Can anyone explain the pushout rule and why does it exist, and it pros and cons?

after the break, the next person to shoot can play a pushout, which means they can intentionally foul (even pocketing wrong balls). the next shooter has the choice to either shoot, or pass the shot back to the person who pushed. the purpose of the pushout is to give yourself a more favorable shot than what you have, following the break. most players push to a very difficult shot or to a safety shot that they otherwise wouldn't have had. I personally like to push to a jump shot, especially if I know my opponent won't try it.
