Carbine...Gibby has earned the right to handle things that way. Umpires build relationships with coaches and players and they know the dynamics involved. If they are fortunate enough to have a good strong crew chief that speeds up the learning curve.

I would point out that by the time he was "reaching for" the base, he had already been tagged out, with the forced out at the base tag. So, him reaching for and touching/holding the base wouldn't "magically" make him safe. I'm not saying he didn't interfere, just pointing out that the lack of him reaching for and grabbing the base is irrelevant to whether he was safe/out.
@Subangelis2 жыл бұрын
It is relevant to this play though. If he had reached out to the bag and stopped himself, he wouldn't be called on interference, and it wouldn't be a double play.

It. Certainly looks like Contreras was able to touch the bag but elected not to do so. And if he had stayed on the ground instead of popping up, he might have been able to remain on the bag too. If the standard is “able to” then that’s pretty subjective and I disagree but I understand the interpretation since he didn’t actually touch the bag. That said, we have a situation where Contreras didn’t actually make contact with the shortstop and is called for interference and the Toronto player the other night clearly intentionally kicked out his leg to trip the second baseman and is not called for interference. Seems like the opposite result of the rule that was established after the Utley incident.
@ah70273 жыл бұрын
you dont have to physically make contact to be called for interference. His actions forced the shortstop to make evasion actions or risk being taken out. Logically speaking if he hadnt jumped he wouldve been plowed into and possibly injured. So no making contact isnt required to intentionally interfere with a play.
@thomasbroking79433 жыл бұрын

@WhereMyChicken3 жыл бұрын
@@alanhess9306 Have you ever heard of a pitcher intentionally throwing at a batter? It's disguised as a brush back pitch or a pitch that got away. Happens all the time time, but I guess there is room for that, correct? It's all about commitment and making a change in the way the game is governed. Where there is a breakdown teams cannot vote to have an umpire taken off the field. No one has a better idea. In fact, no one has any idea how to stop the nonsense. Plunking is the only way.
@alanhess93063 жыл бұрын
@@WhereMyChicken Why can't you stay on topic? Yes pitchers throw at batters all the time and pitchers are ejected for it, all the time. But what does anything of that have to do with intentionally hitting an umpire? The only thing that is nonsensical is you thinking intentionally plunking an umpire will accomplish anything. Umpires get hit all the time. It is no big deal. It won't change anything about the way umpires call balls and strikes. All it does is adversely affect the catcher's career. He will be ejected, possibly suspended for a few games and fined. Tell me again how this helps his team? It's a very good thing that thugs like you are not involved in sports.

Get out of the way if you don't want to get hit. Batters need to have lighter feet in the box. Fielders made these double plays for decades until MLB decided it was too difficult for them and forced the batters more into the baseline. Why don't people watch anymore? This and the poor pitching is mostly why. Bryant couldn't even feel that HBP with that armor on. The pitchers need to get these guys in the ribs instead of on those armored plates.
@larrymelton55373 жыл бұрын
A hitter that goes the plate with armor all over their lead arm shouldn't get awarded first base on a HBP if the ball hits the armor. I guarantee if they didn't have it on, there would be far fewer HBP's. That pitch is easy to get out of the way of.
