Something interesting about the giant crows is that they will pretend to get staggered, making the guard break noise and everything, and if you get off Torrent they will immediately go for a grab attack. To make it more convincing, they only do this move when their stance is close to actually breaking.

One of the ideas followers of the rot worship is the idea of "life, death, and rebirth." I believe sage Gowry has some dialogue regarding this. Maybe the fungal growths are all the organisms that died to Scarlet Rot in the past, now reborn as fungus and are a part of the rot itself. Arteria leaves also seem to have blood flowing through them. So maybe beings that succumb and die to the rot continue to sorta live on in a sense, but they're not really sentient anymore and their organic matter such as blood is not their own blood anymore, but rather fuel for the fungus and rot to thrive. Sorta like in death you are living on by literally becoming one with the rot. I believe this is what Gowry meant when he talks about the rot creating life as much as it takes away life. While the rot kills this world, new life is born from it, so as much as the rot is a destructive force it is also a life-giving and creating force, just in a way which is abnormal and disturbing to most people who aren't followers of the scarlet rot.

Interesting thing to note about the dino dogs: It seems that their minds may still be somewhat intact despite their extreme changes to their bodies. Going into Dragonbarrow from the Caelem Ruins (where you fight the two pumpkin heads together), go up the path to the grace, then travel left towards the isolated merchants shack, you'll find a large area with several spaced out Caled dogs. If you look carefully though, they aren't just mindlessly wandering, and instead protecting groups of goats and rams. It seems like they were once herding dogs that became corrupted by rot but continued with their duties.

Elden Ring's areas can be viewed as seasons. You start out in spring and summer type areas that include Limgrave, Liurnia, and the Weeping Peninsula. It's advised to wait a bit before going to Caelid which is the late Summer scorched earth area. The sky is red there like late August and the scarlet rot has acted like a blight a drought on the area drying it up. After that the stars return and you can venture into night in the Eternal Cities. Then there's the Autumnal areas of the Atlus Plateau and the royal city. Followed by the harsh winter of the Mountain Top of the Giants and Consecrated Snowfield. The Haligtree area is like a frozen in time area where it's the end of fall and the beginning of winter's cold embrace. Very funerary too and deathbed like. The poison of the scarlet rot flows through the tree like a disease through a person and at the bottom are the graves of fallen warriors and a resting place / place of rebirth for the brother and sister demigods.

There are a couple issues with your explanation on the dogs' evolution. The ones found in the mountaintops are to show us that the dogs were already megafauna, not that the rot caused their creation. If that were the case, we would have seen rot dogs or giant dogs in consecrated snowfield, which is actually connected to Haligtree, rather than the mountaintops that overlook it. Instead we only find wolves and dire wolves, the latter serving as Albinauric mounts, and neither are suffering from the rot. However, we know the astrologers considered the giants their neighbors. There likely was a land bridge between mountaintops and upper caelid/dragonbarrow which linked the two lands. That's why they share certain megafauna like the giant crows and giant dogs. Another issue is that the giant dogs don't cause rot with their bites, unlike the rotten strays you mention. Even Gowry's giant dog doesn't have a rotten bite. It's only method of rot is coughing, much like Ekzykes. And like Ekzykes, it seems to be an change on an already existing species. Both the dragons and giant dogs were that size before the rot goddess, since you can find giant dogs in a land untouched by the rot, and you can find similarly sized dragons in dragonbarrow. The most unsettling thing about Caelid is that most of the creatures are unbothered by the rot. The megafauna could take it or leave it, and the dragonflies are just as annoying there as anywhere else. The rot obviously affects humans, but it's effect on animals in the region is strangely light.

I think maybe the rot isn't malevolent itself, but is simply trying to exist and is naturally competing with the nature we perceive as "how it should be". It reminds me a lot of the Shimmer from Annihilation, how it transforms things incidentally. "I don't know if it wants." The scarlet rot can create life, as seen by the fungi, kindred of rot and millicent and her sisters. Who are we to judge what deserves to exist and what doesn't? Chances are there's a thriving scarlet rot planet somewhere with its own fully functioning ecosystem that while harmful to us is equally valid as being alive. In conclusion, send the scarlet rot god to the moon or something where it doesn't interfere with what's going on on the ground

Excellent use of Myuu's "Deadly Sorrow." Makes sense in the context of the region. The sorrow one feels when looking at the blighted landscape and the state of those who live in it. That is, after you're done panicking at the deadly army of murder crows, dino dogs, and cultist centipede men. Ekzykes is a good example of this. Never thought about how terrible his existence was when he was making mine and many others a living hell.

