Not sure if it’s already mentioned in the comments, but when you cast Barricade with L2, you can quickly press and hold L1 during the cast to keep your shield up uninterrupted during and after the cast. So Barricade can essentially become an empowered full block.

Ya I’ve also noticed that while using it, the animation also allows a block without even needing to press L1, it’s very good ability manly for the convenience and how even while doing an animation ur still able to parry.

From testing, I got the following results (at 115.0 Discovery): -Noble's Slender Sword: 0.25% drop rate - 400 kills/120 minutes -Noble's Estoc: 1.25% drop rate - 400 kills/120 minutes Best farming spot -in my opinion- is outside the Church of Vows. Five enemies (2 horns, 2 Slender Swords, 1 Estoc) very close to the Site of Grace. Hope this helps.

Got this from another post. Travel/unlock the SCHOOLHOUSE CLASSROOM SITE OF GRACE. There is 3 enemies outside, i was lucky and got it on the first drop :). It 100% drops there

Update 1.06: if you're at 16 strength like the build suggest I recommend a great sword. Either bastard, lordsworns or claymore are good choices. Plus I d switch the brass shield for the lordsworns great shield since you have much better guard power + opponents bounce of greatshields more often vs medium shields. There's also a 14 Str Option if you don't wanna go up to 26. The guard counter of greatswords has been buffed. It comes out faster plus their regular stagger is better than straight swords.

@@jacob9919 kinda. Great swords guard counters are great! If you plan on using skills like barricade shield and the guard talisman than the brass shield is better because barricade shield / guard talisman work better on medium shields.

Lordsworn Straight Sword is an amazing choice and drops easier than the one in the video. Also, if you are going to show images of your site I would advice you zoom in or crop the image, its hard to see the text in smartphones.

I LOVE power stance; it’s why DS2 was always my favorite till this game came out…so I have a pair of Lordsworn Straight Swords for bosses or situations that I don’t need as much defense and go nuts with them…but I think I’m gunna push into some defensive-er tactics since some stuff has been rough.

I farmed the heck out of nobles to get the sword (several hours, almost gave up, horrendous drop rate), and I'd say it's been worth it. The thrusting move (R2) feels like it reaches way further than the Longsworn's sword

At this point I'm just watching Elden Ring videos to consume content for it and see what other people have created. My god I love this game. As usual man you've built some things outside the box that look like a lot of fun to play. Going to be doing a few unique builds myself in my next playthroughs. (Currently have 350+ hours in the game and only on my second playthrough.) Half the fun is trying to come up with stuff people haven't thought of that synergizes, yet another aspect of the game that is challenging and rewards you for the effort.

Great work as always. Here's a humble contribution with 3 weapons I found to be good alternatives for the Noble's Slender Sword should you want some variation, still Paladin-looking, available early, and keeping low STR/DEX as this is a midgame build and we already need Vig/End/Faith : Chainlink Flail : 18STR/12DEX requirement. Has a 100 crit modifier instead of the Noble's Slender Sword's 110 and probably a lower reach (I don't have exact numbers on this), but it deals strike damage (very useful) and induces bleed status (also very useful), also has a fairly fast counter attack animation and an amazing R2 on horseback (honestly it rocks). Personal opinion : flails look fantastic on paladins, on foot and on horseback, but the issue with the other early available flails is their high Dex requirement on a build that's already spreaded pretty thin stat-wise (Nightrider Flail for exemple looks amazing and really gives a "Black Templar" vibe but unfortunately needs 24 DEX and therefore sacrifice very valuable Stat points for looking great, not gonna judge if you do tho because it does look fantastic) the Chainlink flail is the only early flail that doesn't require high dex. Drops at (very) low rate on the Pumpkin Heads that wield it (there's one at the entrance of Fort Haight but only if u haven't cleaned it already, and another one west of the Four Belfries site of grace, near the soldier encampment) Should you evolve this build into a higher strength character with a greatshield, the STR scaling on this won't go to waste. Lordsworn's Greatsword : 16STR/10 requirement which is exactly what we already need for the Brass Shield. The only greatsword in the game with a 110 crit modifier. A heavier hitting with longer reach alternative, but with a slower counter attack animation (I did find myself interrupted while counterattacking with this weapon more often than I should have been). Looks great on foot but it does look a bit off when on horseback as the sword clips through the shield (not gonna lie it kinda breaks immersion for me). Available right at the start of the game from the chest in one of the wagon near Gatefront Ruins. Lordsworn's Straight Sword : 10STR/10DEX requirement. More damage than the Noble's Slender Sword but has lower reach. Same 110 crit modifier. Looks good but not as golden. I'd personnaly value the reach of the NSS more than the small loss in damage. Potato-Patatoe but it does have the advantage of being more accessible if you don't wanna hurt your sanity farming the noble wanderers for 3 hours. I considered the Morning Star as an alternative to the Chainlink Flail as it is easier to access and still has strike and bleed, but the reach looks very low (again maybe it's just visual I'd need exact numbers) and I feel you lack the good looks of the flail + the stunning R2 mounted attack.

