It's kinda like dying in Fallout 3 when you're in the simulation turned into a child. Dying turns you into a weird long-fingered alien cause it stretches the child model over a full size ragdoll.

@@odinonion4619 It's for visibility. If enemies are the same height or even shorter than the player character then sometimes the player character will block the camera's view of them, making it harder to see what they're doing

Your character is a certain height, but your “eye level” where the camera is is much taller than the player. From that perspective, enemies need to be taller to match the height of the camera so it can give the effect of them being a normal height

Real talk and unrelated, but I love how the Messmer Knights actually sound like people inside heavy plated armor instead of ethereal wraiths like all of the soldier and banished knights in the base game sound like. It always irked me that all of the knights from the base game sound like they're practically ghosts when they're just suppose to be noblemen in armor.

I kinda prefer it this way. Maybe it's because my fave FromSoftware game is Sekiro (still a height difference, but not too much), but I prefer it when you can engage the mobs as "equals". It also forces you to pay attention to things like armor details rather than using "bigger = more dangerous" to gauge the difficulty of a fight.

One of the things I hate about Fromsoft games since DS3 is how every enemy has weird inhuman proportions for seemingly no reason, even when they're supposedly human themselves. Breaks immersion a lot and makes it awkward to fight them, because even trash mobs have so much reach you have to rely on dodging instead of positioning, which in turn contributes to this game being the roll fest that it is.

@@glatykoffi6672 that might be almost be true if the game had good hurtboxes, but for bosses like maliketh and hoarah Loux, point blank attacks from short ranged weapons often dont register. That and some of the most annoying enemies and bosses can be staggered like renalla or malenia as well as banished knights. It’s also unfair to call trash enemies trash enemies when they constitute rats, dogs, wolves, birds, soldiers, knights, misbegotten and skeletons, most if not all humanoids, npcs, and certain bosses. That’s like 3/4 of the enemies in the game lol (To clarify, I’m saying that to dismiss most enemies in the game is a ridiculous thing, not that they’re “trash” enemies, even though I would contend with that perception as well.)

Oh and you wouldn’t want to use a fist weapon with the damage and speed of a colossal weapon would you? Or a great sword with the range of a dagger. Because range is instrumental in a weapon’s viability and balancing in the sandbox. Not that it’s always balanced well, and sometimes the range difference within a weapon class is somewhat negligible, to say range is irrelevant is an absurd thing to suggest.

for some odd reason, if the enemies are not much larger than the player, they look smaller. I always thought that common soldiers (00:00) were smaller and these 0:08 were same size as tarnished.

I know it's purely a gameplay perspective, the whole purpose of having taller enemies was so they can be seen easier while the camera is behind the player at all times in the 3rd person. But I would also appreciate same-sized enemies regardless.

I find it to be a false reason, only souls use and abuse disproportionate huge humans, hardly any other 3rd person does it. It's just a design choice. Same size imply same limitations, only trash mobs have player limitations in souls, unlike a game like nioh where player like mobs are common and can be actual bosses.
