@Engadget Back in 2000, a friend of mine, who's so much into Cisco and is a Cisco professional at the time, said - "Microsoft's server business will be gone in 5 years. It's gonna be all Cisco from here moving forward." Me, I'm a Microsoft guy by profession, analyzed what he said and go, "Why? Coz you're a Cisco guy? Where would the web pages be deployed? We have file servers, print servers, all kinds of servers. How do you propose to replace those? Cisco is for networks while MS is for servers. Apples and oranges." It's 2024 now, 24 yrs since he said that MS should ditch the server business. And Engadget is saying MS should ditch the Xbox console business. Why? You think just bcoz you're a content provider you have the same data and analyses MS have? You think you're in the same game MS is in? You think just bcoz MS is now being cross platform they're gonna rely on the competition's hardware to deploy their games thru whatever medium? @Engadget, I say you're utterly 100% wrong on this one just like my Cisco friend. You just deliver content, but you guys don't know anything. BTW, I'm an avid daily Engadget reader, and I don't like this stupid analysis about Xbox.

Microsoft is it's own worst enemy.

It seems like in the world wide sense (not just the Americas) consumers and the media would love for Microsoft to just exit the console wars. Forget the important of competition, as it seems like our biases doesn't really care for that ideal. Clearly the future of the video game consoles market that people really want is essentially what the PC market currently is.

If Microsoft needs to grow pass they need to put the entire Activision Blizzard Catalog on gamepass including COD and WoW. Plus they need to offer yearly payment options instead of monthly option since people use it for a month to play some specific games and then cancel it once they are done.

Having sold only half the consoles to sony is still very far from exit numbers. Being a mega publisher of games and game subscriptions puts them in a unique position to flip these numbers with the next console generation by offering way better deals and cheap accessible game pass with more games than anyone else. If they can pull it off is a different question. But they definitely aren't going anywhere.

I definitely think they could ditch hardware. It certainly speaks to their history too. While Sony is a hardware company and does a better job at it. I do however think consoles in the future would be worse off without the battle between Microsoft and Sony (Nintendo do their own thing).

I like watching this every week and I respect your opinions. But you spent a few minutes ranting about xbox story, then basically ommitted the playstation pc story. Seems bias and/or bad script.

Simple answer no. PlayStation would dominate and that would be the worst thing to happen to gaming. Zero competition and can set the price of games and consoles to whatever they want because people have no choice.
@AlbertPatrick

Isn't that what's already happening anyway? Thanks to consumers choice on where their money goes, PlayStation is already dominating, and Xbox is barely considered "competition" anymore. Xbox is essentially the PC-Engine/TG-16 to the SNES and Genesis. Sony's actual competition is its own struggles to make even more money.

@@AlbertPatrickwell that's a load of crap but whatever. So what your saying because xbox has less players they cant exist?? They both have millions of players and really to alot of xbox players don't consider PlayStation competition anymore with the rubbish they put out, all the cinematic rubbish. The best actual game they have done recently is helldivers 2 the rest is rubbish one and done games.

@@ads401- While I consider Xbox having a more fun variety of games to play than the cinematic 3rd person heavy PS5, the numbers unfortunately don't lie. There are simply many more people that are on PlayStation and Nintendo, despite the fact Xbox is a better value IMHO. The world wide consumers and developers determine the market with their support and money, and it's not really going towards Xbox as much as you would hope it did. For the international regions outside of the Americas, the Xbox is more or less a non-factor.

It's only a matter of time until Microsoft exits the console business. They are getting absolutely destroyed.

Microsoft can stay in the console business by pivoting on what their next console is. My ideal scenario for them is to just make the next Xbox a legit gaming PC, since video game consoles are essentially just customized gaming PCs. They should make it so that we can actually install Steam on Xbox, and then you can get the best of everything which includes the PC PlayStation games. If they release just another "regular" Xbox, then consumers will once again treat it like the 3rd place runner-up like normal. If they try to go the handheld gaming PC route, then they'll still fail against Nintendo, and won't be able to brag about being the most powerful game console anymore.

They definitely should exit the console business. In a climate crisis, why have a system where quite a lot of people are buying two boxes that do basically the same thing? Under capitalism it’s maybe not ideal to make Sony dominant. But in the future, a new economic system would alleviate that.
