El Cid 1961 English (Part 16)

He was born Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar. Vivar being the town where he was born. It is near Burgos. He was born either in 1040 or 1043. Historians are not sure of the date. He died in Valencia in 1099. His name, "El Cid" was given to him by the Moors. In the mixture of the Spanish and Arabic language they used, they called him "As-Sid" (Lord or Chief). This was pronounced by the Spaniards as "El Cid", but they themselves actually called him "Campeador" (Champion)

Since I saw EL CID with my Dad that rhythmic drum beat of the Moors marching on Valencia has made a lasting impression on me. Awesome film that should never be remade.

Bin Yusuf said it was a war between his God & the Christian God but in fact both Muslims & Christians believe in the same God, the God of Abraham, and both believe there is only one God. The word Allah is just Arabic for God. The major difference is Muslims don't believe Jesus was the Son of God but a prophet of God & Christians don't believe Mohammed was a prophet of God.

Not exactly. Men like him would have conceived of Christians as idolaters, for worshipping Jesus as a God, and possibly polytheists, because of the concept of the Trinity. Then again, the Almohads and Almavorids thought that Spanish Muslims were evil as well. So the depiction of Ben Yusef as a bit of a nutter is probably quite correct.
