I do NOT agree with various things, I'm from Panama. You can eat very cheap at any "Fonda" you have to ask the locals. Supermarket is way less expensive than eating out, the cheapest supermarkets are "machetazo" and "xtra", but super 99 and Rey are ok. You should stay near a subway if you don't want to spend a lot in a hotel right in the city and still get to the center for very cheap and very fast.

I spent a week in Panama last month. Despite it being the rainy season I loved it. Always carry an umbrella for rain and also protection from the sun. Comparing Panama prices to Mexico is not an equal comparison despite exchage rates. People need to realize Panama is the most expensive country in Central America. It is also the safest but like anywhere you need to be aware of your surroundings. We went to the Panama canal museum and the history was interesting. Also saw a Picasso exhibit in Casco Viejo. Enjoyed walking around the different areas of the city. The fish market to Casco Viejo and the downtown areas. Took a ferry ride to Taboga and enjoyed the ride and explring the island. Everyone I met throughout our trip was nice and helpful. At night we stayed in and enjoyed making dinner in our VRBO home. It may have cost a bit more than a hotel but had su h a wonderful view and was very peaceful and a long day. One thing I wish I knew before going was more Spinish. I knew enough to get by but would have liced to understand more if what the locals were telling me. Beautiful country that definitely takes more than a week to explore. I hope to prend a month next time I go. I enjoyed your video and watch many people's videos to get different perspectives. It did help us plan better but now I keep seeing things I missed.

I live now 4 years in Panama. I got stranded in the pandemic and just decided to stay. I can do it because I am an old guy. Always worked hard to earn my money. So I go spending it differently than most people. How much can I get for $1? On top, I check what the monthly income of a worker is in the country. I am originally from Germany. Now my toothpaste comparison (my friends can not hear it anymore 😅) : 75ml Colgate is in Germany around €1 - In Canada, what was my home for 14 years, the same, on sale for 0.99CAD. Compare it to the even cross income of 3,000 a month in both countries. Now in Panama. The same toothpaste amount cost you in the supermarkets $4! On sale sometimes $3. The cross income is $650 a months. Explain that please. 😮
@ms.jacques Жыл бұрын
Everything is kinda expensive but as panamanians we manage to make those 650 last.
@holgermessner851 Жыл бұрын
@@ms.jacques Hello. I do know that. But that wasn’t the point. The economic base knowledge does teach us, that prices get reflected from the statistics of the countries cross income. If in Germany or Canada the toothpaste would be $4 - that would be kinda ok. But people would not buy it. $4 in Panama - there is something wrong. But this is my opinion.
@RedroomStudios Жыл бұрын
@@holgermessner851 probably because the toothpaste is made in the US and has to be imported. its the same reason why electronics are very expensive in Mexico despite the income levels being lower. you are thinking too hard about this. just accept it and adjust your life to live with the realities you find. another good example I can think of is Turks and Caicos Islands... they advertise that there are no taxes there to entice people to vacation and move there. the thing they dont tell you is there is a 35% import duty on everything that comes into the country... which is basically everything other than the local beer because they are islands. it was the most expensive place I have ever visited and yet much of the population lives near or below the poverty level.
@holgermessner851 Жыл бұрын
@@RedroomStudios Well. I don’t speak a lot of Spanish. So I watched locals shopping. They do not buy toothpaste in the supermarkets. They buy toothpaste in the local “dollar stores”. A funny story. “Get it in the dollar store…” What do we none locals do? We take our cellphones and search Dollarstore. It came up in no time. Dollarstore Florida, 1,708 miles…. ! I drove the streets up and down. No sign. We got out of the car and started asking. People pointed in all directions. I got nuts - until we figured out: All the small stores in the street are so called Dollar stores. Go and figure that out. So the toothpaste is $1.25 in the “dollar stores “. - And the big supermarket chains take advantage of people who don’t pay attention to prices. 150ml Colgate is around $4.80… 2x 75ml is on sale each $1.29. So it is cheaper to buy 2 smaller packages. My girlfriend, Colombiana, lives around 18 years in Panama and she always took the 150ml. When I explained it to her: “You see what I mean? They took all the years my money. They all corrupt in Panama!” ;-) When I didn’t worked in Canada and had time to browse the supermarkets in Alberta, I figured out that it was cheaper to shop from Monday to Wednesday. In the night to Thursday, the businesses changed the price tags on the shelves. Thursday to Sundays, it was best to stay away. I explained that to friends and neighbors. It saves some dollars over a month if you know how this supermarkets work.

