Martinez, John Patrick P GCAS 13 PH-LIT Sunday - 7:30-10:30 am Group 2 Jose Rizal, a famous person from the Philippines, wrote a book called El Filibusterismo. It came out in 1891 in a place called Ghent, Belgium. This book is the second one he wrote, following another called Noli Me Tángere. Some people also call it The Reign of Greed. Rizal wrote these books in Spanish because, at that time, the Philippines were under Spanish rule. He wanted the Philippines to have more freedom from Spain. These books talk about issues like bad behavior by religious leaders, racism against Filipino people, and the need for political change. Because of these books, Rizal had to leave his country and eventually got killed in 1896 when he was just 35. In the Philippines, students in high school have to read both of Rizal's novels. They've been translated into English, Filipino, and other Filipino languages.

Libunao Brix P. GCAS 13 PH-LIT Sunday - 7:30-10:30 am Group 2 El Filibusterismo was written by the unofficial national hero of the Philippines, José Rizal, and first published in 1891 in Ghent, Belgium. It is Rizal’s second novel and the sequel to his first novel, Noli Me Tángere. The novel’s alternate title is The Reign of Greed. Rizal wrote both novels in Spanish because at the time of writing, the Philippine islands were Spanish colonies. His two novels were a part of the Filipino Propaganda Movement, which sought greater autonomy from Spain, if not independence. El Filibusterismo addresses topics of great importance to the movement, namely clerical abuses, racism against the Philippine people, and the need for political reform. The novels resulted in Rizal’s exile to Hong Kong, and later, his execution by firing squad in 1896 at the age of 35. His two novels are required reading for all Philippine high school students, having been translated to English, Filipino, and other Philippine languages.

Sampaga, Jeshiree N. GCAS 13 PH LIT SUNDAY 7:30-10:30AM Group 2 "El Filibusterismo" is the sequel to Jose Rizal's famous novel "Noli Me Tangere." Set in the late 19th century Philippines, it continues the story of the protagonist, Crisostomo Ibarra, who returns as the wealthy and mysterious jeweler Simoun. Driven by his desire for revenge against the oppressive Spanish colonial regime and the friars who caused his beloved Maria Clara's death, Simoun plots to incite a revolution. Through his intricate schemes and manipulations, he exposes the corruption and injustices rampant in society, ultimately leading to tragic consequences. Rizal's "El Filibusterismo" is a powerful portrayal of the social, political, and religious issues plaguing Philippine society under Spanish rule. Through vivid characters and intense plotlines, Rizal critiques the abuses of power and calls for reforms. The novel's themes of oppression, resistance, and the consequences of violence resonate with readers, making it a timeless classic in Philippine literature and a symbol of the country's struggle for independence.

Romay, Angel Joy M. GCAS 13 PH LIT SUNDAY/ 7:30-10:30am GROUP #2 In "El Filibusterismo," the protagonist, Simoun, is actually Crisostomo Ibarra from the prequel, "Noli Me Tangere." After escaping from soldiers, he becomes wealthy in Cuba and returns to the Philippines as Simoun, a friend of the governor general. While outwardly supporting Spain, he secretly plots revenge by inciting a revolution and rescuing his love, Maria Clara, from a nunnery. Simoun's plan to start a rebellion fails when he learns of Maria Clara's death. Later, he devises a deadly scheme involving a lamp at a wedding, intending to kill government officials. Isagani, learning of the plot, saves the guests by throwing the lamp into a river. Simoun, wounded and desperate, seeks refuge with Padre Florentino but is eventually cornered by authorities. Rather than face arrest, he takes poison. In his final moments, he confesses his true identity and intentions to Padre Florentino, who offers him forgiveness. Simoun dies peacefully, and Padre Florentino disposes of his treasure chest, symbolizing closure and acceptance of God's will.
