I just ordered a set. Andrew Jones did honest, serious engineering here. Far superior to similar priced Klipsch and Polk audio...which have poor crossovers. Transparency, detail, imaging...WIN. Not to mention, the speaker show proof it can scale better than others. (Better gear, better sound).

Hi Jay!, first thanks for all your work producing content for this channel you guys are doing an awesome job. I have a question regarding the sub and speaker integration, you mention a high pass filter, does that mean you are cutting off the lowest frequencies for the main speakers to relieve them of having to produce those frequencies and so elevate their performance? I’ve heard of this done but have not seen much content on high pass filters or how to set it up. Thanks!

For those with AVRs: the only thing the "4 ohm" setting does is reduce voltage to the amplifiers to prevent overheating and pass certification (4 ohm speakers will draw more current from your amps). It just means the amps won't melt and burn your house down, but it will limit your power.

Nicely done! Looking forward to trying mine with REL subs n the future. I bought the bookshelf’s 4 a bedroom system & the floorstanders n a larger set-up. I agree with your observation about using with a tube amp. I use a Mystere PA11. The bedroom uses the newer PS Audio Sprout. The Elacs have a very mature sound, why spend more?

Great vid. I have b&w speakers and wondered your thoughts on driver sizes. I have a center b&w from 15 yrs ago with a 7 inch vs a new center with two 5 inch drivers. Seems that the 2 inch diff is making a diff in sound. R the newer models with smaller sizes comparable or better than older larger sizes?

The Douk ST-01 Pro with tube preamp and around 45 clean WPC is a great amp to drive Elac DBR62 Reference speakers at a low proce. After two years breaking in, they play down to 30 htz, filling the room with bass that you can feel sitting on the couch, 8' from the speakers. I can feel the bass at 28 htz. The amp is a class D with tube preamp, claiming 200 watts max. I'm not using a sub for now. I can hear the tubes "wake up" the speakers even at lower volumes. My setup is not standard, so other rooms may yield other results. Dimensions may help explain why my setup sounds balanced. Room is 13' deep, 12' wide. Speaker placement; Left, 50" from back wall, 20" from left wall. Right; 16" from back wall, 28" from right wall. Both speakers tilted up 5 degrees, cross streamed 10 degrees toed in, on speaker stands ear level. A 7' couch is parallel to speakers and TV. Sources are; IBM I5 PC, DVD, CD, Smartphones on WLAN, and Sony Bravia Smart Inet TV, copper connections. Being older I only hear to about 17 khz, but still know what a real cymbal sounds like. Elacs sound real to me. Power plus tubes helps all speakers sound better. Elac Reference likes some power. They sound great to me, better than my B&W's at 5x the cost. Pretty=pricy, not better. Walnut Elacs look fine to me. Thank you Andrew Jones, and thanks for this honest review.

One of the big cabinet improvements of this speaker over the DB6.2 and DB5.2 is those speakers having a round port that is quite close to the woofer. So the tweeter and the port being close to the woofer opening, that makes both the narrow sections of the front baffle, make it fairly weak, and it is prone to resonance. The slot port removes the lower weak point. *Hopefully* there is a brace at the upper weak point.

I got a low-power integrated that’s pretty conservative in the treble spectrum. More so, the treble (and the bass, for that matter) pot does only -6dB to +6dB and sometimes those +6 is just not enough. I only hear certain hi-frequency sounds because I know they’re there, but they just don’t “pop”. The mids and bass are spot-on, no complains there. As I have no intention to replace my Rotel integrated, would these bookshelves improve the sound in the treble department? Any opinion would be most welcome, thanks!

@@sdrtcacgnrjrc hello! wow... a long time has gone by! i bought the Uni-fi UB5 which i still have. they are absolutely phenomenal speakers IF and only IF you have the power to make them sing. Currently they are being powered by a Cambridge Audio CXA81 and they sound sublime! way way better than with the IOTA. I also should mention I thought about replacing the Elacs with a pair of Revel Concerta2 M16 and a pair of Elac Carinas (both models considerably more expensive than the Elacs Uni-fi). well... I ended returning the Revel Concerta and re-selling the Elac carinas. The Elac Uni-fi are a way more honest speaker; beautiful wide soundstage, refined sound really. Revels, too bass boomy and the Carinas were great with transient attack, but too dry, fast decay for my taste, robbing them depth. good luck with your search!

