In August, the Alpindustria company invited me to film trail running. And I decided to climb Elbrus in one go and ski down from there.
How was the acclimatization? On the first day, I dropped off at the Garabashi station and walked to the end of the Pastukhov rocks. It was already sunset, and I decided to go near the bottom. The snow was already covered with an ice crust, but it was still soft. I went there on kamus.
On the second day of acclimatization, I already decided to climb up to the snowcat, 4950 meters, it seems. I climbed up on the skates without any difficulties, held the skates well, sometimes I just rolled down because of the wet snow. The descent was amazing. The ski held up well on wet spring snow. I thoroughly enjoyed this descent.
The next day I took a day of rest, I thought that I would go to the top for an assault, but the forecast was for bad weather. So I took an extra day of rest. And one went out to storm at 9 pm. I didn't use the snowcat. At first I walked on kamus, but after some time it stopped holding me because the slope was all icy. He put on the crampons, secured the skis to the backpack and went upstairs.
I reached the oblique shelf without incident, but on the oblique a thunderstorm overtook me, lightning flashed right in front of me. He waited out the storm, of course, took off everything metal, lay in the hole he dug, and moved on. Many groups turned around, although the storm had already passed. It’s good that I was alone and there was no one to turn me around.
I was on the top of Elbrus at 7 hours plus or minus. I quickly took the skin off my ski, asked my friend guide Alina to take a picture with her phone, turned on the camera and went down.
I got a direct shot from the very top, the snow was good, hard, but even, there was a little firn at the “take-off”, this was also not a problem. I rode the saddle on fresh snow, there was cold “powder” on the slanting shelf and I got a dose of buzz. Well, from 5000 there was already spring sour snow like in Krasnaya Polyana in the spring. I also went down without any problems. My legs were a little tired, but it wasn't critical.
Conclusion: of course, such an adventure is not for everyone, and I just work as a freeride guide in Krasnaya Polyana, and I was on five thousand in Nepal in April. And the form was good. I do not recommend repeating this without the necessary preparation. But I enjoyed both the ascent and the descent. I was a little shaken by the thunderstorm, but didn’t turn off the road, which I’m proud of.
