Gloria Ascher - Ladino

Gloria Ascher, who was raised by Ladino-speaking parents in the Bronx, talks during a visit to New York about her abiding affection for her native borough and its Ladino-speaking history, her subsequent career, and her pioneering work creating the first substantially enrolled, long lasting college-level courses in Ladino in the United States, at Tufts University. She also shares an original song.
In Ladino with subtitles in Ladino and English by Kaela Alince Fong and Jalitza Gutierrez, with corrections by GA.

La charla de esta señora se sigue entendiendo perfectamente en España. Algo muy sorprendente, teniendo en cuenta que llevan cinco siglos fuera de España. Por muchas palabras que hayan incorporado del turco o el hebreo, es significativo que ella no definiera su lengua como ladino, judeo-español o algo así, sino como el "español de nosotros".

Dejame contarte una historia. Cuando fui a España en el año 2000. Cuando llegué a Toledo, la ciudad estaba llena de gente, porque allí estaba el rey de España. Luego quise visitar la catedral católica, pero no pude. Entonces decidí buscar las ruinas de Sigoga, las cuales por suerte encontré y quedé muy conmovido por todo lo que allí vi. Fue como si hubiera encontrado mi pasado.

What a treasure to listen to! I wonder if our families ever crossed paths. My grandfather's parents were born in Istanbul - one was Sephardic and the other Ashkenazi (family originally from Ukraine). He grew up between Upper Manhattan, Westchester and the Bronx (Kingsbridge Heights, not too far from the Grand Concourse).

Me da la impresión que le entiendo más y mejor que a otros ladinos. Incluso, diría que algunos términos y pronunciación es idéntica a como se pronuncia el español moderno. Pienso que puede ser por dos posibles causas: porque era profesora de judeo-español en la universidad y por lo tanto lo tenía que practicar mucho, a diferencia de los sefarditas que se quedaron en Turquía, que casi no lo usaban; la otra posible causa, es por el contacto que puede tener con tantos millones de hispanoparlantes de Nueva York de origen Puertorriqueño o mexicanos. No lo sé. ¿Alguien lo sabe?

Buen punto, interesante y posible que sea el caso. Con la diáspora se conservó la lengua castellana del siglo XV y quizás el contacto con los hispanoamericanos tenga alguna influencia. Nuestro español conservó igualmente muchas palabras de la época de la Conquista.

Her first language is English, that's why. The English and Portuguese accents sound similar whenever speakers from those two languages try to speak Spanish. Russian speakers also sound like the Portuguese when they speak Spanish, funnily enough.

@@bilbohob7179 I mean, i thought it was ridiculous at first too. But take for example, this guy above me that confused an English accent with a Portuguese one, lol. And after thinking about it for a bit. It came to me that if you take away the peculiar pronunciations of the "t" and "r" that English speakers have and the strange way in which they pronounce the "o" vowel. That i think it would make these two accents sound very similar. Not as similar as the Russian and Portuguese ones. But kind of close.

It's not just because of her accent. Ladino in general has sounds that are often more like Portuguese than modern Spanish. Some because of direct influence from Portuguese (many Portuguese Jews went to the Ottoman Empire), but even more because Ladino preserved "Portuguese-like" sounds that used to exist in Castilian, but disappeared. For example, you have the "z" sound in the Ladino word "kaza" (casa), the "v" sound in the word "avlar" (hablar), the "j" sound in "jardin" (which is pronounced like the "j" in French or Portuguese, but not like in modern Spanish), etc.

@@cuidatrava1 He's not talking about the phonetics but the accent. And she very clearly has a slight but noticeable English accent. Native Ladino speakers tend to have the accents of the native language of the country that they reside in or they sound like Latin American Spanish speakers. Ladino very clearly doesn't sound like Portuguese.