@Jayiyagi 4 жыл бұрын
I think the price difference is definitely justified. Even just based off the looks alone...
@Purpleyamz
@Purpleyamz 3 жыл бұрын
For me, coming from the 6.2's, it was absolutely worth it (although I found a used pair on ebay for $450). It was actually more of a difference than I thought it would be, considering the drivers are the same etc. To me it's like a totally different speaker - warmer, smoother, more refined, more bass. It's a little bit more laid back the the 6.2's which are forward in the mid/vocal range. Vocals may seem a little more recessed with the DBR62s, but I kind of like that as the overall presentation is smoother and natural.
@Purpleyamz
@Purpleyamz 4 жыл бұрын
Nice review. For those that have heard these and the 6.2's, I'm wondering if these have more or deeper perceived bass output. I like the 6.2's, but they always seemed a but thin/lean to me.
@swiftraider759
@swiftraider759 4 жыл бұрын
I just bought the DBR62 and they surprise me more and more each day based on the music I play. Based on previous videos I tested these bass tracks per Jay's experience as follows. Bass: night train christian McBride Bass: flight of the cosmic hippo flecstones Also by bela fleck Bass : limit to your love james blake Bass : Hot Spade oh Joon Sung I have a JTR HT118 sub for movies that goes down to 11Hz. Edge of Tomorrow opening scene. 😖 Anyway these speakers with a fairly decent to strong amplifier will reward you. I have a unison research unico hybrid amp. Solid state for power and the preamp is tube. It goes over 100 watts easily at 6 or 4 ohms. With out a sub mind you these speakers somehow pressurized my room with bass. And my room is not small. My living room is an open floor plan leading to the dining room and kitchen. The bass was pretty unbelievable at mid to high volume levels. The review was spot on in regard to higher components bringing the potential of these speakers out. I'm sure these speakers do with a variety of amps, but just keep in mind they may have another level with quality amps or integrated amps. I'm now in search for a Dac in the $300] to $600 range. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Have an eye on the bluesound node 2i. Ray Charles, Tonny Bennet and Frank Sinatra sounded so natural when listening. I was streaming through Tidal Hifi. Will be looking to DSD and MQA soon.

@@swiftraider759 I finally got the DBR62s and agree with most of what you said. To answer my original question, yes these DBR62s have noticeably stronger perceived bass output than the 6.2's and an overall fuller and warmer voicing. They sound equally good with my 125wpc modern class D amp and my 10 wpc (yes 10wpc!) vintage Pioneer. Excellent all-round speakers with a very refined yet muscular sound. Buttery smooth yet never veiled.

Hi Brad maybe I can help you alittle. My friend and I both bought the reference series he has the bookshelves and I have the floor stands. The midways and highs are identical. The floor stands have way more base because they are a three-way design it has two small 1 inch ports at the back of the speaker as well as a slotted port in the front. We try them in a room size 12 feet wide and 24 feet long .The floor stands sounded much more fuller In the room at the same sound level as the bookshelf speakers' so if you want more base and have a big room I would recommend the floor stands. Hope that helps you.

I gotta say that you entirely miss the point. Everyone has different preferences. I often find myself buying the wrong product because my tastes don't align with the reviewer's. The danger with online shopping is that you can't try the products before purchasing. So buying the right set is a journey of buying stuff you later regret until you're content with what you have. Even if Klipsch, Triangle and ELAC always seem to get the hype these days, they're very distinct from one another. So choosing a winner is subjective. And there are definitely other options that you'll overlook as reviewers are not sponsored to talk about them. I mean, isn't it suspicious that most audio review channels talk about the same products? Think about that...

I think Focal Chora 806 will blow away pretty much anything in that price range for resolution and broader sweet spot. Hi !! If Audiolab pairing is better, do you think 6000A being just 50W/C, was it able to drive DBR 62 being 86dB, Imp being 6 Ohms ?

Great video dude! ... Hey, I'm having a hard time finding somebody to compare these new Elacs to the older UniFi series. (I realize the UniFi's are 3-way, but the price-points are confusing)... Any thoughts? ... Anybody?
@Mark198d
@Mark198d 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that the price points are confusing. I had the Uni-fi UB5 before, but not heard these new Debut Reference yet. JoeNTell did a review recently and put the new Debut Reference ahead of the UB5 on his speaker leaderboard, though he said it was close. padlet.com/joentell/leaderboard

The UB 5 is getting old. It needs a rear port and a better woofer. I think Jones will upgrade the UB5 very soon.

Surprisingly an old Pioneer SA5200 I have, at 10 watts per channel, drives these wonderfully. I guess power ratings may have been different in the 70's? I was afraid it would be way underpowered but it's just not - it sounds great, solid bass response, lively sound.

Yes, like the Pioneers designed by Jones, the high end is rather dull. At age 71, I have to crank the treble. Otherwise, a well-balanced sound.

What’s the ideal listening point of the speakers? I have mine about 8ft apart. Is that too close or too far?
@slofty
@slofty 3 жыл бұрын
As long as you're 8-12ft away it'll be fine. Any closer is going to chop up the phantom center, in which case-- move them closer together correspondingly.

@slofty
@slofty 3 жыл бұрын
@@BOBBY1976100 That's typical of a well-designed loudspeaker-- it's accurately reproducing the music as it was mixed/mastered. What you're hearing in vocals that "image" like that is typically due to saturation, a beloved technique in the studio that purposely adds harmonic distortion for presence, among other things. Try cranking Brubeck's "Take Five." It's one of my favorites on a good pair of 'shelves. That was recorded with two mics, one behind Joe and the other near Dave. Wonderful dynamics for its age. You should forget the speakers are there. Bliss!

So I got it set up and listened for a bit. First impression is that it matches the bookshelves well. It does not go quite as low as them though, but close. Voices seem slightly better. Probably due to having two 5 1/4” drivers instead of a single 6”. I definitely recommend.

Vinyl centered front end, use streaming for non critical listening. The BR03s are great especially supported by subs. Wondering whether the comete ez will take performance to a yet higher level as it is very similar except for a supposedly higher res tweeter.
