Supranuclear adrenergic fibers that inhibit the Edinger-Westphal nucleus are necessary for iris sphincter relaxation and pupil dilation. When this inhibitory pathway is disrupted, parasympathetic neurons of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus that naturally fire at a high rate can lead to sustained pupil contraction by the iris sphincter and cause miosis in AR pupils (Miller NR, et al. Amaurotic pupil pupil in an eye that is blind because of ocular or optic nerve disease; this pupil will not contract to light except when the normal fellow eye is stimulated with light. The near reflex is intact in both eyes if the normal fellow eye is stimulated with near object (blurred image).

Pons contains tracts of descending fibers that carry information from the brain to the spinal (including sympathetic fibers) so the sympathetic fibers that dilate the pupil are affected in pontine hemorrhage so the pupil will constrict. (that is to say; the efferent sympathetic (usually causing pupillary dilatation) are interrupted, but the parasympathetic fibers are unaffected).
