Just finished watching this movie. All around a great film. Reminds me of "Letters from Iwo Jima". Its interesting to see the war from the eyes from the Axis. The Royal Italian Army deserves far more recognition and respect then they are give. For they where soilders fighting in the name of King and country and although they where outclassed in arms and equipment. They nevertheless fought with the hearts of warriors and with the determination and duty as soliders. I now the fascist where in charge and realistically Italy had no where near the Industry and resources to fight in this war. Mussolini ambitions and judgment simply where to cloulded with the dreams of the future. For he would dragged his nation into a war that the Italian High Command warnded that Italy (in the middle of a massive rearmanet program mind you) would not be combat ready with modern armaments and equipment until 1945. Instead he would give the command that would condemn thousands of his countrymen and women to there deaths. And bring about the end of the Kingdom of Italy, the Fascist Party and finally his own life.

My English grandfather who fought the Italians and Germans in North Africa often spoke of how he and his men detested Montgomery but has respect for Rommel. He said there was a degree of chivalry in that campaign unlike many others. Despite what the media may say what with the oncoming crisis in the EU, may Britain and Germany stand side by side as brothers.

@Kendo4711 In this battle Italians sacrified themselves to protect ur army . Most of them were captured or died while walking in the desert when infact germans retreated on their vehicles, abandoning their allies in a deathtrap For their sacrifice I would have appreciated a bit of respect from you , rather than the usual irony about Italians

A few months ago I met a 90 year old man, who had fought as a young chap under Rommel in Africa. When I asked him about the Italians, he smiled. "They were good comrades, had good meal. But when we lay in a position and the Thommies attacked us, then the Italians, who lay before us, ran always quite briskly at us past to the rear, although still no retreat was ordered. But so we knew the score and could then already pack together untroubled" ;-))

Yes i've heard of this battle, and i do agree the italians performed admirably there. However there will always be exceptions, especially owing to the fact that the italian soldiers were elite alpine divisions in Nikolayevka. However in North Africa especially and in Europe the vast majority the italians were close to useless (even Rommel said so) because of very poor morale and not wanting to fight. There were always minor exceptions, but in general the italians were not great (2 put it kindly)

And what im saying and continue to say is that not just the italians were seriously underprepared, but the Allies were seriously underprepared as well. They weren't expecting war, and had little armies and got massacred in Europe. Your making it sound like ONLY the Italian army was underprepared, which is just not true. USA only joined the war in 1941, Britain did not prepare for any war, France didnt either and the USSR werent preparing either, only Germany and its allies built up their armies and prepared for total war, so they had a major advantage. Thats why they were winning the war for so much of the war.

I seem to have hurt your pride. Ill just use an example of a typical battle involving Italians in North Africa. Battle of Bardia: The Italian soldiers were holding an extremely fortified position (a fort, in fact) and outnumbered Australian soldiers 3 to 1. There were 40 000 of them. 36 000 of them surrendered, 1000 killed, 4000 wounded. As i said before, this is not a one-off. These sort of defeats happened many times in both world wars. Did you mention something about fighting spirit?

Italy was a naval power. Tanks were useless from an Italian strategic perspective, and until 1941 Italian Tanks were on Par with the British crusaders. After the American started sending equipment and heavier British tanks entered production, Italian Tanks became obsolete. The new models were better but in low numbers due to lack of raw materials and Constant Allied bombing of industrial districts.

For example theyd surrender in their tens of thousands to vastly inferior forces. This happened in both world wars. How can you possibly argue they were good soldiers? In some cases men from different countries are not the same. For example, the native Maoris of New Zealand were considered the best fighters in the world because they are bred for war. They are huge people, and when in their 'rage mode' were immune to pain. They were amazing soldiers without any training.

