As an American, i have been surprised by the history of Spain and Portugal. In a strange way, it actually makes a lot more sense, and has a unifying narrative easier to follow than American or British history. It is bloody, brutal, full of treachery (like all human history unfortunately), but it is also very beautiful.

Thank you for posting the crusades against the Moors on the Iberian Peninsula. The most popular military orders during the Middle Ages were the Hospitallers, Templars and the Teutonic Knights. Nobody ever talks about the Knights of Alcantara, Calatrava, Montesa and Santiago. These crusader knights have been fighting in their own backyard for hundreds of years but most people have never heard of them. The Knights of Santiago rode into battle screaming,”Santiago Matamoros!”, which means Saint James the Moor slayer. The Spanish Conquistadors yelled the same battle cry when they conquered the Aztecs and Incas. As a matter of fact, there’s a city in Mexico that’s named Matamoros. The Middle Ages was a very interesting time if you’re interested in religious wars. Religious wars during the Renaissance period were quite interesting too. For example, the Siege of Vienna 1529 and the Battle of Lepanto 1571. I’m a Mexican American and I like the history of Native Mexicans. However, I’m also interested in the history of the Iberian crusaders, as I have Iberian blood too. Thank you for the interesting documentaries. One more thing, can you do a documentary about Saint Ignatius of Loyal? He was a Basque Spanish soldier who became a Catholic missionary and founded the Jesuits. The Jesuits were responsible for aggressively converting Asians to Christianity during the 16th Century.

Michael Knight little know fact, after the recpnquista was done, "swej"(read backwards due to yt censorship) were kicked out because many cities were taken by moors with the aid of the " tribe" who lived within the walls. In fact when moors left a conquered city to continue north in their invasion, many times it was "swej" left in charge as a payback for their service.

Ever heard of Fragging in the military? A disgruntled soldier, or group of soldiers work together and throw a live frag gernade in their commanding officer's tent. Pretty sure Sancho was killed in such a manner, Medieval style, seeing as the killer was never found.

I think you should do a video/s about first journeys and Christian missions of Europeans to the Far East - travels of Benedict of Poland, John da Pian del Carpine, William of Rubruck, John of Montecorvino, Odoric of Pordenone etc. It's part of the Middle Ages that is often overlooked.

I think I've said this before, but the idea of splitting up a kingdom between ones sons makes some sense, as then the wars break out and the strongest wins and gets it all often quickly then can go on to do even more with it. If the king just gave it all to one son that one may be incompetent, and lose everything to the moors.

I've actually heard that argued. Fernando I knew civil war was inevitable among his sons, so he made the division to ensure that the war ended quickly and the victor could control everything. That is basically what happened. It seems likely that a king as competent as Fernando would definitely have understood the reality of the situation and would have prepared accordingly.

i wonder if average people in late XI Century Spain knew about William The Conqueror invading England a few years before, or the Pope trying to assemble an army to Crusade to the Middle East, i've been wondering , how average joes knew or found out about things that went on far away from their village or town, or they just never knew about these things?

@@kanyekubrick5391 by the 11th Century is highly likely people didnt see difference between Visigothic or Hispano Roman, im sure noble families knew ,because they kept records , thats how we know their family trees til this day, but commoners , or lesser nobility didnt keep track of their ancestors, so im very sure the average peasant didnt know if he or she had Visigothic or Hispano Roman ancestry, they all saw themselves as Cristians and Iberians.
