1st Question: The sentence never specified how much contestants they interviewed so you can't assume the interviewed the top 3 as it is not stated, so B and D should be eliminated. Now you are left with B and C. B is not specific enough. Contestants of what? What do you mean by well? The text is looking for "who did the best" so B is eliminated. Now you are left with C.

Totally. I think they are implying that "top three" is a more precise way of saying "some people who did the best". Yes, "some" does not exactly equal "three", but it can be argued that saying three doesn't change our perception of the sentence since "three" and "some" are compatible. I would say C is a good answer, but it seems just as precise as the prompt, not more.
