After nearly three years of waiting and five years of development, From Software's biggest, most ambitious title to date is finally here. The true successor to the Demon's Souls / Dark Souls / Bloodborne mantle has arrived. Elden Ring -- an awe-striking, open world action-RPG led by FromSoft's Hidetaka Miyazaki and Yui Tanimura, with writing credit to the one and only George R.R. Martin. Was it worth the wait?

really liked that youre giving Yui Tanimura his due credit here.. People always only talk about Miyazaki and yes for good reason, but Tanimura has brought sooo much to these games and needs to get recognition. Great Video.

I think Japanese studio directors get so much credit in the West because it’s hard with language and name differences for Westerners to remember and discuss and build notoriety for entire teams, also whether intentionally or not, Hideo Kojima really built himself into a name that is synonymous with any game he works on, even arguably surpassing the studio name attachment to the game itself. We do this in the West with some Western directors too, like Ken Levine for example, but there is also an emphasis on attributing success of games to studios or specifying what department of a studio did a notable job on a product, like “level design was great” or “Platinum Games worked on combat while Avalanche built the world” etc.

People love to ascribe success to a single man. The entire team at Fromsoft deserve way more recognition, especially for Dark Souls 2, yeah it's got it's problems but holy shit that game is amazing. Currently 210 hours deep in Elden Ring, this studio can't possibly do any better, can they!?

It’s the auteur problem, any time there is someone like this involved people get caught up praising them and forget there are hundreds of people putting in just as much effort to make sure these things come together the way they do, and often the auteurs would be very little without great teams and other visionaries behind them

I paid $60, I've played 160hrs, and don't intend to quit playing anytime soon. I would argue buying this game is like buying the Sistine Chapel for less than a candy bar and being able to truly immerse yourself in every square inch of it in a way that's nothing short of transcendent every step of the way. A work of art that future generations will look back on with awe. An experience that I genuinely believe could alter the course of human history if for no other reason than the sense of deep challenge and triumph, chosen by your own hands in the most fantastic and magical ways imaginable, that is in such short supply these days. Capable of being both enjoyable and deeply enlightening, somber and profoundly uplifting, enthralling and depressing, all at the same time without sacrificing the quality of any single element for the whole, nor the whole for any of Its parts. Even those things which are validly criticized illuminate the imperfection that must be present for profound beauty to exist in the first place. As in any work of true art made by any imperfect human being, in this case, and the case of the Chapel, many human beings, pursuing a unified vision that now might be shared with the world. Each element blending so seamlessly that it almost feels effortless in its execution. Enough gushing XD Well worth the price, and then some, which is far more than I can say for any other AAA title in the last few years.

Something you said about summoning a mimic and rolling bosses with hoarfrost stomp. I 100% agree. At the moment Im playing through the game with no bleed no frost no summons etc as a challenge for myself. BUT those mechanics are in the game IF you want to use them its 100% preference. This is my what 4th? playthrough first i used bleed a bit in the end and some summons for some bosses (im looking at you Malenia) second was a pure faith. third was a pure int and now im going with just a quality build with the idea that i want to REALLY learn to dodge everything. how to counter every move from bosses etc etc (ATM im trying to parry Malenia to death.... been stuck with it for a couple of hours now). BUT if this is not something your interested in well dont do it. This is the exact reason why I always loved the souls games so much. being able to play how you want with the own challenges you want etc etc is super nice!

Great review. Good on you for actually giving Tanimura credit. He's the co-director, after all. I agree on some bosses having a lot of responses to attacks, it does feel like I have to accept the inevitability of getting hit if I want to do damage as a melee-only player. Thank goodness for summons, it seems to be exactly what they're meant to help with.