The last time I visited Panama, I survived two weeks with around USD 500. This is the minimum the government requires tourists to go over there. I stayed in an Airbnb as well and had a good experience (I stayed on the Av Ricardo J Alfaro, also known as the Tumba Muerto). It was less than most of the hotels I found in the city. I cooked a lot and bought most of my groceries in El Machetazo. I think they have the lowest prices in Panama, but I'm unsure. I would purchase straightforward ingredients, so I didn't eat super luxurious. Still, it is an option if you want to save money. I recommend splurging on the food where possible because Panama has a lot of variety, but at the time, I wasn't there to try new food or anything like that. In various parts of Panama City and Colon, small buffet-style restaurants will serve you a good plate for around $5, with a drink included. I would typically get water, but in some places, they have juices, Coke, etc. There is one in San Miguelito close to the metro station and a cafeteria in the Los Andes Mall in Panama City. I don't know how many are in the center or the more wealthy parts of the country. I would avoid eating in Multiplaza, Alta Plaza, or Costa del Este because they charge higher prices. Many Panamanians I met told me they think $10 for a plate of food is expensive. I always took public transit everywhere, including other parts of the country like Colon. I would only take Uber, Indriver, and Didi at night for safety reasons. In terms of security, the thing that you need to know about Panama is that it is one of the most unequal countries in the world (it is in the top 5). So, you have millionaires that live like kings in the financial center of Panama City, but you also have a lot of slums. It's very important that you research the areas you will visit because it is possible that one block in Panama is safe, but the one next to it is filled with crime. Wherever I'm at, I always have my personal belongings in my underwear, I wear my backpack in front, and I distrust most people I come across on the streets. I have felt relatively safe in Panama City but very unsafe in Colon. I would only go to Colon to the Tax-Free Zone (unless you have a local guide that can show you around) because many Panamanians have told me horror stories about what happens over there. I speak Spanish fluently, which helps a lot in getting reasonable prices. Having contacts is a plus, but if you need connections, you can get a lot of helpful information about the country if you speak Spanish. The only issue is that their Spanish is kind of "weird." Even though I have problems understanding it and have said it most of my life if you can speak English, deduce some of their slang. For example, cuara is quarter, focop is f'd up, fren is friend, etc. I hope the information helps. In general, I like going to Panama. It is a beautiful country with a lot to offer!

Your money can go very far in Panama if you’re not looking for the same food you’d purchase in America. Mall food court meals, wings and pizza is absolutely going to be close to US price.REAL PANAMANIAN food(which was not shown in this video) is not comparable in price as US cuisine. Groceries can be pricey again if you’re purchasing the same exact brands as US, due to being imported. Aside of all the cost of prepared or groceries are a fraction of the price. The perfect country for each person is the one where they feel happy and develop their potential to the fullest. Panama is not perfect, nor is the USA, Mexico or Costa Rica.

I dont know about that... it adds up. I'm here for a month and it's going to cost me about $6000 if include my flights.

I agree with your methodology. I told a friend this and he said that he researched and had an air b&b prices around 60 dollars and up and got a great hotel for 40 dollars in town.
@Jaericlynn3 ай бұрын
I have found several airbnbs that are very nice and cost much less than a hotel. That hotel you showed looks equivalent to a US Motel 6. I was lost on comparing currency to Mexico. You're not in Mexico.

Thank you for giving your opinions! However...anyone can say that hotels cost less than Airbnbs, but I just checked on some condo bnbs that were $425-$525 a month. I see nothing comparable in a local hotel. You give no evidence for any of your statements, why not? PLUS they have lots of reviews, unlike most hotels. As for the food, you compare things to NY prices, which means zip to those of us who live in better, less expensive states/countries.

Sorry but this is not a realistic view of Panama. You are talking abt Airbnb but obviously in Hotel Principe. Also, you are in El Cangrejo which is NOT the real Panamá. It's a pass through to the real Pty. Go see El Chorrilo. Way to much mis-info here
@allyons59707 ай бұрын
Yes, but at the same time places like el Cangrejo are where most of the tourists will be. Don't expect the regular tourist to be hanging out in El Chorrillo, or anywhere beyond the banking area and its surrounding neighborhoods. More 'real Panama City' places have their kind of tourists.

Everybody in the comments trying to be nice to you. I'm not trying to be rude but you sound pessimistic. That's a beautiful country with lots of things to do. and EVERY country has its bad places. You need to go back when you're in a better mood. Ok, so here's my take. Great video. No hate here but.... Why go to PANAMA and ONLY talk about AMERICAN food? smh. For example - When people visit MEXICO they talk about eating MEXICAN food or the Mexican experience. Yes, Panama uses the U.S. dollar as the currency. That's the only currency, except for some coins. However, EVERYTHING in PANAMA is wayyyyy cheaper than in the U.S. Sound to me as if you did not get the whole experience. Everyone else who makes videos about my native country says otherwise. So I think you need to go back and experience Panama and stop looking for familiarity. I mean... Chinese American food (LOL).

The Panamanian Balboa doesn't really exist. The US dollar is the only currency.