Also as a player doing this build put like 1 point into arcane 9>10 and int 9 >13. This will allow you to drop the ashes of war and have pure physical then it allows you to use black fire, blood fire, lightening and order blade incantations all these will do more damage than the ashes of war and last longer. Only black fire blade will last a short time like 15 seconds but it's a quick cast so here's my tip, have it prepared when you know a stagger is coming then switch to cast it takes like 2 seconds then do your reposte, with a lordsworn straight sword +5 and 20 strength with 20 faith you do around 410 damage on the troll outside the 3rd church of Marika but with the black flame blade it goes up to around 650.

I had huge issues with the flail to hit enemies after the guard counter. Sadly, it does and upwards swing like the longsword, but since only the chain should hit the target, then it "whiffs" and does no damage. Morning star is better for guard counters and those crystal enemies, or the nightrider flail but that one has huge dex requirement. I've since moved on to the spear, for the longer reach but as far as mid game goes, straight swords or morning star should be better

Holy resistance only becomes a problem in late-game but if you're still using this build then, get the Flaming Strike Ash of War in Redmane Castle. It's basically Sacred Blade except Fire instead of Holy.

I have a similar build, but I use the Morning Star: low stat requirements and bleed buildup, which is amazing, at the expense of some range. Same Ash of War loadout. But I've put more points into mind and faith for more incantations and less in endurance, which I compensate with the Radagon scar/soreseal and the Erdtree Favor. I don't use the turtle (I feel stamina replenishes pretty quickly already) nor the assassin's dagger (which is amazing, by the way, but I need the compensations) and the third talisman is the curved sword one for improved counters. I do use a lot of offensive incantations, though, such as lighting spear, the flames of frenzy (best AoE I've found so far, despite possible interruption, but better range and less FP cost) and black flame, besides the blessing's boon and another buff spell (such as magic defense buff). I wonder if putting some points into intelligence (for 13) in order to get that incantation from D that gives sacred buff to your weapon is worth it.

@@K40005 I don't follow. Sacred Blade is an Ash of War. Which is somewhat related to an incantation in that it gives the weapon a holy boost (it shines gold) after shooting a projectile. This ash of war is infused in my weapon, while also giving it the Sacred affinity. My question is: if Sacred Blade works, would Sacred-inffusing incantations (such as D's one) work as well? I know incantations of other types of affinities do not; but maybe Sacred-affinity incantations do work on Sacred weapons? That's the question. And if it works, would it be better than just using the incantation on a neutral affinity (keen or heavy, etc) weapon?

Interesting, I came to a somewhat similar build but I'd say it's even more defensive oriented. My build includes a greatshield, which - combined with the barricade shield ability - means you're losing absolutely NO stamina. Even against boss heavy attacks. You will block EVERYTHING and lose no stamina. And all of this means I need less endurance, because carry weight can be improved with either the arsenal charm, or bettter yet - the great-jar's arsenal. As you did, I'm using the Cerulean Dagger and Curved Sword talisman as well. I've put most points into strength, doing the exact opposite of where you invested the bare necessities into strength I have done the same with faith (17, to hit lightning strike, this is my 'ranged option') and use the Clawmark Seal so that incantations can scale off of the strength, and use a weapon with Heavy infusion for better strength scaling. We have acces to Poison Armament, Electrify Armament and Bloodflame Blade with minimal extra investment in other attributes (Needs 10 arcane) Additonally Flame, Cleanse Me, and Flame, Grant Me Strength are available. This offers so much versatility.

@@cansabaner6352 I am using a mace, it's quick, and it's counter-attack is pretty quick, does blunt damage which is useful against many enemies such as gargoyles and other 'solid' enemies and has a decently low-weight, freeing up weight for your Greatshield and armor, plus I like the aesthetics. As with TOO much versatility, I wouldn't worry too much. You're not sacrificing a lot of points to hit a bunch of requirements. You've got minimal endurance needed, the tiniest bit of Faith (or you can use the +5 faith talisman) however much Mind you prefer, and the rest can be pumped into Strength and Vitality, with a greater focus on Strength for hitting Greatshield requirements and propping up the damage of my relatively small weapon. Fighting bosses and chonky enemies consists mostly of buffing up pre-fight, use the Physick that boosts strength and lightning damage, buffing the Mace with lightning damage through Electrify Armament, buffing damage further with Flame, Grant Me Strength and possibly even applying Bestial Vitality for some extra in-fight healing. For normal fights you can rely on just the Electrify Armament and Barricade Shield and earn that mana back by shield-countering and doing the critical strike. If you want you could substitute the mace for another weapon with a slightly higher Crit rating to make those more effective. As a sidenote, the Cuckoo Greatshield is fantastic and has a reasonably low weight with fantastic magical defense on top. You can farm it just north of Raya Lucaria in the forest, the mounted knights drop them.