I agree 100% this game is a masterpiece and i’ve experienced some of my most special moments in gaming over the last week. The art design and world they created is breathtaking, i’m not a big graphics guy but the game runs very well on my series S and looks good. I fell in love with this game from the start, even though I had to learn the controls and died looking like a fool for the first few hours. I got better and I love getting in 1v1s with enemies who aren’t the size of giants, Alecto is one of my favorite mini bosses, her movement is slick and graceful, she does tons of damage but her moves are otherwise predictable and it’s a fair fight. I get so focused and hyped while in these boss fights, it is so epic and there’s no better feeling than felling a great opponent, then snatching her spirit and using her as a summon. I try not to use summons but some of the fights feel like they’re designed around them.

My only major complaint for the game is in regards to the PC version. Being locked at 60fps sucks and if i had to guess it is this lock that causes the intermittent stuttering that has gotten me killed more times than is acceptable in a reflex based game. If they can fix that the game is a 10/10 for me easily. Even with this damn near game breaking performance issue i have still had more fun with Elden Ring than any game I've played for at least over a decade. It really is a masterpiece and I'm really looking forward to finally finishing the other Dark Souls games now. edit: also well done on this review. i can't believe you have so few subscribers. you have a very nice channel. subbed for sure.

Nice review, my hopes that any minor flaws or shortcomings are fixed in future patches and the massive DLC pack we know and expect from Souls games, every Souls DLC massively improved the core game and added interesting things to it, I hope they already started working in Elden Ring DLC and that it will add a whole new area (maybe size of Limgrave) and the expected package of new weapons/magic/armor and NPCs/Story extensions. The two things that I'd like to also see is for Great Runes to be given much more significance and truly unique gameplay altering properties that match their huge significance in the story (i.e Radhan's rune when activated should for example allow you to defy gravity by jumping higher and also be able to drop safely from any height as long as it's not a bottomless pit) The 2nd thing is for PVP to be expanded upon and given some more structure, something like automated tournaments that players can sign up for and maybe take place in the giant colessiums around the map which are still inaccessible despite their massive size and modeled interiors, and they should give cool unique rewards that are mostly useful for PVP combat or fashion souls (as well as PVP leaderboards that reset every few months), also horseback combat/jousting matches in a closed arena would be super cool.

The role-playing aspect of this game is absolutely fantastic. I've been playing as Wolverine for a while now and it's amazing. Just make it dude with Mutt and chaps, get the claws, and get the Health Region Talisman and some incantations that do overtime healing. Also a Talisman s jump attacks for That Sweet Wolverine lunge and the ash of War where you scream and it puts you in like a berserk rage mode that increases your strength

I'm guessing the texture pop-in is a console thing. I played the game on PC and I never noticed anything like that. There were frame drops but like he said it usually stays in a good range with occasional lag spikes (although I think this was due to internet problems). The game crashed on me once and I have no idea why there wasn't anything crazy happening so it was weird. Btw my PC specs are more than enough for what the game suggested

This game is a success in so many ways that it’s actually hard to know where to begin when praising it. Do you praise it for being one of the only AAA games that are uncorrupted by the greed of their peers, putting microtransactions, battle passes, overly handholdy story that makes sure you see every part of the game the devs put some effort in or even just releasing the full game and releasing it in a perfectly acceptable state optimization-wise? Do you praise them for having some of the best art direction and design to ever grace computer screens? Do you praise them for writing a gargantuan world filled to the brim with stories and characters and having the restraint to not parade them in front of you to a point where people who don’t know better are actually criticising it for poor quest design? Love the vid btw

Im gonna have to kindly disagree with you on Bloodborne and Sekiro having disappointing gameplay and combat. The combat and gameplay in both games are masterpieces in their own rights. It shocks me that people can be such fans of from soft games series and get upset at either game when its clear this game took inspiration from both games and not only that they were incredibly fun, highly challenging, they had a fantastic worlds, Incredible environments, they are packed with lore and secrets to explore, and like this game there was really never a dull moment throughout the entire game I mean what more can you ask for even if its alittle different? Beats cyberscam 2077 or Fallout76 or any other game made by creators we trusted but gave us a heaping pile of shit instead. Sekiro and Bloodborne are in my opinion some of the best games ever made along with this game and I cannot wait for Bloodborne 2 should the day ever come. Its about time we return to the Hunters Dream and slay the beastly scourge again.

