Once when I told my mom how interested I was in philosophy she told me in a jokingly manner: "no don't go on a philosophy college, you'll end up smoking weed and only talking about life with no action." The problem with philosophy as a job is that philosophy is something we should all practice in our daily lives to better understand ourselves and the world around us. Philosophy as a structured profession is a fraud, because paying someone to tell you what to think is antithetical to the discipline.

Hi, i smoke weed and talk about life with no action. To me, when i started to see, it created a feeling of not wanting to participate in this mess. Especially, in my lifetime things started to change for the worst and i dont agree with those changes. I have nothing against my fellow humans, we are in the same boat. But to me, society is a play of pretend and manipulate, hamsters in a wheel that run until they die without ever having lived. To me, that sucks. I wish it was different. He who doesnt comply cant be ruled, is my philosophy I know this sucks. But to me, it sucks less than being someone's "hamster". Its not ment as a insult, so, no offense

Very true. If you were to just endure the desire, and don't act out of it, then you can truly see its true color. This is why having a moral code or precepts is so important. To wisely set a limit for ourselves is to come closer to actual freedom.
@elonever.2.0712 жыл бұрын
Exactly. When I have an intense desire for something of great cost I clear my mind and imagine that I already bought it and go through the pleasure of owning it and all that those feelings mean. Most of the time I realize that I want the item because I believe it will provide something that is not relevant to its purpose like people liking me solely because I own it, Most of the time in the end I realize that I didnt want the item at all, I just wanted the status I believed it would bring...and I lose the desire for it. But if after going through this mental exercise I still find a need for it then I start giving it some real consideration.

At a certain point in my life I had nothing, I learned to be happy with the simple things; eating well, sleeping well and not wanting anything. I needed things but I let the universe bring them to me. For example I needed a new door for my house which I could not afford to buy new. One day I crossed a man that had one outside his house. He gave it to me. Sometimes it’s just easier to let things happen instead of searching for ways to MAKE things happen. Or to WANT these things to happen. Just an experience I hope that everybody can find peace ✌️

I think its important to note when considering this, that even the monks that devoted their lives to removing desire from themselves ultimately never really managed to do it, even with employing all kinds of strategies to try and be rid of desires. I think in the end, the most important thing is to cultivate how you think about yourself and your desires, and where they come from. And dont be hard on yourself for your wants. These desires are there for a reason, you just need to figure out why is it there and if thats the course to get to the underlying goal. And sometimes it is.

I really dislike how people says "Shopping is my therapy" or "my starbucks coffee gives me happiness". No, happiness and pleasure are not the same thing. You can experience pleasure all day long and still feel empty by the end of the day. They are doping themselves to stay away from pain rather than purchasing these things for an authentic happiness or a real need. It´s not bad to give yourself nice things, but pursuing pleasure 24/7 leads to be slave to the things that give those nice feelings and distract yourself of the uncomfortable ones, and because of that, you don´t know how to deal and cure your pain, because you don´t longer know where it comes from. Knowing where your pain comes from and allowing yourself to feel it, it´s the first step to transform it and heal

When got into Buddhism and martial arts I started training myself to ignore desires until I forget about them. I can control most of my wishes very well now, living a strict and simple life without consuming anything I don't need or highly value. But the problem is, I don't enjoy going shopping or receiving gifts anymore, I don't enjoy going out with friends as I could do something more useful in that time. I kind of became like a soldier in my mind. So I think it's very important to find a middle way and still honor our desires. Also, it is important to separate one's own needs from the needs that were advertised. Advertised needs are those with a lack of individuality (though it looks like they have it), which means it is for the masses, not for individuals. Thus, individualism means expression of oneself and understanding one''s own needs, not the needs of others. And it doesn't mean that one should be a jerk. Helping others may be one's own need, why not?

Very, very thought-provoking. I'm currently struggling with the pain of "lacking", due to hardship. Normally, I'm well equipped to deal with life's ups and downs.. but I'm currently being touched a little again by that "black dog" (anxiety/depression).. brought on, I think, by the extreme stress I've suffered in the past year, and the past 3 months in particular. So when I saw the title of this video, my mind immediately reminded me of a quote I invented some years back: "Isn't the absence of pain what happiness makes?!" My quote touched on what you're talking about.. you take it much farther.. thank you for that. From studying the Buddhism and Taoism, I've known for some time that desires and attachments often lead to suffering. Currently, dealing again a bit with the black dog - I just want the pain to stop. Yeah. I'm coming at this from a slightly different direction, tempered by my mental state.. but listening to these words helps nevertheless. I find personally that when I'm experiencing hardship and suffering, moral support - such as offered by this video message - is most welcome, helpful, and soothing. So, thank you, Einzelgänger.

Always satisfying our desires, and indulging in them, only makes these desires stronger. But if we learn to moderate our desires or even reject them altogether, they will weaken. When our desires weaken, we experience less dissatisfaction and, thus less pain. We feel less in debt and more content. If we don't experience the pain of discontent, we don't need pleasure to end it.

This is soo true, when i have school I looked forward to having the summer holiday and i thought this is going to be so fun, and then i am halfway in and gaming no longer feels fun and i get grumpy and when im not gaming i felt bad.

OMG, this is wisdom, it should be taught in elementary, and it should be encouraged in our families... This video puts into the right words the feeling I've always had towards the capitalist culture and the slavery system in which we waddle and crawl. I give my lifetime to a company so that company gives me currency, a currency that I will use to make someone else my slave for a few moments.. call it the restaurant chef, the store guy, a mechanic... you pay them to do things you don't want or don't know how to do. At that moment we accept that our lifetime is sellable, and we can measure how much a year of our life is worth... this is so fucking wrong in so many ways.

I really don't like that you're soo damn right.. That's why I chose to work less hours and get more time for myself and loved ones..

@@chuchui666 hm dunno.. I got so many questions from coworkers why I work reduced time and my simple answer was always that I want more time for me and my hobbies.. They were baffled and thought I needed the time for starting my own business.. ;)

"A little bit of self inflicted discomfort or the right kind of stress in the day goes a long way." Over the years, I've come to feel as though it's why doing a great workout, one which skyrockets the heart rate and gets a good sweat on is proper meaningful. And getting out of a nice warm bed and jumping into a freezing cold shower where you're solely focussed on your own breathing is a wonderful kick up the arse to start the day. Society as we know it moves at like a thousand mile an hour, and it rarely slows, and never stops. But it's the little things that helps us to step back from that crap for a short while and just gather our own positive thoughts 😉