But if I get a really opening or just want to burst something down? Wild Strikes with a Morning Star's bleed might be pretty brutal. At that point though maybe I'm looking at rolling a Vagabond instead of going Faith XD I dunno.

Together with Bloodflame Blade it will stack super quick, which - along with ranged options like lightning strike and aoes like Bestial Claw is worth the little dip into Faith for in my opinion.

I'm using the Winged Scythe on a very similar build. It scales with faith but you can't use ashes of war on it. It does have a good range and swings mostly horizontally for decent aoe. It's skill is a pretty good jumping aoe thing that I think actually hits twice if you are close enough. It does a 4 light attack combo that will stun most basic enemies if they actually survive it. It also does bleed damage, and it is in a chest that you can get to fairly easily if you just ride past enemies on your horse so you don't have to farm it.

I have been using a spear, the one that drops of the first knights. I like it because you can light attack past shield guard. Any reason to prefer the sword over spear?

In these FromSoft games, you will find that straight swords are incredibly reliable and versatile. Relatively light weapons with good attack speed and damage, and some ability to hit multiple enemies at once with their wider swings. I'm of the opinion that many bosses in Elden Ring, and especially Dark Souls 3, were almost kind of balanced around you having a straight sword, considering timings and openings. Spears and thrusting swords are very good options for shield users considering their defensive style, though most of them only have pokes and stabs for attacks.

My issue with the barricade thing is that it does not last long, it is very situational, and it prevents me to use my sword skill without removing my sword or take my sword two handed, which I find a bit dangerous in the middle of a fight. Or maybe I should learn how to parry with my sword, though I doubt it will be as efficient as with the shield :)

I made a little bit of a sacrifice on my Vig, END, And halved my FTH stat ( currently at 15 VIG, 15 END, and was at 35 FTH but dropped it to 24) and put those points into INT in order to use the legendary armament Sword of Night and Flame. The weapon requires a heavy stat investment (stats required: STR 12/Dex 12/ INT 24/FTH 24) The Sword hits like a truck though and best part it has 2 Ashes of War : The moon beam Rennala uses with Light attack and a fire storm aoe the wraps around you like Godrick does for aoe attacks with the Heavy hit button. This sword is great in long range and close range and in groups of enemies w if you don’t have the tail swipe incantation yet. You also get the sword early game, it’s in Liurnia Lake at the very Northmost building on the map called Caria Manor. The Manor has high level enemies there so sneak around if you are low level but if you want to take the manner on I was able to clear it comfortably at the level Fextra is at here (LV 50-60) If you are able to take out the enemies there comfortably then farm them as the small enemies drop Somber Shards(2) and the Large one’s Somber Shards(3) and they drop them regularly. You f you need the Somber Shards(1) there is a giant blacksmith whom will sell them to you just south of the entrance to Caria Manor Jesse that village of madmen and women. You nee dl these stones to upgrade the sword. The sword scales with INT/FTH the most (currently have a C rating on those stats at +4)

I tried this, it made things really hard for me because I wasn't dealing as much damage as I should for my level and I didn't have the hp I needed. Eventually I respecced and things have been so much better as a faith focused build.

Why don't you used the Turtle shield instead? It still has 100 psychical defense, weighs a bit less and gives the Turtle talisman effect. This would give an option for a different talisman as the shield has the effect anyways, and would give some options for slightly heavier armor.

Another fun weapon option to consider is the morning star and putting bloodflame blade on it. Is it as paladin like? No. Is getting MORE bleed on a morning star good? Yes Also, if you have a Erdsteel dagger, put your buffing weapon art on that! And put wild strikes on your morning star!

Can confirm-putting the buff on a dagger is the way to go. With buff and sacred blade I’m doing 575 per swing with a long sword. Pretty crazy damage for a class with such survivability. Great for soloing the game

The best place is just south of Caelid Highway South grace spot. Look for those graves that have runes in them. Be careful of the giant that can spawn from killing one of the Wandering Nobles. Six of them spawn here and it's extremely easy to wipe them out. I got this tip from an anonymous fextralife wiki comment. WAY easier than the road in limgrave. Try to avoid killing the one that spawns the giant once you figure out which one it is. Or don't bother since you can just run around him

Man... I really wish FromSoft would make respecing easier, especially considering this is alot of peoples entry into the "Souls" genre. I'm thirty hours in and I've messed my Paladin build up and I have to jump through hoops just to change my stats. There's no reason why they couldn't have just slapped a 50k rune cost on respecing with an added 10k every time you decide to reallocate your stats.

