And people say that pop music is unintelligent. If it wasn't doing something clever to appeal to people it wouldn't be such a success. Okay there are a few exceptions, like Hotline Bling which was more viral marketing than music, but mostly there's a reason a hit is a hit.

I really liked Hotline Bling, from the minute I heard it. The main beat, as I later found out, was actually a sample from a 70s classic, Timmy Thomas's Why can't we live together. And honestly Hotline Bling left it relatively unchanged, save a tempo increase and a bit of a tightening up. So if you don't like the beat, blame Timmy Thomas lol. Regardless, I think the song would have been a hit even without the memes, as it's super catchy and unique, compared to today's music anyway.

Beethoven's fifth did not cause a stir because the opening bar has no first beat... many previous works use motifs and themes which are rhythmically identical to that opening, including Haydn's work. Still love the video, but that symphony did not cause a stir for that specific reason...

As other people in the video have stated, Max Martin had a huge part in this. Pop stars and rappers (unless musically talented themselves) almost always have a producer in the studio to write tunes. Max, Weekend and other producers worked on this to make it what it is.
