This won the Ivor Novello which is an award in the UK given for outstanding song writing. Guy Garvey (the lead singer) had a line from the song tucked away for years and was waiting for the right moment. Guess this was it.

This song was utterly destroyed when it was used at the end of the 2012 Olympics. Beforehand it was a beautiful indi disco song; it made almost everyone who heard it feel joy. Now it's a cliche inspirational song on a reality show. It stopped being a song to give power to a misunderstood generation it became a backdrop of that bit on a talent show. Thank the gods we still have Uncertain Smile, the first time I hear that on an advert heads will roll.

Guy Garvey does a fantastic music show on Sky TV where he goes back through TV history finding live performances that may have only aired once at the time the show went out. He has found some real gems, it's called : Guy Garvey From The Vaults. He comes across as such a nice bloke and so knowledgable about music that if you asked him to step in one day to help review a track on your channel, he probably would.

Greg here. Snooks is the song that initially uncoververd Elbow for me. Heard the song in a movie...think it was Dare. And I was like, gotta find out about that song and band. And then did a surface dive on them...this was like 2-3 years ago. So, many of the songs being requested in this thread are ones I know. All that said...Mirrorball...that's the one I keep going to when I need my Elbow fix and have time for just that one song. LOVE it. And will have Chris react to that.

Another great review! As mentioned in a previous post, seen elbow a number of times live, and to be 'part' of this track at a gig is truly amazing! Guy gets the entire audience singing in harmony at the end. Anyone, search out some gig footage of this on youtube and witness this yourself 👍

I loved Elbow since their first album and theynever seemed to catch a break. They were just about ready to give it up when they recorded this album (The Seldom Seen Kid) which was huge for them. I do wonder if they might be considered a little 'quirky' for some tastes. They're definitely not 'just another rock band.'

They have toured the states on al lot of mini tours. They rely on word of mouth to spread word of their music. Due to lack of sales they almost gave up, back in about 2000. Luckily they carried on and their next album had the hits Grounds For Divorce and One Day Like This. They won the Mercury music prize for that album. You should check out their live performance from Glastonbury 2008. I don't know how many fans were there, but it must have been more than 50,000. To hear them singing (the fans) One Day Like This is so heart warming and uplifting. It was a perfect time of day, just before sunset. never to be forgotten. If you watch any live gigs you will always hear the crowd singing on most of the songs. Guy encourages them to loin in. It's easy to fall in line, with melodies and words that are enthralling. Thee is a hardcore of American fans and they always play to full houses. They are one of those bands - once a fan, always a fan.

You might start to understand why Mancunian’s (people coming from the Manchester area of the UK) feel so lucky to have had access to the number of brilliant bands from this area . Try 'Friends of Our', great laid back composition by Elbow, or for a great guitar riff, 'Love is the Law' by the Seahorses featuring John Squire, post the Stone Roses. For an extremely clever track, try 'FEAR' BY Ian Brown, ex lead singer of the Stone Roses.

Yes, talk more about elbow. Great songwriting and musicianship and given such emotion with guy Garvey's vocals. I actually don't love every song by then but every album has at least a few absolute gems. The awesome and dynamic "Loneliness of a tower crane driver" (The bbc/abbey road sessions are great for this BTW) The beautiful imagery of great Expectations The playful Lippy Kids The relatability of Scattered black and whites The nightmare of McGreggor And then there's mirrorball, dear friends, Jesus is a Rochdale girl, open arms, newborn (with 4 mins of building crescendo), switching off, my sad captains, and many more Awesome. I also second anyone saying Doves - there goes the fear would be a good starting point.

I always compare this song to Hey Jude. The way it builds up three times, and you can even sing "Na Na Na Na-Na-Na-Na, Na-Na-Na-Na, Hey Jude" over the end refrain

There was an English comedian called Toe Knee Hand cock. U.K people should know the song/saying .Tony Hancock "The Blood Donor" After the doctor has taken a blood sample Hancock blithely assumes that that is all that is needed and prepares to depart. When the doctor tells him it was only a smear ("It may only be a smear to you, but it’s life and death to some poor wretch!") and that he must donate a pint of blood, he protests, "I don't mind giving a reasonable amount, but a pint! That's very nearly an armful!" The doctor finally persuades Hancock to donate the full pint by telling him he has a rare blood type, which appeals to Hancock's snobbery. Having boasted of his lack of squeamishness, he faints while giving blood. Recuperating afterwards, Hancock has a chat about blood with a fellow patient (Lloyd), but since neither of them knows very much about blood the conversation is not very informative. As he prepares to leave Hancock is horrified to discover that the other patient has stolen his wine gums. ("If you can't trust a blood donor, who can you trust?") After returning home, Hancock cuts himself on a bread knife and is rushed back to the same hospital, where he receives a transfusion of his own blood-the only pint the hospital has of his rare blood type.

But.. why to react to a video not directly related to the artist?? If you should react and comment about the music and the Rea latino with the video, it should be either with the official video for that song (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zn-ph2uafdeNj68), or to the band performing it (actually a good one is right at the 2012 Olympic Games, since they were there, as one of the most important British bands of these days; there’s another even better, performing at the Abbey Road Studios, but sadly there are other songs by Elbow from that presentation, but sadly the video for this song is not uploaded anymore), but not from a video somebody edited just because. 🤔

Answer: getting through vs getting blocked. Will always err on the side of former and why will always lean away from official versions. So, what it comes down to is picking the best alternative version. An evolving learning process as I go forward.