The Rot appears to me to be a form of stagnated mutation; it isn't as it should be. Gowry says he dedicated himself to the cycle of death and rebirth, but there is nothing of the sort in the Lands Between due to Marika removing Destined Death from the Elden Ring. So the Rot's function seems to be mutation via decay, reassembling organisms after they are sufficiently denatured. Malenia is very beautiful in her new form, and incredibly powerful, so I wonder if the Scarlet Rot could be a beautiful force that seeks to rebuild life into more robust structures. It would be wretched to experience, especially if it was unending, but that's just a theory. A GAME THEO--

I think the megafauna atop Flame Peak *do* contradict the belief that their origin is from scarlet rot, as it'd make more sense to find them in the Consecrated Snowfield - where a putrid avatar can be found - in that case. I instead believe that they're simply a form of primordial life, who later learned to adapt to the scarlet rot after Malenia's bloom. In the Battle of Aeonia teaser, Caelid already had a red sky before Malenia's bloom in Caelid. I believe that Caelid once housed primeval wilderness before it was razed into a rotted hellscape (Alexander refers to Caelid as the "wilds", and if you're a subscriber to Hawkshaw's color theory, red is thought to represent untamed wilderness among other things) It is so that I also believe that the reason we find these megafauna atop Flame Peak is because it too is a rare bastion of untamed wilderness which was never fully tempered by the Golden Order due to it's remoteness (Giants and Trolls also appear to originate from primordial life, given that the former is known to be ancient and the latter have beastly abilities known to normally be exhibited by wild animals)

This is a complete misunderstanding of the rotten stray. The dogs we find around most of the Lands Between are normal strays. A variant stray in Caelid has visible rot growth on its body. That is the rotten stray. The rotten stray and a normal stray for comparison are actually visible in this video while the rotten stray topic is being discussed. The two dogs are clearly not the same as one another.

I have a theory that might be wrong but it's also not out of the question. What if the lands between use to be a big ring. There are giant skeletons around Caelid yet no one has explained why they're there. Maybe they were fire giants who lived on some land mass that lead right to the forge of the giants. Maybe while the war on giants was going on, the land mass in between Caelid and the Forge of the giants was broken or cut off, which left some giants behind in caelid to perish, and to make things worse for them, Malenia Nuked the entire land of caelid so even if there were some giants alive, they wouldn't last very long against the scarlet rot
@fakechloe207 Жыл бұрын
That's actually quite possible considering that from the description of the map "The dragons that escaped the scarlet rot and made nest of the plateau to Caelid's north. Thus it was named "Dragonbarrow," and none dare to enter." With this in mind, we are also aware that wyvern dragons also existed in the mountain tops of the giants. So not only do Caelid and the mountain tops have similar ecological systems but they also are home to significant races, like the giants and the wyvern dragons.

Funny enough about Caelid...I think that all the animals there are, in fact, native and natural to the Land's Between. Why's that? Because players encounter both in areas not afflicted by Scarlet Rot. You can find Tyrannodogs (Giant Dogs officially) in the Mountaintops of the Giants, while the giant crows can be encountered both at the mountaintops and in the grounds of Mohgwyn Palace. I like to think that the Scarlet Rot hasn't affected the shape or appearance of these animals much...but what it has done is heighten their aggression. They're found actively attacking caravans, patrolling abandoned roadsides, overlooking lost settlements, and even attacking waystations like the fortifications over at the bridge leading to Redmane Castle. This place, the Caelid Wilds, likely earned its moniker long before being overcome by Scarlet Rot. It's just made things that much worse. Edit - Also at 3:40, I feel like that connection's a stretch. The Haligtree's a whole other zone away from the Mountaintops, and while it is connected still, there are no giant dogs in the Consecrated Snowfields, nor evidence of rot starting to spread out across the plateau the Snowfield is located.

I actually remember coming across this theory once before! It's interesting but there's not enough in-game to really back it up. I love this kind of thinking and theory crafting though, keep it up!
@buggy50792 жыл бұрын
@@square-table-gaming ty for your feedback, really appreciate it !! I dont want to sound rude in any way tho but while I understand the "just a reused animation" thing, there is too much going for the theory of these beings who also have zero literal text written on them in game. - The "dogs" are always found where crows are (caelid and mountain top of the giants). -The "dogs" have the same anatomy as a crow (this is why they look like t-rex). -The crows are growing sharp theeth and losing feathers but gaining fur. -The "dogs" have very similar attacks to the crows and even have an attack where they try to stab the ground with their non-existent beak (muscle memory), but since they no longer have one, they end up smashing their head on the ground, getting hurt. -The trolls attack only two enemies, the crows and the dogs. -Some "dogs" breath out rot. -there are no dogs in mohgwyn palace becuase the Crows in Mohgwyn palace die due to the formeless mother before reaching their "dog" phase. So its much more than their animations, theres direct visual, motion and geographic correlations between these two beings. also, i feel this is important, they dont actually reuse animations, they have different skeletons and while the crows stab the ground, the "dogs" bang their head. so excusing it as a dev reuse animation is not entirely true. just a theory tho, but these beings have no concrete lore to them, and I can see no other reason as to why we have T-rex "dogs".

decaying ekzykes is a star wars easter egg change my mind. he is suffering a disease that should've rendered him dead or at the very least in the same state as Greyoll crippled and unable to move. instead his hatred for the dragon hunters partaking in dragon communion and the anger from it was so powerful he was able to ward off the power of the scarlet rot even bending it to his own will and benefit utilizing it as a means of attack. remaining strong and deadly even in a state of rot. Now that is a Straight Sith Lord reference if I ever saw one. whether intentional or unintentional lol

The probable reason there is giant dogs at caelid and mountaintops is probably because they were connected once,we can also find the same type of giant skulls in both places and only in them. So rather than the rot making them gigantic its possible they are already this way for having to survive harsh climates.

@square-table-gaming i meant as in he's immune to the scarlet rot since he prances through it like nothing
@square-table-gaming Жыл бұрын
@@alejandrorodriguez3376 there's a very real possibility that that's entirely due to gameplay convenience. Also, he is a spectral steed so that may play a part.
