El Cid ending, one of the best parts of this epic road show picture. El Cid taking a arrow to the heart in a previous battle, demands that he rides out the next day despite his fatal injury. Thus restoring the morale of his men and then to charge on to victory. And thus the cid, road out of the gates of history, into legend.

What makes this scene so riveting, is that, according to history, when El Cid was mounted on his horse, he was already dead, from wounds received, in an earlier battle. He was tethered into his saddle so that he would not fall, and his right hand was affixed to his staff, so that it would not drop. This was one of the most dynamic endings, in the history of film.

I wouldn't say "according to history." That episode, and much else in the film, is legendary, as the narrator says. But the visuals and the music are indeed a magnificent expression of the myth.

It’s a great film, and a fantastic ending. But complete Hollywood. El Cid ruled Valencia for many years, wisely and well. Although he was a Christian he was not above accepting payment from Moorish rulers as a mercenary.

@@duicic8541 - I completely agree. He was a fine warrior and many Moors had lived in Spain for decades. The established Moors and Christian’s were very much against the Almohovids, fanatical warriors from North Africa.

No crappy cgi here. All of the sets and backgrounds were real. Real castles, real crowds of hundreds for the battle scenes, real siege engines rolling laboriously forward. They couldn't get enough money to finance a film like this today. This is a film about chivalry, honor, and commitment to a cause, even at the pain of death. Does anyone even care about making a film epitomizing these virtues anymore? And kudos to Miklos Rozsa for a brilliant, unforgettable score.

Only prime Hollywood at its extravagant best could come up with a film and musical score like this. Even Lord of the Rings looks greatly deflated after seeing this film again. This is my Dad's favorite film, and he showed me this film when I was very young (probably younger than 10). The film has changed the way I view cinema, and it is among my favorites. And much of that is because of this scene. It is so moving, so striking, so profound, so epic, I am always moved, by the organ music, by the chorus, by the legend. What a treasure of a film, what an underrated masterpiece.

I´ve always wondered how must Anthon Mann´s face expression have altered when he read the last page of the script and learned that the story ends with the main character winning a battle while being already dead. And it is admirable how well it is solved, the camera keeps exactly the right distance, so far that the - non spanish - public doesn´t know that he is dead but so close that it also realizes that there is something fishy going on. The horse with its nervous tipping provides also the perfect counterpoint to Heston´s rigidity. And the zoom when he crosses the gates...and the charge... wonderful.

I was a scoffing teenager at the time, an American kid lucky enough to be living his first year in Europe, and maybe I still am a scoffing teenager, but I was wowed by this ending. Unbeliever or not I admired the medieval purity of the feeling this scene conveyed. I note that for years I've misremembered the last line. I thought it was "...The most perfect knight of Christendom." I was also wowed by "Ben Hur" which came out at about the same time. In the decades (and dozens of movies, and two tours in the Vietnam War, and the right wing attack on the American people) since 1961 I had plenty of time to get tired of Charlton Heston's swaggering foolishness.

How I love this movie, and I always was crying at the ending, I was a young teenager when I first seen it then, and made a dramatic impact on my life. Ben Hur is my favorite but El CID and the Ten Commandments comes next. Always admired Charlton Heston and his acting abilities, they always were strong and true to his character performances and what he stood for in life. He made a difference in his films. RIP Charles, may you rest in peace in God’s eternal heaven. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😇

When I first saw this scene a memory was triggered in me. I had, from my mother, a sixth grade reading book, with a section titled "Heroes from other lands" I recognized El Cid as being one of those stories when they got to the part about propping him up on his horse with the the bar to keep him upright. This book would have been in use, in Kansas, in the 1940's, so it's pretty cool. There were also short fiction stories set in other countries, particularly Asia, Eastern Europe, and Russia. Quite a breadth of cultural exposure for the time and the place.

Lovely story, Denise. Thanks for sharing that particular memory, speaking as it does to an America within which ordinary normal Americans grew up to learn all about the wider world around them and to savour the different cultural histories. There's something especially poignant about the fact that your Mom was growing up in Kansas in the 1940s because -- all too sadly, as the events at The Capitol on January 6th amply demonstrated -- I've a feeling, Toto, that we're not in Kansas any more. Big thanks again.

