Follow along as we try and help El Mero Mero keep her wheels on the ground a little more. Craig Sullivan’s 49 mercury ProMod built by Larry Jeffers has a little bit of an issue carrying the front end. We’re going to see if we can help keep the front and down in this car hauling ass like it’s been doing!!!

Another great video! They say if you can't make something work, talk to a nitro guy 😂😂😂😂! This may sound really stupid, Because most builders do headers similar & I know the pipes are tight together, But wouldn't it be better to put the pipe supports under the pipes & maybe run a rod or a strap in between each for the connection? Basically so your holding the weight from the bottom, instead of pulling on the top of the thin pipe? I'm probably overlooking the reason why they don't! I'm use to collector headers & turbo piping. Not Zoomies. I do understand the lay back & angles, using all the exhaust pressure to help the car! It looks like what you did with the new pipes, really helped! That time slip is awesome, running within 1 hundredth of Stevie, who has every state of the art car, parts, & equipment, is just badass! Thanks again Mr. Rob!

Nice job! Just like the chassis job you did with the thicker tubing and the brackets that go around it so the fuel tank doesn't bind. Great job. What a dream job!

Awesome Build ! Saw it in person at The World Street Nationals in Orlando, truly a work of art. You can tell Craig is very proud of the Merc - great guy too.

I know relatively little about mechanics, but my first thought was to change the exit angle of the headers. Point them upwards to change the force leaving them. Nice to see physics in action.

We had a couple sets of headers for the fuel car..(decades ahead of any rules on angles) and found out just how big a difference it made on down force.. When dressed as a "AA/FA" after we went with laid back zoomies 50's to 40s? I had to add a couple degrees to the front canard and still keep the wheels planted.. Down force was no secret.. guess it just took time to turn it into an issue with NHRA.... Good looking ProMod... I think I would rather play Promod than fuel....

Using the angle as thrust worked well for Jimmy Prock when he tuned for DSR...didn't take long for NHRA to implement rule changes. Also noticed that was Jay Cox instead of Stevie Jackson in the right lane. Great content, thanks for sharing.

Awesome video, as usual! I love the tech explanations! Any idea how or if exhaust exit angles affect lower powered cars? I imagine it would be a game of diminishing returns, but I’m curious if anyone has experience with when it stops making any difference.

You know I am at a loss as to why more racers don't take advantage of the free thrust provided by the exhaust off the engine. Especially the ones with forced induction, which I suppose is everyone nowadays. It should be obvious to anyone with half a spoon of common sense, and mechanical ability to see that. If anyone has ever been around the cars when they're rolling on the throttle, you can feel the air pressure before it even hits you. Are watched a drag race at night, and watched the exhaust blazing out of the pipes, are better yet. Been to a chassis dyno session where the pipes are shooting either straight up, or straight out the side. Because everything around the exhaust if it's not tied down blows away violently. If it can blow the insulation off the bottom of the metal roof 12 to 20 feet above it. Then what more evidence does it take to prove to these people to use it to their advantage. Like a turbo makes free power, so does the exhaust leaving the turbine at the speed of sound. Appreciate your sharing your knowledge with folks, not many have enough confidence in themselves to do that, because they're afraid someone will use it to beat them. All your doing is making it more fun and competitive in my mind.
