Not looking rich doesn't mean you have to look poor. You can purchase good quality items that you need, will use and value and take good care of for a long time. I don't want to look poor. I want to look like I've made sensible financial choices, nothing ostentatious or to show off to anyone.

My wife and I married young at 22 and 23. We had almost nothing to our name and we both worked low earning jobs. However, we were extremely frugal. We had no tv, no phone (it was 1997), no car, no mortgage, no debt. We lived in a crappy flat on the fourth floor without a lift (elevator for the Americans), but which was within walking distance of places we needed to get to. In those days I literally walked everywhere, up to 4 hours a day. We cooked our own meals, eating lots of cheap vegetables, potatoes, rice and beans. Our entertainment was reading novels (borrowed from the public library, of course) or playing cards in the evening. Little by little, we started earning more. Then we started having babies. We never went out, our holidays were camping in a tent. We always spent less than we earned. We managed to buy a small house that we paid off in 4 years, sold that at a massive profit, then moved into a bigger one, paid that off in 6 years. Now we have 3 houses, loads of investments in different accounts, and live very comfortably. The key is to start small, always spend less than you earn, and invest in stuff that goes up in value. If you do this, over time you will become rich.

That’s outstanding how you did it! The problem is in the USA at least the schools do not teach any kind of financial education and they have been promoting socialism for decades. It’s common sense what you said but few people want to live that way because they are lazy and entitled. They want it all now. And then the trouble begins.

I travel to Asia often and I dress as the locals do - flip flops, shorts, T-shirt, & hat. Even tho I stand out as the big white guy with round eyes - I feel "accepted" by most as I am not trying to show off in their country. My Asian friends always laugh when I walk out of the airport as I have no checked luggage even when staying a month or two. Just a carry-on and my drone backpack. I onow how to do laundry and it makes travel so much easier to not drag all the extra stuff around.

Depends where are you travelling. There is a ton of places where you can look "smart" and still be safe. I would say - look normal, but attractive. You can wear very stylish good quality clothes that are a little bit dated as you wear them a lot. They can look great on you but not scream "money".

It's the same "up north" where I live. When we bought our house ~20 years ago (fully paid off as of about 8 years ago) I was talking to the loan officer and they agreed that most everybody that came in wanted to get as much house as they could and so many of them were one paycheck away from disaster. Yeah, house prices rise. But around here not as quickly as other parts of the country. And we did have a regional recession here awhile back and there were a lot of people that lost their McMansions.

Well, maybe you are wrong about them? When it comes to a financial sense, brick and mortal banks are thieves. Why would they put too much into the banks that literally pay .0002% in return when they can use your bank to pay bills and have an online saving accounts or funds somewhere that pretty safe and pay at least 4%?. We have multiple banks and funds just because we don't trust a specific bank.

I wanted a Gucci wallet so badly. Finally, when I sold my house a few years ago, I bought a Gucci wallet. It was the only thing I bought. (The rest went onto the loan of the new house, paid off my truck and went into the bank as an emergency fund). It's recommended to save at least 15% of your income in a 401k. You can use online calculators to estimate how much you should save based on your age and income. Saving at least 15% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of compound interest and potentially grow your retirement savings over time.

About 6 months later he told me he was through with those clothes as now his friends told him he was no longer in style. He said he was getting an LL Bean catalog and changing to all classic casual clothes. He is now in his 50's, retired, still wears T-shirts and jeans, can afford whatever he wants, has a beautiful paid-for home and car, a wife and 2 children. They can travel and came to see me (long trip) for a week. They all had backpacks, wore jeans and T's and each had a pair of sneakers, no other shoes with them. I'm tired of it, people got mad and pissed off with me because I stopped bending over backwards for them. I wish I had your insight at your age, I was so naive.......better late than never. The problem with this statement is that often health issues cause a lower income, not the other way around. My husband was and is a healthy weight and gets plenty of exercise. He was raised vegetarian in a similar way to what they do in Loma Linda (where the life expectancy is higher, look it up). No "recreational" drugs, alcohol or smoking ever. At 41 he still almost died from a sudden cardiac arrest due to a genetic condition. He now has a brain injury, and we are grateful that he can still work, but it limits his earning potential. We are doing fine because we live frugally,, not because we are lucky enough to have zero health issues. It's incredibly judgmental to assume that people don't have money because they are unhealthy. There are a ton of variables to all of this. Healthy people die all the time.