George Clooney made some snide, catty remarks about Charlton Heston's support of the NRA, and about Heston personally, when Heston was suffering from Alzheimers. I can assure you of one thing, Clooney could have never played this role, could have never matched Heston's personal character and patriotism, nor equaled Heston's class as a man and as a human being.

@@RedStretchLimo [QUOTE] That last scene was pretty poorly directed, no fault of Hestons'. [UNQUOTE] What a pompous empty-headed remark from someone who as like as not coudn't direct an envelope through a letterbox, still less a film production as epic as this. Though you clearly know nothing at all about cinema, those who do rightly regard Mann's work here as amongst any director's best, from the climactic stripping out from the soundtrack of all audio other than the horse's hooves as the Cid's corpse is prepared for the last battle, right through to the moment when Mann allows Miklos Roza's astonishing score to explode with almost physical impact, the camera taking and holding a low angle against-the-sun shot of Heston as the organ resounds with all stops out. This was not the age of digital processing so it wasn't possible, as it is now, to process that entire down-to-and-through-the-gate sequence in CGI post-production (as would've been the case in 'Game of Thrones.') The light was pretty much uncontrollable and Heston's horse increasingly camera-shy despite the best efforts of the wranglers (if you knew anything at all about film editing you'd realise that Mann deliberately lets us have a quick glimpse of actor John Fraser reaching out spontaneously and unscripted to gentle the animal just as the cavalcade is completing its eerily quiet passage down the ramp to the outer gate). Some purists might reckon that to be a mistake, but Robert Lawerence, who edited the film, was one of the best in the business, and he and Mann together agreed to let the unintended view of Fraser's gesture stay in the final cut, a nod and a wink toothers who know the art and craft of film-making that hey, guys, this bit was real tricksy. Mann's work is amongst the finest of any Hollywood practitioner and the widest-ranging; 'El Cid' is a 100% gold-plated triumph which in its closing has Mann (father of famous 'Heat' director Michael) anticipating the future genius of Sergio Leone, arguably the greatest director of them all (folks who're genuinely interested should note this closing El Cid sequence to see how mastery of what's heard is actually as important as mastery of what's seen, and then if possible go view the first 12 minutes of Leone's matchless 'Once Upon A Time In The West'. Contrary to your glib unsubstantiated assertion, 'El Cid' is arguably the finest Hollywood epic ever made. In a role that he was born for, Heston was never, ever better: strong, noble, iconic, and credible.

Why someone feels it necessary to sour the atmosphere with an irrelevant attack on George Clooney is mystifying. As for saying that Clooney "could never have matched Heston's peronal character and patriotism": what on earth is that supposed to mean? You alleging that Clooney is a Putin agent? Heston, like that other wonderful icon of Hollywood's golden days, was fallible. Wayne, who I adored, was daft enough to be honest enough about his pure blind patriotism: watch 'Green Berets' if you want to see patriotism at its most ill-judged. Heston was, it seems, hewn from the same rock fault: an actor who never seemed to realise that it wasn't his name that the grubby National Rifle Association of America wanted, but his. . . nobility. That was the misjudgment on which Clooney was calling him out. In his later years, Chuck possibly realised his mistake, but by then this generous-of-heart actor was in the public perception trapped in the persona of a noble, patriotic warrior. No matter which way he turned -- and in his later years, he sadly had little strength left to turn anywhere -- he was never going to escape that persona nor stop being the NRA's dupe. There's no shame to attach to Clooney. But plenty to attach to the NRA.

@@martyconroy3786 absolutely agree. But I think there is a point perhaps to be made that the Kingdom of Heaven protagonists seem very modern in their outlooks. A generation or two past it was probably easier to have the religious or premodern attitude. I think it is hard for writers and actors to really get themselves out of a 21st century attitude.

"El CID" FILMED IN SPAIN at the famous Spanish coastal town of Peniscola, with its huge Moorish era "Castle on the beach". (Roughly halfway between Tarragona & Valencia). A genuine fishing village when filmed in 1961, but sadly the film resulted in wall to wall tourist Hotels within just a few years. Which destroyed this little towns medieaval flavour, so now it looks more like Miami Beach in Florida USA today !!!