I kinda don't agree with that. Elden Ring is a 10/10, but I really have to think about it to give it that score. When I'm fighting melee-only the last boss it sure doesn't feel like a 10/10. It's when I recall all the incredible memories of exploring the world, finding out about the lore, the characters and the level design where I can truly say with confidence that it's one of the best games of the last 10 years. But it's certainly not perfect. Just that the final product it's bigger than the sum of it's parts.

@@angelamengualcortinas3614 You're welcome to disagree and i do sort of get where you're coming from. I just think that if you have to think that hard it isn't a true 10 in your eyes. That's jut my personal belief. Its a feeling and an effect more than it is a calculation, because if you were really factoring in every little flaw, it certainly wouldnt be a ten, no game is perfect. Your overall experience has to be that strong that 10 just comes to mind, that's why I say it's more of a feeling.

Generally, I don’t think balancing the game around Summons and cheap shit like broken blood and whatnot makes this game far from a masterpiece. Fighting every boss with melee only isn’t viable at all, and there enough for me. The bosses having Sekiro boss philosophy without any I frames fast enough as Sekiro’s parry makes it far from a masterpiece from me. Sure you can have loads of fun. But is it a complete experience, and how much more fun could I have had of half the bosses I fought weren’t distracted by a summon.

For those who don't know, Sekiro was originally going to be From Software's newest Tenchu game (they published Tenchu 3: Wratch of Heaven for Ps2) and then it "evolved into it's own thing" according to the creators. That's why it's so different. All the mechanics of Demon's Souls/Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Sekiro are Tenchu games. The "estus flask" and how it works it directly from the healing potions from Tenchu 1. This is why there are "critical hits/backstabs" because it's always been a Tenchu game repurposed to be a Berserk fanfiction.

New Souls player here. I also hate difficult games. I like Elden Ring because it’s difficult in a way that isn’t frustrating. It just makes you want to try harder, different things, etc… Trying different builds, items, and spells is awesome. I give it a 95. On the downside, the replayability sucks. I’m on my second playthrough and it’s honestly not that fun. NG+ is pointless. Maybe they should add another talisman slot. The multiplayer is extremely lacking. It’s way too easy to miss a ton of the content. Still, the first play through was so much fun. It’s an awesome game.

undeniable titan of a game but if I have to criticize anything it's the reuse of bosses especially towards the end (and no this is not the same as bitching about door opening animations and crabs from previous games). I feel this shouldn't be overlooked because it somewhat acts as the opposite of reward for thorough exploration and doing side content. at times I borderline preferred an encounter to not have been there at all rather than facing a boss I loved the first time and felt was special, three or more times in different configurations, because it deflates the feeling of OOOH SHIIIT especially when stuff should get progressively more epic and insane towards the endgame, but instead it's a bit too much of - oh this guy again with more HP, or two of em together

you mean you block with a shield, use spells, use summons and get hit? that is not how you play these games. you should always dodge, shields are for parrying only no blocking, spells are not allowed, just melee, no ranged attacks at all, no special items or ashes or summons or whatever. and you should finish in 30 hours only and play PVP and get your million runes there. and for good measure, you should not use the horse! walking and running is the way to go. /S (LOL)

