El Camino de Santiago - The Way of St. James - 2014

My first experience on The Way of St. James, in the North of Spain, a trail with various possible routes to reach the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, where the remains of St. James are supposed to be buried.
An ancient way of pilgrimage, nowadays a mixture of tourism, religion, spirituality, sports and culture.
I started on the town of Roncesvalles, on the Pyrenees area, following the French Route, which actually starts on St. Jean Pieds-de-Port (France). I did not start on this latter town because it is more demanding physically (as you have to hike up more than 1000 meters), so I plan to prepare myself better for this in the future.
I managed to walk from Roncesvalles to Puente la Reina in 3 days of hiking/walking. I plan on doing the whole French Route, little by little. during the next years, as long as it is possible for me health and time-money-wise.
This time I did this journey in mid-October, and I was extremely lucky to have a week of sunshine and warm temperatures. The normal weather for this time of the year would have been rain and cold temperatures.
An experience I recommend to anyone who likes to walk in general, though you should also prepare yourself for some areas where you have some up-mountain hiking, which can be harder (though for professional or really experienced hikers these areas should not be difficult).
A beautiful tradition that can lead us to meditate about life, yourself, but also to get to know some of the beauty of both the culture and people of Spain.

Mi primera experiencia en El Camino de Santiago, en el norte de España, una senda con varias rutas posibles para llegar a la catedral de Santiago de Compostela, donde se supone que están enterrados los restos del apóstol Santiago.
Antigua ruta de peregrinaje, hoy en día es una mezcla de turismo, religión, espiritualidad, deporte y cultura.
Empecé en Roncesvalles, situada en los Pirineos, siguiendo el denominado Camino Francés, el cual en realidad empieza en San Juan Pie de Puerto (Francia). No empecé en esta última ciudad porque este tramo exige más preparacón física, ya que hay que ascender más de 1000 metros, así que tengo planeado prepararme mejor para esto en el futuro.
Logré recorrer desde Roncesvalles hasta Puente la Reina en 3 días de caminata/senderismo. Mi intención es hacerme todo el Camino Francés poco a poco durante los próximos años, mientras tenga salud, tiempo y dinero para hacerlo.
Hice este primer tramo a mediados de octubre y tuve la suerte de que durante esa semana hizo sol y calor, cuando lo normal es que hubiera habido lluvia y temperaturas más bajas.
Una experiencia que recomiedo a cualquier persona que le guste caminar en general, aunque también es necesario prepararse para algunos tramos en los que se requiere subir a ciertas alturas elevadas, lo cual puede ser más duro (aunque quienes sean escaladores profesionales o con mucha experiencia no tendrán mucha dificultad en dichos tramos).
Una hermosa tradición que puede llevarnos a meditar sobre la vida, sobre uno mismo, pero también a conocer parte de la belleza tanto de la cultura, como de la gente de España.
