Few people know that the cid was one of the few warriors in history who won a battle while dead; shortly after his death his men placed his corpse on his horse on the outskirts of Valencia so that the Arabs would believe that he was alive. It worked. Even after his death his image was enough to demoralize the enemy troops. The campeador!

Freedom ALBA GU BRATH Scotland where in Spain did You get those teachings? 😳😳 It's not mainstream AT ALL. He was maybe bad-tempered as portrayed not in the Cantar (where "mesura", prudence seems to be his main feature) but in other songs. One of them says:"cosas tenedes Cid que faram fablar las piedras, pues por cualquier niñería faceis campaña a la Iglesia", I do love that quote (you 've got things (traits) , Cid, that will make stones speak, because you fight the Church For any childishness). Being bad-tempered is one thing, and being a schizophrenic is other very different. Maybe your lecturer at that university was the real schizo or pshyco 😂😂😂

Thank you so much for this! I first met El Cid Campeador during the summer between fifth and sixth grade, in 1953. I read Chanson del Mio Cid and my imagination was on fire for months. Now, thanks to these two videos, I am once more THERE. I am eleven again, on campaign with Rodrigo Dìaz de Bivar . . .I am an old woman now, but I rode a destrier along through the yellow haze of dust, beside mio Cid, while I watched these!

Well, remember that Don Rodrigo is the cultural hero of Spain, King Arthur made flesh. And the Spanish are a romantic people, ever willing to overlook the human flaws in heroes. This isn't a bad thing, but it does make a historian's job a Hell of a lot harder than it needs to be. For a more realistic interpretation of el Cid, you have to go to Church records and what little survives of Moorish records.

It changed when my great great great grandpa traveled to here from Spain. His last name was de Vivar, he was taken in by some people here and his last name became Cortinas. Not as cool as de Vivar, but he met a Karankawan Indian here in Texas and they started a life in the King Ranch, I’m also related to the person who founded the town I live in of Raymondville Texas. There is a further Spanish myth about El Cid, I can’t remember if it was in Valencia or some other place. But shortly after his death the Moors were more courageous since as he was the only one who stopped them. So on the next attack on Valencia the moors were about to defeat the Christian. Someone (probably Jimena) decide to put El Cid on a horse tie the sword to his hand and tie a stick to keep him straight and have him charge at the moors. According to legend this was such a sight that it broke the moor army

You should do a profile of William Marshall, Apparently he took the Cross and fought in the holy lands for 2 years but not much is known about his time there, but never the less he was reported to have been be the Best Knight in Europe in the 12th Century

Elisabeth Chadwick authored two historical novels on William Marshall. She used history and filled in the blanks. Since there was little to go on regarding the holy land she did little as well. She also wrote an epilogue that helped sort the history from her fiction. Godfrey Bouillon has a claim as well but he was from about a century earlier so it's easier to share the title.

Side note. I created El Cid in our current DND campaign. I adjusted his life story some what in terms of dates and people El Cid interacted with to match with the Water Deep Heist campaign.

I deffinitely think he'd be kindred spirits with the likes of the dehautevilles, would've lived to see him meet william iron arm, robert guiscard, and Roger of Sicily. It would've been interesting for sure.

I watched El Cid for the first time a couple nights ago. Now I learn about him. Truly one of the greatest knights Ive ever heard of. Maybe THE greatest. He did great for Christendom and for his people. He's a real hero.

Actually, that is not a Hollywood invention. It comes right out of the bardic epic "Cancìon dè Mìo Cid". I memorized it age 11, and I can still quote it: "Saddle next my Babiéca, arm him well for the fight; on his back tie my body, in my well-known armor dight. In my right hand place Tizòna, lead me forth into the war; bear my standard fast behind me, as it was my wont of yore." What that meant to me, at age 11, was that El Cid was such a mighty champion that, even dead, he could win battles by appearing on the field because the mere sight of him would drive his enemies before him.

@Faustonauta
@Faustonauta 10 ай бұрын
@@zaprese Obviously Arthur does not look real, but what we thinks we know about el CID is more legend that reallity. Maybe Arthur didn't exist or was the interpretation of several warriors of his era (turned into a single character that we identify as King Arthur). We know that Rodrigo Díaz was for real, but what we don't really know is if that Rodrigo (the one we discuss here) was for real. I guess that the same happens with other legendary characters, mythic or real ones.
