The Roast has a team of writers for those who aren't professional comedians, and that includes the roastee. And usually the non-comedians play safe telling the jokes those writers tell them to say. Because, when they don't, you get gems like the Ann Coulter segment in the Rob Lowe roast. Of course, even when you get your lines fed, you still need to have good comedic timing to not fumble the joke. And Hulk killed it with his delivery, even when some jokes were not for his taste