To put it simply, the Italians in North Africa suffered the exact same conditions and problems as every other army there, but had the worst performance rate. All other armies withstood and performed much better in exactly the same conditions, this means that the average Italian soldier was not as good as the average soldier of any other army, axis or allied. In many cases 2 soldiers were enough to escort 1000's of Italian prisoners; this would never happen with any other soldiers. Sorry :(

The Italians had no morale. Australian soldiers noted how when they passed water around to the POWs, almost always some soldiers would miss out. This never, ever happened with the Australians. They had one of the strongest 'esprit de corps' of any army. We call it mateship, and thats what made the ANZACS such good fighters. The Italians lacked fighting spirit, due to a number of reasons (dislike of officers/Mussolini, poor equipment), and that was why they performed poorly on the battlefield.
@chazzalinko

Well, I disagree with your rosy, naive opinion of war. Your belief that "every one of those men who fought in both World Wars were heroes" is unbelievably wrong. You need to look up the term 'hero' in the thesaurus again. You are basically saying that the SS death squads, who massacred tens of thousands of Jews wherever they went, were heroes. That the Japanese, who massacred and butchered thousands of POWs and civilians were also heroes. Do you realise what you're saying? (continued)

thought the war was going to be unwinnable until the last two years, when Germany started losing. And just because Mussolini didn't care for his men, doesn't mean the Italian generals didn't. They did alot. And btw, all the reasons you gave why the Italians surrendered so much all agree with what im saying; the italians were bad soldiers. You r now even saying it yourself. They had absolutely no morale; and any army that surrenders in its thousands to vastly inferior forces is a bad force.

Yes we did, Japan were a massive powerhouse and took the Allies by surprise. But Japan was a bigger, more powerful country in WW2 than the Austro-Hungarian and Slavs combined by far. They were pathetically weak, and Germany was forced to support them all the time they were so bad (a bit like the Italians in North Africa). Rommel fought against the Italians in WW1 and said they were the worst soldiers he'd ever fought against. And the Australians were the first to defeat Japan in WW2.

Overall, the Italians had no fighting spirit in both world wars, and thats the truth. Yes, there are some fine exceptions where elite, trained Italian units fought very well, but if you look at the overall track record of the common Italian soldier, they were no good. They suffered many, many more defeats than victories. I dont care about the TENTH MAS or the Italian Special Forces, im sure they are great but im talking about the Italian soldiers in the past, not about the ones now.

I know because you are Italian that you are defending them. You ask me why i make such judgements of the Italian soldiers in the world wars. Im not making judgments, im speaking the facts. Yes, there are such things as good soldiers and bad soldiers. Good soldiers make the enemy fight for every inch of ground and dont run away; bad soldiers, even when outnumbering the enemy, run away or surrender. And thats what many many Italians did. The truth is, the Italians generally were poor soldiers.

The British also got beaten badly and surrendered at Singapore despite outnumbering the Japanese 3 to 1.

Its not all about training and equipment, morale and the type of men is everything. A soldier with good morale is a better soldier than the soldier with poor morale, even if he's superbly trained and equipped. The Italians almost never had good morale, and therefore almost never performed on the battlefield. I never said that Italians were bad soldiers because they were born in Italy, but because they had shitty morale. They didnt want to fight. They didnt want to be there. -continued-

It is a poor analyse made over-simplyfing everything (are you American? It would not surprise me...). I think that no soldiers can have good morale or fighting- spirit if they are badly equipped, used wrongly and abandoned by their generals, as happened several times to Italian soldiers. Just try to stay years at the front, eating badly, without artillery or tanks support, fighting against way better equipped and nourished troops. Everything looks simpler behind a computer and on the couch, my dear superficial friend.

Dude, your accusation of racism is so ridiculous it made me laugh. You have absolutely NO idea what racism is. First off, racism is the discrimination of another RACE, not of another country. Thats how you get the word RAC(E)ism. Last time I checked, the Italians are not a different race. Italy is a country. Just because i think the Italian weren't good soldiers back in WW2 doesnt mean i'm a racist. That just doesnt make sense. You are overly defensive and patriotic about your country.

Luigi, Have a look at the overall performance history of the average Italian soldier throughout both world wars. It's not good. Well to be honest, it's actually pretty terrible. There are some fine exceptions, but overall the Italians suffered many, many more defeats than victories, and thats the unfortunate truth.
