Elbphilharmonie | Alexander Arai-Swale plays »Fury« by Rebecca Saunders

A special work calls for a special venue: we recorded the young New Zealand double bass player Alexander Arai-Swale performing »Fury« by Rebecca Saunders in an old industrial warehouse just outside Berlin. »Fury« is a profoundly complex work that poses particular challenges for both instrumentalist and instrument. You need a five-string double bass, with the deepest string tuned five semitones deeper - the frequency of 23 Hz is only just within the range of human hearing.

It kind of feels like an orchestra of double bass. Wonderfully expressive. I have been having a wonderful time tonight going through the pieces of Rebecca Saunders on U tube. I am really glad I have so many more to look forward to and the ones I have heard I know I will go deeper into next time. This is always true of really good composers.

Fand da irgendwie keine richtige melodie drinn - aber sehr beeindruckend und düster fühlt es sich an. Es tönt wie ein "kampf" in musikform für mich
