pleased with the overall results. one can rebuild and rebuild but in our case I think this is it. the overhead system it self, it took me years to understand how to constructit because we didn't have an electrified rail system in Perth, than I used corrosive flux to solder the wires which more or less ruined the wires and it was only until recently I'm using a tube with gel non corrosive flux, and the results are promising and I hope everlasting.

6109river John, Thanks again for taking the time to explain everything with such detail. Getting up there myself in age, I know what you mean. I started the bench work for a new layout but have to try to stay realistic on the access part. You definitely have inspired me to build a snowy layout. I love how the lighting reflects of the white surroundings. Even although I still have a couple of years to go before full retirement (5) I work on it of and on as I travel a lot for my professional life. In the meantime I'll check back with regularity to see your wonderful endeavors on the progress even although I feel that your layout is already quite an accomplishment that many wish for and few gain. My hats off! Best regards from sunny California. Cheers!

awesome layout might i ask how long you've been setting this up?
@6109river
@6109river 10 жыл бұрын
the layout started back in 1984 and since than has been or more precise lately has been modified by changing some of the track configuration and added quite a bit of the overhead system to it, of course there is still 6 meters missing and until we extend the garage the layout is not complete. all the modules are finished and stored away in cages. setting it up is a nightmare as you have to program locos for the right tracks and sidings so they can break correctly in front of a signal, than the track has or overhead wires have to be clean and than you can have trials before taking a video but there is no guarantee everything will go smoothly.

Louis Jagerman because some one put it there and forgot to take it off, videos always show bits and pieces you don't expect to see and sometimes its for the better, in this case you've managed to pick an item which shouldn't be there, we are not claiming we are perfect but I'm intrigued, watching over 14 minutes and this is your impression of this video, just have a look at Jacques Vogelaar comments