All good points when you’re talking about young single people. When you’re raising a family, rich can show up even if you’re purchasing “poor.” It’s not about cars, clothes, homes, etc. Rich shows in school choice, extracurriculars, tutoring, nannies, cleaners, etc. None of those things are about being flashy but about quality of life for your family. Wealth is not just about avoiding risk but about making the life of your family and community better.

totally agree with this. I am come from a culture that looking rich is vulgar and it also encourages burglarling and muggers. I am in a rich area in the Uk but I am very low key. I don't have a car, or kids and expensive jewellery. People think I am poor as i go round by bicycle, but I save a lot of money and it gives me exercise. My neighbours waste money buying large houses, buying houses in conservation areas where it is very expensive to make changes, and large fines if you get it wrong, they have lots of kids, have to buy cars for their kids, and spend money on private schools. Mean while my mother has property assets but lives really simple with an old car. Both of us have not been robbed. In other parts of the Uk people are buying expensive cars and they are constantly having their cars stolen. same with mobile phones people are walking around with expensive phones in front of strangers and being mugged all the time. crims know what they are looking for. dress poor but no so poor people will contantly follow you in supermarkets

At a certain point, people won't be impressed anymore because they'll expect you to always have nice things. It's better to acquire the necessities first, then work on building passive income streams with your extra income. I will splurge from time to time on vacations or meals with the family. But my neighbors will never see me pull up in a $100k SUV. I'd rather just blend in and enjoy being worry-free.

This is probably one of the most honest, and truly important life advice videos young people should see. I'd say this video should be mandatory school education material. There's a reason most lottery winners become poor within just a few years, for the same reason newly rich don't know how to handle money. I often say to myself when I see people that flaunt wealth, look - real poor people. Because no one with assets in their right mind would show it off like that, hey watch - come and rob me, I'm a sucker! An ex-con once told me what he always looked for, and that was a home with a pretty clean well kept lawn and yard. They always skipped the grandma lawns, you know - overgrown, because they assume people in there doesn't have any valuables. I see collecting assets like a scoreboard in a video game, and you don't need to flaunt your high-score with others, be happy for what you got, squeeze on everything, be stingy on subscriptions, always go for the bargains, shop-second hand, and you will live a super comfortable lifestyle AND still have enough to be safe when that rainy day comes.

Parents happily paid for his education because he's the favorite child (don't act like parents don't have favorites). He lucked out and got paid $60K right out of high school. Parents praised him and have shamed me for not making a livable wage at 30 years of age. 2024. I'm secretly getting ready to launch my business, have an emergency fund saved up that they don't know about, will be attending HVAC class next month. My ultimate goal this year is to combine a blue collar skillset with my tech skills because getting a tech job right now is no fun. Meanwhile, my younger brother just had to voluntarily repo his luxury car and financed another luxury car and will be taking two cruise vacations this year. It is better to have money in your pockets than to have a bunch of fancy things! Money in your pocket allows you to do whatever you want whenever you want to! That my friend is the best feeling in the world! To do this takes one of two things. Make more money or cut expenses! Which one is easier and uses less energy? I learned to cut expenses and this is when you learn to look modest and poor! Stay wise my friend!

Absolutely loved the video! It's refreshing to see content that challenges the conventional pursuit of material wealth and highlights the substantial benefits of living modestly. The emphasis on using money as a tool for growth rather than mere survival, and the critical look at how societal perceptions can influence our financial decisions, definitely resonated with me. Plus, the notion that true wealth and freedom come from financial independence and peace, rather than the accumulation of material possessions, is a great message. Thank you for sharing such insightful content! 😊

it depends on your career. for example, if you're a high end Brand model/endorser/celebrity/fashionist of course you need to look rich. Actually, it is required. it's just one of their investments.

Absolutely spot on about the pitfalls of equating wealth with flashy displays! 👏 Wealth often thrives in simplicity and discretion, allowing for true financial freedom and the space to make more calculated, impactful financial decisions.

Exceptional valuable advice! I learned this years ago, when self-development wasn't so trendy, from a wealthy guy who said this all the time. Moreover, when other people see/believe you are rich/er than they are, apart from envy will appear a lot of bombs: they ask for loans, they act differently and the friendships are blown away.

