Saint Riot you are my favorite Souls youtuber. You are better than every other Souls tuber for a whole myriad of reasons, but I'm just gonna underline this video as a great example. I'm not even halfway in and I have learned so many things. I didn't even know reverse quicksteps were a thing, for example. Your videos are this incredible oscillating experience between madness and insight, and it's the most Souls thing on KZbin. I'm so glad there isn't a Saint Riot Explained youtube video yet because tbh watching your content is a truly transcendent experience. You're an explorer; doesn't exactly matter if you get killed. It's the perfect kill you're after. A perfect kill that conforms to the proclivities of the character you're playing... with his dark armor and shadowy appearance. Well done!

DS2 backsteps had a lot more startup and recovery frames so spamming them like BHS was no valid option. Also the backstep I-frames weren't instant like with rolls. To use them properly, actual skill was required. BHS on the other hand is just a spammable invincibility button.

exactly what I was thinking. DS2 backstep was a short distance, balanced dodge. BHS is a long range, recovery cancelling teleport 10 meters away from your opponent

If you know saint at all, you know he's not spamming quickstep/bhs. Just trying to imitate ds2 backsteps with them in a way that suits the playstyle of this particular build, as he clarified. Of course that's not how everyone is going to use them, but it's a way to make use of those AoWs to simulate the ds2 backsteps. It fits thematically on the sneaky build and gives justification for using something that otherwise feels kinda lame to use. Being able to make things work for you and your playstyle that you otherwise wouldn't touch is part of the fun of character building.

@@valorune Relative to DS2 sure, but thats not what we are looking at here guys. The speed of DS2’s backsteps relative to the speed of the rest of the game made them pretty fast AND had I-frames. It worked the same way as Saint is using them here, big weapons feared the stab because they recovered like they’d been running a marathon and can barely stand. If you used a fast weapon then it could bully with running attacks, like BHS. It could just guarantee an escape from a greatsword and it could dodge through magic with faster recovery than a roll. BHS just has stupid long range

If you use assassins gambit and hidden body, players can't lock onto you very well at all. It becomes near impossible to see you.

The problem is that the spells are loud. In an invasion, it's likely an experienced player will hear it and be cautious, while inexperienced players won't even require a spell to be tricked anyway. Might be fun to play around with, but I'd say it's generally not worth it.

Pretty sure DS2 backstep had a useful number of vulnerability frames, and it was generally more difficult to make useful actions out of it unless you started making used of tech. Abusing backstep had a barrier to entry, whereas abusing old BHS had none, and also didn't have the slow vulnerability frames either. So I wouldn't say they're the same things, both because their mechanics were different and also their contexts were also very different. DS2 backstep added variety and contributed to the skill ceiling. ER BHS lowered the skill ceiling a lot with something very easy to abuse.

Love the build! Im doing the sneaky invasions too at the moment, but I try everything to one-shot backstab them. I like that Elden Ring allows to make that stuff work if you invest everything in it. DS3 was a lot more balanced but also a lot more stale and I choose "over-the-top but fun" over "balanced" everyday (hello DS1 days (: )

Speaking of Assassin's gambit, idk if it's been changed/patched, but I remember that if you combine the stealth (I think it's a)miracle with gambit, you become unable to be locked on to for about 30 seconds. Which for most players you may as well be invulnerable.

Love your videos dude, I haven't gotten as into Elden Ring pvp as I was into DS3, just because the game is so big and non linear I feel like I'd need to invest so much time into learning everything ,and I'm busier than I used to be. Im sure people hate this, but my favorite sneaky invasions was when Frenzied Burst would either chain lock or outright kill players using Dragon Seal. Glad I got to experience that. Wish I was making videos at the time.

Cool build. I had something similar at super low level back in the early days just to annoy and hopefully kill low level hosts using taunters tongue to gank with their high level password pals at the First Step when a regular melee build usually ended up with me just getting one-shot by RoB over and over. One thing I'd add to your build is the Enchanted Shot AoW. The speed and tracking make it much easier to hit a moving target plus because of the tracking it can be difficult to tell exactly where the shot came from. Also if your fashion sense can stand it, try the mushroom set in Caelid for ultimate stealth camo.

If I want to win I need to separate myself for a second to try eliminating one at a time. And if they're talking about invaders actually just running from the fight, just go to a boss. You are not obligated to interact with them. This community is so obnoxious at times.

I'd recommend using one of those bows or crossbows that have a special interaction with certain types of elemental damage. If you use Terra Magica and the Horn Bow with those magic arrows you can do a bunch of damage. That's what I use.

I have a similar build like this but its at level 80 and its a ninja instead of a typical assassin(even tho they are the same whatever) it uses sleep pots as smoke screen, rope volcane bots as sparks, duel wazis with bhs for ninja vanish and duel uchis in case i get in a fight against "pver coopers" and yes it uses the black hood or the altered nox helm to give me thag ninja look while jn the shadows

Because DS2 had the *TOP TIER MEME* of giving you a backstep with I-frames, then said "Oh yeah Timbo baby booooy oooohhh yeeeah get up that ADP babbbby mmmmm yeeeh sooooo goooooooood" so you could effectively be fucking immortal by pressing your dodge button at any time, because you could backstep out of roll to cancel your roll recovery frames -- which made it hilarious. Because the ONLY counter to high adp rolls were running up and getting a roll backstab on them, but, through backstep canceling, you could just BACKSTAB the dude who forgot that ADP literally gives you frame data advantage, and there's nothing you can actually do about this except suffer and switch to the warped curved sword or the ice rapier and try to cheese them out via volume of attacks made. It was stupid. Everyone with half a brain hated it, and it's why we've never seen it ever again... *UNTIL NOOOOOOOWWWWWW*

ADP wouldn't have been as bad if they started you off with an appropriate amount of s. Then leveling ADP would've just given a few extra s to make combat easier. It's not great either way because people should try to learn to play with the regular amount of s. Combat would be more consistent.
