Realizing using the attribute talisman to increase the stats is not worth taking extra damage, however using the favor talisman can help with health, stamina, and equipment load has a little more use

the shield ones can be yeah. but they get staggered from a single parry. Spear ones are trickier to parry but they are more susceptible to followup attacks as they have no shield.

I think it's not so bad as it sounds... If you keep spamming either the attack or the dodge button, it's gonna be bad. It'd really help to just wait for the right moment as it will surely come. It always does.