I thought about it for a long time. Save, save, save , grow money and then what die and go away…. Finally gave in and bought a luxury vehicle after toiling for 20+ years. Sometimes looking rich is also needed. If a billionaire drives a beat up Honda, people call him modest, but if normal (rich multi millionaire and not a well known billionaire) is quiet and drives around in a Honda then people call him “cheap”…. Once you build your assets and complete your responsibilities, it’s ok to get luxury things if you enjoy them!

I’m looking more at HVAC, plumbing, foundation, landscaping, etc. - and the utilities! I’m with you - live well below your means (and it can be done quite comfortably - the key is to avoid the beginning of Evil…) and, long-term, Bob’s your Uncle and Financial Peace can be yours (it is ours). Great vids!

Your long-winded description of success can be much-shortened to my feelings on the matter. There is a huge difference between "standard of living" and "quality of life". Once you understand that, your success is guaranteed.

I remember my father criticizing my clothes even though it still looks good and comfortable. Yeah, it is not fancy but whatever. He still doesn't stop and keeps talking trash on me. And since I won't budge he just told me that I will die at 40 years old which is 3 years from now lol. I would have it other way if he could bring it down to a much lower number. It's his fault that I'm living in this world in the first place, as if I asked to be born lol. He just can't accept the fact that he has so much money many years ago and with his over luxurious lifestyle, his money dwindles. While I can still live a modest life in simplicity even though he abandoned us and not receiving support.

A well put together video. I will say your video is about being modest than looking poor. Also each industry or sector in which people work often influence their outlook. The most important thing is don’t try to impress anyone, buy what you can afford and ensure everything you own serves a purpose.

While I was in the Air Force, I drove my used Nissan Sentra for my entire 20-year career. Many people kept making fun of me because I was an officer and I should have been driving a new car...an expensive new car. Now I'm retired and living in Jamaica. Those who had jokes about my car are still working and knee-deep in the rat race.

True to a point. But in certain situations I wear a well fitted suit. No not expensive. Off the Rack at a great price but most importantly tailored superbly. Sometimes you just have to get the respect of certain people and that's one way of doing it. Some people get uncomfortable and that's a Good Thang Believe me

I was mistaken for homeless once by a homeless guy. LOL I was riding my bicycle near the beach where I owned a home in cash and a homeless guy was asking me if the shelter was full last night. LOL I really don't care what people think about me. I do have to wear a suit and tie to certain events and get a lot of head turns from attractive women. But I'm not interested in being with someone that is attracted to clothing or other shows of power/wealth/status.

Rich people tend to keep their money. One thing I heard often whenever I'd complement a mentor or one of my parents' friends on their house or property, they would almost universally answer with "Thanks, but it wasn't always like this." You have to build wealth, not squander it.

I would have driven my 2004 Corolla for 200,000 more miles if the bottom hadn’t rotted out. But having a paid off car for 14 years allowed me to pay cash for a newer vehicle. Doesn’t get the gas mileage and I’m sure it will cost me but I could live in it if needed.

You have a good point. If you don't look rich people are less likely to have people trying to "borrow" money. You are less likely to be the target of a mugger or a Certified Financial Predator, sorry Certified Financial Planner, but was I right the first time. Ben Franklin and Cornelius Vanderbilt lived in nice houses but they were not opulent. That flashley Biltmore mansion near Asheville, NC was done by Cornelius' children, who went broke. Half the billboards in my town seems to be personal injury lawyers. Read the book, "The Millionaire Next Door." "I drink two types of beer, free and on sale." said one such millionaire.

Yes to everything you say. There are a few things one might purchase that we associate with being rich, however, that might actually be good investments: a Mercedes will hold its value over time better than a Buick; a Rolex has more re-sale value than a Timex, a Tiffany charm bracelet won't depreciate like a Pandora charm bracelet. You also might enjoy the more expensive item as it's often better made and/or more enjoyable to use. I think what's most important is 1) to live within your means, and 2) not play the comparison game with others. Excellent video as always, Austin!

Agreed on Rolex, or a piece of art 🖼️ holding value/ but you are 100 % wrong 😑 about Mercedes or BMW - they decrease in value as any other brand- check cargurus and you will see the reality/ here in Florida you see car dealers selling tons of them for a bang