OK…😳 At first I didn’t give into the hype. I had just heard about this game a little over 2 months ago. People at work kept talking about it so I bought it. Also know that I have never played any Dark Souls, or Sekiro, or any game FROM…software?? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Aaaannnnddd initially I didn’t like it all that much. In fact… After a few days I hated it. 2 weeks went by. I played it again…Aaaaannd AGAIN hated it. I thought to myself “WTF!?? This game is stupid!!” 🤬 I didn’t understand the hype. I kept playing though……. and playing…….and playing……. annnnd……..????……. wait a minute………. I kept playing because something happened. The GAME…became fun. Almost….too fun. 🤔 I got better…Learned new skills. Explored new areas that I CANNOT lie..were absolutely incredible. Eventually..and after 25hrs into the game..I land upon a “secret” elevator that leads you down to what I initially believed to be a dungeon, or small chamber..or something rather insignificant in comparison to other areas in the map. Buuut NOPE! It’s leads me to one of the most amazing areas I’ve seen…😐 Soooo…after all this..ALL I’m trying to say is this. About 10 minutes ago (cause that’s how long it’s taken me to write up to this point lol)… This game is amazing. Incredible. I get it now… 25hrs in?..People have put it hundreds of hours. This could possibly be one of the greatest games I’ve ever played….

On the 70 'unique bosses' there are only 9 bosses that actually don't get repeated. Yes even some shardbearers show up again. Rykar, Radahn, Melania, dragon lord, fire giant, the final bosses, Rennala, and Loux. Those are the only special beings in this gargantuan game. Not to mention caves, catacombs, and mines that are nearly identical in layout, enemies, and rewards (making mines the only worthwhile thing to do imo). Elden ring is a great game, and it only goes to show that one of the few flaws of Fromsoft is their ambition. I think they made a game too big for their capabilities, which forced them to reuse sooo many assets. The endgame is just a fight against enemies you've been fighting since the literal start of the game, but now they deal more damage and wear different armor. Size doesn't matter, it's how you use it. I hope that in future games, they are much smaller, at least 1/2 the size of ER but with the same amount of variety and there is a recipe for the best experiences gaming can provide. (Also please for the love of God zoom out the camera I'm begging you).

In regards of duplicated boss fights, I couldn't disagree more. The amount of repeated bosses, bosses that become regular enemies, enemies that become bosses is insane. Even "unique" story bosses repeat a lot such as Margit where you fight 2 times, than a 3th time but it's Morgott now, which has almost the same move sets plus a few extra more. In between these bosses you''ll fight a lot of duplicated bosses that are not that optional. You kinda have to fight many of them if you want to keep up with the main ones. When it comes to the fast combat, Er is still very much just as fast as Ds 3. Enemies have jumps and twists and long combos, even more so than previews games. The problem is the player's combat has not evolved that much to keep up with this, at it's core it's still Ds1. In Seiko and BB this type of fast combat worked much better since it was adapted to fit this playstyle.
@prawn1717
@prawn1717 2 жыл бұрын
I somewhat disagree with the repeated bosses. Morgott makes total sense, he's known as the "Veiled Monarch" (no one knows his true face), and he beats down ambitious Tarnished before they have the chance to start their journey. Margit was just a disguise. The second fight outside of Leyndell is a bit weird, but it's been established that Omens can create copies of themselves (omens of themselves, if you will), so I assume both versions of Margit were just that. The truly abhorrent copy-paste boss is Godefroy, that shit is just embarrassing. Apart from that, I don't think the rest are too offensive. Would I prefer completely unique bosses across the board? Yes of course, but I wouldn't trade an added year or two onto the release date for it.
@philip47478
@philip47478 2 жыл бұрын
@@prawn1717 I understand from a lore point of view might make sene in the case of Morgott, and if he was the exception i wouldn't mind. But this is a very common pattern regardless of lore. Almost every boss encounter was repeated at least twice. Now imagine if Ds 3 had the Nameless king or Abyss Watchers on repeat 2 or 3 times. I would argue that would greatly diminish the impact and how special these are regardless of lore. Not to mention in Er there are bosses that you fight more than 6 times. It seems From Software made a big open world and then realized they don't have enough content too fill it up.

