This song is basically a modern Hey Jude. It does the same 3 verse/3 bridge thing before hitting you with the repetitive chorus refrain. You can even sing "Na na na nanana nanana... hey Jude" over it because it's the same melody

This song is fairly ubiquitous in the UK. It even featured in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics

This song always goes down well in large crowds because they are great performers and get everybody involved. They played the Olympics and lots of other outdoor sports competitions.

Elbow are a wonderful band, Starlings, Mirrorball, Lonliness of a tower crane driver or Weather to fly Live at The Royal Albert Hall with full orchestra are all great, Guy Garvey has a Sunday Radio show on BBC 6 Music too, a top man he is.

You get the feeling he's one of those who has to find something negative. The compression's too much, for God's sake. This is one of the great songs and that's all you can come up with.

Ohhhhh, it's THAT song! 😄 Took me a moment to remember where I'd heard it before, after the first few bars with that violin melody sounded very, very familiar to me: The Corrs from Ireland had done a live cover of this a few years ago, and it also was the first version I'd heard of this song. Nice one! 😊
@Katehowe30102 жыл бұрын
The lead singer's favourite band is Talk Talk. He considers their last two albums to be as important as the moon landings. I don't like Elbow, but Guy Garvey knows what's what?

Cool! 😃👍 Even though it's TT's 'The Colour Of Spring' I regard as their most important (to me) album 😊 By the way, the first time I'd heard this here Elbow song was a cover version by The Corrs, a few years ago 😁

Thanks both, I saw Elbow live supporting U2 and they were note-perfect. For another review try "Grounds for divorce" off the same album.

The live version of this is mixed better. I think it's performed at the big room at Abbey Road. Much more dynamics and feeling. Also if you look at the lyrics you will gain a better appreciation.

There are quite a few songs I class as 'joyful' (Walking on Sunshine, Mister Blue Sky, Mmm-Bop), but it's quite another thing to make a song that is powerful in the sense of empowerment or motivation. This song definitely has that quality; you can almost feel yourself standing straighter and prouder as it reaches the final chorus stage. If you fancy that kind of tune, John Denver is one of the best artists to go for: check out 'The Eagle and the Hawk' for a prime example.

I think Mr. Hanier may be confused. This is not a heavily compressed album, quite the contrary. It is noted that this album contains very soft passages as well as loud ones (dynamics) like a classical recording which typically has no compression. It has a Turn Me Up certification due to its lack of compression. It sounds like a live concert out of the box.

I think I'd go against general consensus here and say that after their first two albums Elbow are 'ok'. Asleep in the Back (their debut) is their best album imo and from that Powder Blue & Red are my personal favs. gotta say though, for a band you might consider 'quiet' on record they don't half make a brilliant racket live!

and if you want more Northern England plus orchestra, please check out History by The Verve.
