In this April Compass webinar our panellists discussed what elder abuse is. They outlined the five types of elder abuse experienced by older people. Drawing on the data from the recent National Elder Abuse Prevalence Study the panel discussed what we know about the abuse of older people more generally, including contributing factors, risk scenarios and the prevalence of elder abuse in our society.

Gerard Mansour
Commissioner for Senior Victorians and Ambassador for Elder Abuse Prevention
Gerard Mansour is a highly respected and passionate advocate for the needs of older people. In 2013, Mr Mansour was appointed as the first ever Commissioner for Senior Victorians to provide advice to the Victorian Government on issues relevant to senior Victorians. In 2016 Mr Mansour’s role was expanded to include acting as an Ambassador for Elder Abuse Prevention to give older victims of family violence a voice and raising community awareness of elder abuse.
Dr Rae Kaspiew
Research Director, Systems and Services @Australian Institute of Family Studies
Dr Rae Kaspiew leads the research programs at the Australian Institute of Family Studies that focus on systems and services. She is a socio-legal researcher with particular expertise in research on complex issues that cause challenges for families. She has been involved in an extensive range of studies and is the lead author of two large scale evaluations of successive waves of reforms in family law (the 2006 and 2012 reforms). She led the team that completed the National Elder Abuse Prevalence Study in 2021 and the Compliance with and Enforcement of Family Law Parenting Orders Project in 2022.
Professor Briony Dow
Director, National Ageing Research Institute (NARI)
Professor Briony Dow is the Director of the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) and Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Medicine Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne and the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Deakin University. As Director of NARI, Briony leads a range of aged care and social and clinical gerontology research programs, incorporating her own research interests in the areas of elder abuse and family carer wellbeing.
