El Cid 1961 English (Part 17)

He was born Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar. Vivar being the town where he was born. It is near Burgos. He was born either in 1040 or 1043. Historians are not sure of the date. He died in Valencia in 1099. His name, "El Cid" was given to him by the Moors. In the mixture of the Spanish and Arabic language they used, they called him "As-Sid" (Lord or Chief). This was pronounced by the Spaniards as "El Cid", but they themselves actually called him "Campeador" (Champion)

@marcdaddy33 Is this because its a less Religious world(for america at least)where this new type of General is most likely atheist.I can't see a religious man leading our modern armies.There is very cold persona to modern commanders.

generals today do not want to lead their men in battle. men should always have a morale boost with their general always in front. we have advanced weaponry and great protection if they shall get shot. generals should always lead in my opinion :)

Generals/officers in Medieval times had to lead from the front for morale. Most of their soldiers were illiterate peasants w/ insufficient military training & needed officers out front or they would be ineffective. Today generals are tacticians/strategists not warriors. They have to coomand & coordinate land, sea & air forces & complex logistics. It would be foolish for a general to lead from the front today as their death would have a greater impact than the loss of just one soldier.