You'd have to switch to two handing the sword, apply the buff, then switch back to sword/shield. That's what I've been doing, once you do it a lot you'll be able to do it fast it becomes second nature.

This is almost the exact build I'm using. Late game I felt like I *had* to start pumping mind. I have explored extensively, and I just haven't found a great way to get fp back, as it seems most items in the game are based around mitigating fp use, rather than giving it back for free. I am level 130 currently, and struggling hard on the Valkyrie lady from the trailers.

Later on, you will be able to respec...save those Larval Tears! I did the same thing, I wanted to use that halberd, but after switching I am glad i did, the halberd does tons of damage, but slow af. If not carefui you get whacked trying to do a guard counter, with the shorter faster weapon, it rarely happens.

Great guides all around. Much appreciated on the effort. The one thing to mention is the fact that any boss that doesn't stagger in 2 or 3 hits will merk you almost guaranteed. Maybe my sword isn't as cool as his, but I hit hard and counter smack constantly. I still get broken with 30e and get dropped when they continue to smack even when I'm blocking/countering. A lot of these mini bosses will not give af if you block counter if they hit more than 2 or 3 times consistently. Be careful how you use that counter attack or you'll end up getting slapped when they break your stance.

For those who don’t know, spears allow you to attack with your shield still raised. You could potentially kill a certain NPC in Murkwater Cave and get a +7 spear at what is essentially the beginning of the game.

@@deboy00100 Im using the Bloodflame Blade faith spell to apply bleed effect to any weapon I use. BUT theres one bleed spear thats really decent, but it has a stupid high arc requirement, but theres a bleed spear called Inquisitor's Girandole, in the fire area which the Bloodflame Blade spell stacks with, which is what im aiming for, currently using the +7 spear mysellf. Started as confessor. 20 vig, 20 endruance, 20 str, 16 dex, 10 arcana(1 point for bloodflame req) and im currently dumping everything into fath for when I pick up that grand spear that scales off faith and ofc more faith spells, they become bonkers after a while. Maybe im gonna need a little bit mind later on for fp, but not been an issue so far. I did vig first, then balanced out the stats as I needed. Its fairly easy to use, requires no setup unless you want summons to help you, Ive been using the rotten stray, feel the dot fits my tanky playstyle. You could probably not take as much str or dex as me, but I love changing around weapons. I also took the liberty of checking fextralifes wiki and you can find both spears, bloodflame blade and spear counterstrike talisman on the interactive map:) Hope I didnt leave anything out>.< Edit: I did, need the shield ashes from the night knight rider.

I tried this build out but my reality seems to be very different from this with regards to the guard counter. In your showcase, we can see that you drop bosses to their knees all the time but when I try this build out on the same bosses i can do 8+ guard counters on them and they won't drop once. Normal enemies tend to get staggered by one or two guard counters but on bosses i have not managed a single time. Am i doing something very wrong or are there crucial aspects to this build not shown in the video?

I think the issue here is that stagger damage actually works like an invisible stun bar that fills each time you counter, but it also decays over time. So in order to actually stun a boss, you have to hit them with a lot of stagger quickly and not all bosses will have attack patterns that make that feasible purely with guard counters. I usually try to mix counters and jump attacks, that usually does the trick.

Another important element of stamina conservation: Dodging. Especially with the heavier attacks. They lag and are designed to catch people panic-rolling, but if you keep calm and watch the timing for a dodge, you'll conserve stamina vs blocking those big hits, and open up more opportunities to safely sneak in an R1 or two, possibly even a fully charged R2 if it's a big enough whiff.

There is a talisman you can choose for your keepsake that pulls aggro. I have been using an almost exactly similar build. If you didnt start with the talisman it can also be picked up in the north east of linuria of the lakes at the frenzy flame village.

how would this build be different than building a mix of strength/faith rather than only faith? Unless you're using a ton of spells wouldn't it be practically the same since you're mainly relying on r1's and r2's for damage? I can be completely wrong btw I'm just theorizing.

I'm using the claymore and i love it! Use it 1 handed though, alongside the brass shield. It's slower, but the damage is insane and the reach is also great.

I got super lucky with the drop rate of the noble king sword, I killed two mobs! I actuality had more trouble getting the brass shield, but I won’t complain! Happy hunting!