@@philip47478 I don't remember fighting fighting rennala,radhan,rykard,malenia,malekith,fire giant or dragon lord twice.I agree there too much reused bosses.but the game has over 200 bosses and only 89 unique bosses so i do think they had to make that choice otherwise need to be released waay later.but amongst them few of the reused kinda make sense how godskin was after destined death or something in lore but i wish they atleast updated the moveset there or bring some new type of godskin. fortunatly we didn't get to fight most of the legacy bosses twice as for godfrey it makes sense.honestly if they made godrick fight not a grafted version but him as a dude when he attacked capital i would've accepted that.as for reused i think they are spread out enough for my taste that i could enjoy it.

The open world doesn't really work for me personally. While the landscape looks fantastic I ultimately don't think it adds very much to the experience. Sure, it conveys the scale of the world well but Lordran, Yharnam and Ashina felt huge and real to me as well despite not being able to explore every inch because From Software are masters at conveying a sense of place through smart level design, landmarks and vistas. I think there is too much downtime and a severe lack of proper level and interesting encounter design. Catacombs, Ruins and Mines are too similar to be interesting for very long and I actually found a lot of the rewards boring. It also doesn't help that they reuse bosses all the time. The Legacy Dungeons are great though, probably some of the best levels From Software has designed, I just wish there was more of them.

Who has ever said Elden Ring is Dark Souls 4, 5, and 6 is extremely short sighted and one who dosen't expect much [innovation] from games. There is so much of your opinion I disagree with, in short the game is a 7 out of 10 at best. Empty world full of junk. Too many Grace points cluttering the map thatI will never visit again after discovering. Combat has been the same since Demon Souls. Torrent,..can't do anything with him, no customization, armor, speed boost, triple jump, etc, he's lack luster for someone who is integral to our journey and some NPC quests. But the game is pretty [boring to look at after 90 minutes], has new spells [if you dont count reskinning the old ones], and added verticality which is a pleasant after almost a decade and a half. As far as your video goes, I think it had decent production, you sound almost robotic, I liked the intro style of the first 6 minuts before you actually got into the Elden Ring portion (because I always love to hear praises of Demon/ Dark Souls).

When you strip away the hype Elden ring is just open world dark souls 4. Its a competent and well made game but its not a 10/10 nor is it revolutionary in any way. It's a solid 7/8 out of 10 if people were being honest with themselves. This game has a lot of reused assets and animations from the prior souls games. Many enemies are re skinned from past games ( erdtree avatar is just a headless asylum demon) many bosses are repeated several times. Hell some basic enemies are bosses with beefed up stats. The open world..while pretty is mostly empty and devoid of things to do when not on the main quest path. The minor dungeons are the same 4-5 copy pasted rooms suffering the same issues the bloodbourn chalice dungeons had. The souls "side quests" do not work in an open world game. Which lets be real is mostly just talking to an npc multiple times before fighting with them/killing them. So lil context is given you likely are just off better not wasting time and look them up online. Same lack of story as all souls games. The game is well made for the most part but of course its got a laundry list of issues on the pc. Fromsoft is not above criticism whilst this game is good...its just more of the same but in an "open world" package

I enjoyed the video. However, as soon as the creator began talking about "number score " and rationalizing a "10/out of 10"- I knew the creator was an amateur critic. It is a major problem and hindrance to the video game medium those applying considered thought in the form of analysis or critique do so in the language & rationality of other mediums in ignorance. That is not the historical or practical intention of giving a Book or Film a " 10 out of 10". To have even had that notion is a gross misunderatanding that fundamentally reveals not knowing anything about critique or analysis. The premise you entered with is faulty. Goodfellas being rated a "10", for example, is not the measure of value in the art, " flawlessness" or "perfection" of the film. This has never been the case. It is to note Goodfellas is reticle exceptional within the medium using the technique and understanding of that medium. Meaning it's a film, not a play or music filmed for example, remarkable in some exceptional way with its form.

What? He's saying that a 10/10 is not a calculated measurement based on perfection. A 10/10 is the most subjective, personal score and to give anything that score should be a gut feeling. And frankly, after seeing so many jackasses on this site poorly attempt to be "objective," I think that's the only meaningful way to approach the score at all.
