El origen del dogo argentino está bien documentado, ya que es una raza bastante nueva.
El Dr. Antonio Nores Martínez, el fundador de la raza, desarrolló el primer estándar en 1928.
Martínez cruzó deliberadamente perros de pelea con perros tipo dogo. Los dogos habían llegado al continente sudamericano con los españoles durante el descubrimiento de América.
Su objetivo era claro: conseguir un perro todoterreno.
Quería criar un perro de caza extraordinario que también fuera un buen perro de compañía y guardián.
