Mike, while you are modifying the column for the floor shifter, you should take the ignition and instead of a key, you should change it to a push button :-)

I like your video great technical expertise shown. I've always shot away from electrical if you want to include a steering column in that. I like your approach direct to the point easy going. I like to work bench. Is that chair from the '40s or '50s or what? Reminds me of growing up and my dad's shop I think here we had then was black upholstery same type of office chair. I think still in the back some place. I like how you don't edit the tape please on this one and you said oh I forgot and remove that plastic piece down the bottom and honest and straightforward. Your friend Austin did a good sell job and this is the first video of years I've watched I'm sure watch some more. I encourage others to subscribe like I did. I found the steering column tear down very informative and interesting. That's why I subscribed.

Question for you, Michael: If you go with a floor shift, won't the shifter come with a neutral safety switch designed for the floor shifter? Such a shifter assembly (like a B&M) would save having to worry about adapting the switch and, in theory, make the logistics of the job easier
@SantasWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Good question! I am look at the B&M quicksilver shifter but I have considered using a shifter out of another vehicle and might end up having to use the rod. I most likely will go with the B&M.
@TheOcculus2 жыл бұрын
You can do it the same way GM did with the manual transmission vehicles. The cab harness didn't change between the automatic transmission vehicles and the manual transmission vehicles. The Clutch safety switch had a manual transmission pigtail that plugged into the clutch switch and the dangling Neutral Safety Switch plug. The backup lamps were handled the same way. Three on the tree had the same column switch as the automatics. Otherwise GM had adapter pigtails that plugged into the backup lamp switch plug at the base of the column and ran to the backup lamp switch on the transmission. Assuming B&M or Hurst or ... have the backup lamp and neutral safety switch in the floor mounted shifter you can make up a pigtail. The cab harness plugs at the bottom of the column are Packard 56 female.
@TheOcculus2 жыл бұрын
An interesting piece of trivia that you are no doubt aware of. The harmonica plug on the GM turnsignal switch pigtail is pinned the same from roughly 1978 through at least 1993 in the light trucks and fullsize cars. Quite possibly the mid size cars as well. The ElCamino and Cabellaro is classed as a Light Truck. It's mentioned in several of the CK RV G & P light truck manuals. All four bright filaments in the Turn/Park lamps are on separate terminals in the harmonica plug. This separates the rear bright lamp opposite the flashing turn so it stays lit without flashing and the forward bright filaments don't come on with the brake lamps. GM didn't have to install separate turnsignal bulbs in the rear along with two additional wires running the length of the vehicle. Your tail lamp harness is literally four wires off the bulkhead plug instead of six saving GM the additional copper for the wires and the bulb sockets and the larger lamp housings. The column mounted dimmer and wiper controls don't pass wires through the harmonica plug. The other odd thing you'll notice about the turns is the side markers in the front flash with the turn when the parking lamps are off and flash opposite the turn when the parking lamps are on. GM Electrical Engineers didn't provide a ground to the side markers. The filament power is from Turnsignal hot to Parking lamp hot. This makes the 1157 bulb filaments the circuit to ground til power is applied to both wires making the side marker go dark. Since the polarity of each wire changes you have to use a tungsten filament 168 bulb not regular LED bulbs in this socket. The column mounted dimmer tilt columns are more plentiful. Moving to the column switches is fairly easy ... dimmer (three wires) and the wiper controls (four wires all grounds, Ground HI LO OFF, you bend over and heatshrink the end of the gray instrument panel lamp wire for the dash switch). The delay wiper setup is much easier to come by and install for the column mounted switch. Install the delay switch and control module. Plugs into the same plug as the not delay switch. The additional wires on the delay wiper switch plug are your delay resistors for the pulse box.

Three questions. What is the best way to repair quarter rust for the guy with no experience or money? What is a good brand of rust converter/killer? How much weight can a full frame car with an LT1 tow? No we don't scrap cars with solid frames, good engine, and interior because the body has a little rust.
@SantasWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Question 1 There are many ways to “repair” which is only a temporary fix. The only way to repair rust is to fully cut out the affected area and replace the panels. As far as no experience, by the time your done you will have experience!!! 2 POR 15 is the best I have found so far! 3 Engine size isn’t as important as what the suspension can handle. You should be able to find that info on the door pillar on the drivers side.
@loganlovescarsandmotorcycles2 жыл бұрын
@@SantasWorkshop Thank you. It's a '94 Roadmaster Sedan. I was told it will tow like a truck so I should be able tow tent trailer, small boat, or the motorcycle. Of course that is something I have never done before. As someone fairly ignorant to most things automotive I appreciate any help.

@@SantasWorkshop I am going to have a guy do some metal work on the bed side where the coffin rails might have gone. It looks like the moon there and I suspect someone make have put tonneu cover snaps there at one point. After the metal work, I am going to have him stop, will blast it, lay on some PPG Epoxy primer DP-90, then have him apply filler and sand. It will seal and encapsulate the metal.
